Everyone's phones are doing that emergency alert sound in the office for a flash flood warning.
same.

and #### uber. we look west from here, so I watch the weather roll in. looks like it might clear up a little. really hoping to find a window to use citibike even if I get a little wet... I hate the train so much.

should be a quick, cheap ride.

eta:

stopped raining there- just as I'm heading out. was hoping to hop a bike. but now it's dumping again. :kicksrock:
Think I would rather ride a bike in the rain then get on the F or AC at this point.  My entire commute at this point has been focused on avoiding those lines.

I'll be in town tomorrow and Wed. Forecast is only for 20% but you guys think rain is likely at some point (since its summer after all)?  Will the city still be a little wet (roads, sidewalks) even if it doesn't rain after tonight?

I nailed the timing! Waited a minute, stopped raining... blazed downtown and started to dump again just as I pulled into the bike port.

There are mystery puddles here 24/7 365

I mean, prob less than half of what Uber would've charged.

Wife was at son's swim class about a mile from our house when it was coming down. I picked them up and played the hero, at fraction of Uber's rate - feck them!

What a day yesterday...beautiful weather for lunch at Tavern OTG...managed some calls in the park...Yankee game with Legends buffet/seats...then Havana Club late where we got to meet The Golden Boy.  Not many other cities if any can even provide an opportunity for a day like that.

I met Al Sharpton at the Havana Club (while attending a NY State Republican Committee event mind you - only in NY)

Totally. I got to see my contractors. Have coffee and lunch at my desk. Get reminded by the wife which things I didn't do and then watch TV.

EPIC

Not a better food experience in sports. The Legends buffet is amazing for a sports stadium - steak, crab legs, sushi, etc. The Delta seats at Citi Field are complete #### compared to the Legends seats at Yankee Stadium when it comes to food. The Delta seats have this tiny room with like hot dogs, burgers, & french fries... Isn't even close.

My colleague has been to most venues in the US and 100% agrees. And it obviously works because there was a waiting list for a table on a Tuesday vs the Halos. Amazing they pull that off for 81 games.

The food at Legends is awesome.

The stadium is the suck.  A big, grey concrete ode to institutionally driven box seat sales.

CitiField on the other hand has crappyish clubs, but the overall experience is so much better, especially the fact that you can watch the game from almost anywhere in the stadium, including the various concourses while getting something to eat or if you just want to get out of your seat for a bit. Plus, a kid who's family can only afford nosebleeds has a chance to hang out in the concourse at field level and watch a little.  Unfortunately, the Met's be Metsing again as a baseball team.

Agree and disagree.

If I'm taking clients to a game, Legends seats check all the boxes and provide an amazing sporting experience.

For the kids, Citi Field destroys Yankee Stadium.

Also, the 1879 Club at MSG is pretty good, but falls well short of the Legends.

I agree that for a high charged client night out type deal, the Yanks provide a good show - but again, most of that (imo) is not sports related.  I just find the stadium exceptionally dry and corporate... which supports why it's an attractive evening for those types of events.

As a baseball fan (kid or otherwise), Citi is just such a more authentic and enjoyable sports experience.  Many of my hard core yanks friends agree.

now try seeing a soccer game at yankee stadium. every seat worse than the last! I sat in a nice box for a game there once... still sucked.

I know it's the Post but...this city is so ####ed.

http://nypost.com/2017/06/20/5-steps-the-city-must-take-if-its-serious-about-fixing-the-subways/

I don't even need to take the subway anymore and this makes my blood boil. And I'm fortunate enough where if I ever do have to take the subway again, if I get stuck in a bad delay and walk into my office a half hour later than normal, no one cares. Or if I hear of a delay, I can afford an uber and even if I'm stuck in traffic, I'm sitting comfortably while I shoot off some emails to say I'll be in late and take care of other business on my phone.

I really feel for people who live outside of Manhattan and actually are forced to rely on the subway for a 30 min to an hour commute to get them to their hourly jobs, where showing up late gets their pay docked and possibly puts their job in jeopardy.

The last six months has seen a huge deterioration of service on the two lines I ride everyday (F and AC) or used to ride everyday as Citi bike has been a great stop gap for me as I can ride to the 2/3 line which is much more consistent.

Of course the entire system is entirely unreliable at this point and I think as painful as it will be some of these suggestions in this article are very good.  While painful for me closing certain lines to do critical upgrades and maintenance is something that needs to be considered as what is currently going on won't work.  I am ok with higher fares as well for improved service as I think it is pretty clear Albany won't help NYC even though NYC basically funds the entire upstate region once you get north of Westchester/Rockland.

Just a bump on this so I can start sifting through. Planning a trip to NYC in October.  Wife, Mother in Law, 8 year old daughter and me.  Probably touristy stuff like Staten Island Ferry, Natural History Museum, Childrens museum.  The girls may want to hit a play or two.

Looking for hints on best places to stay.  Which airport to use (is la Guardia under construction) and any other suggestions.

Take the ferry to Governors Island instead of Staten Island.

I think they wanted to go to the Statue of Liberty or at least by it.  Plus it looks like the Staten Is Ferry is free?
Staten Island Ferry is how I used to show my guests the Statue of Liberty. don't remember if it's free or just a nominal amount like $1. you can also see the statue from anywhere on the Hudson down near the battery (which is easy walk from world trade center or wall street area).

re: children's museum... there's one of the upper west side (nearish to natural history museum) that's better for little kids (<5) and there's the CMA (children's museum of the arts) in far west soho that's completely interactive where the kids make art. if your kids likes to make art- that's a good spot... has a range of activities from stop-action film making to anything else you can imagine.

how long are you planning to stay?

what kind of food do you guys like?

what other activities are you going to want to do? (theater, sports, museums, gardens, etc)

how adventurous are you? (want to just tick off the hits, or go a little more with deep cuts).

October should be a great time to be here, weather-wise.

eta: I'll defer to other guys about hotels... I only know the ones in my hood- a range, mostly nice/trendy, and not cheap (although my inlaws manage to find deals with some regularity).

The construction at LaGuardia sucks coming in but going back is no problem. You have 2 options coming in. You can wait on the yellow cab line to the right of the exit, which seems to be extra long now, or you can take a shuttle bus to a spot only 5 minutes away for reserved cars like uber or lyft. The problem is that they completely pack the bus and it's hard to communicate with your driver along with the rest of the people trying to do the same. It's pretty aggravating but just requires some patience. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a lot of luggage.

Can't help with Newark but depending on the day and/or time of day, JFK is a good option too.

I've flown into LGA a couple of times since the construction started. wasn't as bad as I was expecting... we just went with the yellow cabs. LGA is certainly teh closest and easiest in terms of getting to and from the city.

Our last two trips back we only had carry on so uber from the shuttle was ok but still a bit of a madhouse. With a lot of luggage and kids, I'd opt for the longer wait for a yellow cab.

Thanks Floppo (right thread?)

Probably 4-5 days around Oct 1.  Will prob do a redeye either sat or sunday night and fly back midweek.  If we fly in Sat night may try and get Yankee tix for the season finale vs Toronto. Never been to Yankee Stadium (was at Shea once).  Dont think I could talk any of them into an NFL game.

The girls are looking at plays, either on or off Broadway.  Probably hit Times Square and Central Park.  Sounded like a lot going on in the Park which could be fun.  My daughter wants to ride the subway (I think shes seen too much of "Girl Meets World").

I would be a little more adventurous (I've been there a few times and my MiL is from there although hasnt been back in a long time) but I think my wife and Daughter are looking for the hits.  First time in NYC for them.

Food? no one can help us since all 4 of us eat so differently. HAHA.

Granted, what the hell does a Texan know about New York but...

A couple thoughts on food, especially if you all sorta prefer different items.

Plenty of casual fast eats where you don't need to sit down (or can do so very quickly)... pizza, delis (maybe there's something for everyone at Katz's? Big hit, tourist spot, but also damn good for an ol' time new yorker), street carts all that. Some awesome quick asian eats too (love me some Xian, which now has like three locations in manhattan)

Something like Eataly or another of the growing segment of higher end food courts basically might work... your girls would probably like Chelsea Market also where there are a number of options.

Also, if you don't have plans Sunday, you might want to go to Smorgasburg in Brooklyn... perhaps do a half day in brooklyn, starting with lunch where they have dozens and dozens of vendors and some REALLY good options. DEFINITELY something for everyone there.

I do wish Carnegie Deli was still there.  That place was great.  Have to see about Katz.

for me, the key is tie in different activities that are close to each other.

central park usually means one or more of the museums for me... big fan of MoMA and the Met. the latter is right on the park (82nd ish) as is Nat History.

they'll probably enjoy soho for the shopping (and the crowds). CMA (I mentioned above) is nearby, as is little italy, chinatown or the village (east, central or west... each with their own attractions).

world trade center should be seen.. with memorial and/or museum (I still haven't been in there yet). that's downtown near wall street and the staten island ferry. the occulus is worth checking out (new transit hub with crazy interlocking finger roof) next to TWC... it's a mall that also links to the hudson river through brookfield place. go through there and then walk down to the ferry (or just look at the statue of libery in the middling distance from the river-side).

you'll want to see the highline along with chelsea market.

MoMATH is an interesting interactive math museum for kids that yours might like (if she likes math) right on Madison park which is also where Eataly, the flatiron building and Lego store is located.

they might want to go to the top of a tall building- TWC is open (I haven't and won't go). I've preferred top of the rock, but for the NYC experience, tough to beat the empire state. you'll want to get reservations waaaay in advance for a lot of this.

theater tickets have been a ##### for us (my mom's in town and trying to take my oldest to see something). Wicked is apparently an easier ticket and might be fun for the ladies. I'm always partial to Blue Man Group for a fun experience and somewhat cheaper/easier ticket... but not a "broadway show" experience. willy wonka and school of rock look fun (for kids and parents).

Thanks.

I live across the street from Katz's. a ton of stuff in the hood to do/see/eat, including the tenement museum, which puts you right into the life of turn of the century immigrants.

We did October long weekend in NYC last year with kid of similar age.  Highlight for us was walking Brooklyn Bridge at sunset.  You'll get plenty of great advice in here.  We looked into airBNB, but ultimately went hotel. I was shooting for Flatiron, but Hotwire put me in Koreatown.  Not perfect, but pretty good for our needs.

Stone street is always a good place to grab food downtown.  Not sure if all the outdoor seating is still up in October.

Good stuff here.  Chicks dig Wicked.  It's my wife's favorite, and it's entertaining enough to watch as a guy, while the girls will likely love it.

Tenement museum is awesome. Check it out in advance as they have different types of exhibit... some are more traditional in that you go into rooms that are done up with period items as if it were still the home of an Italian immigrant from 1920's or Jewish from 1890's or whatever.  You are standing in their life, it's pretty cool.  They also do food / tasting exhibits of different cultures, various lengths of walking tours and, as noted really close to a lot of things (including El Katzo)

To the last part, You're a JERK... But it's ok.  Unless you remember that there are two speeds in New York.  Move fast... or get outta da way.

Today is the last of 3 long days working an event at the Marriott Marquis. Damn, this area is horrible no matter what day or time you have to walk through.

Just had a bacon/egg/cheese from Daily Provisions (Danny Meyer's coffee shopish place on 19th/Park) - fantastic, highly recommend. Only $6.50, which at this point is close to what I'm accustomed to paying at a typical bagel spot. In 2000, I used to stop on my way to school for an awesome BEC, $2.50 :kicksrock:
