This is one of the reasons why NYC disappoints me. We will at some point head back, but we aren't staying later than 5th grade. We're in a top public school now, but once you hit 6th grade, it turns into a crap shoot. We're going to just live in a high quality school system. We're going to try and keep our apartment though, tbd, but that is the plan for now.
Crazy how it took a virus to completely change our line of thinking. With my company issuing WFH guidance for NYC until 2021, I don't see why we return until then (if I'm still employed). Fall will be unpleasant when this #### creeps back around again, imo.
As I write this out, just makes me realize how upside down life is right now.

I’m sitting outside (
) with five friends and a toddler rn, everyone with masks, gloves and/or goggles/face shield, 10’ apart.Once a week on Saturday I go to the Father’s Heart food pantry in the EV. That’s been the only place I have gone in the last 7 weeks and I was in self quarantine April 11 & 18. Don’t anticipate changing anything until Cuomo lifts PAUSE (expires May 15 but might be longer for NY, LI, Westchester & Rockland.)
Everything else that fills up my day is via Zoom conferences. Grocery store 1-1/2 blocks away, laundry in unit. Went for an hour walk today to McCarren & McGorlick Parks - I always walk every day - and workout inside the apartment. I am mentally prepared to do this as long as it takes.

Middle school wasn't a crap shoot...you apply to places based on your grades, state test scores, attendance etc. The rubrics for the various schools were really clear, and in our district the options were all good to great. You had to work hard to find a bad for for your kid.
But removing all of that criteria NOW makes it a crap shoot for this year if it turns to a pure lottery.

You've definitely been more cautious than I have but it comes with the territory. Outside of our walks around the park or trips to the supermarket, we hardly see anyone. I haven't worn gloves or any type of face shield or disinfected things coming into the house but have been diligent with hand washing and avoiding touching my face. I just think if I show positive for antibodies, I'm going to cut back on mask usage unless in stores or near people in close proximity for any length of time.None whatsoever. Could have been a false positive.

The uptick in goggles / face mask usage seems recent, but then again I didn’t leave the ‘hood much for 20 days (4/4-24.) I returned to TFHM on 4/25 but didn’t have test results until yesterday afternoon.
I feel like overall I am probably less isolated than most. I check in on neighbors, went out to Shelter Island the last 3 weekends - holding steady at six Covid 19 cases - and have 4-6 Zoom meetings everyday. With the slowed down pace I’ve reconnected with a lot of people here and back home in Michigan whom I have been neglecting due to the usual pace of life.
TBH I am in no rush to hop back into the hamster wheel.

Headed back to the Jersey shore after 6 days in Brooklyn. Was great to be home for a bit and do stuff around the house. Wife and I have discussed splitting our time between the two places for a bit. Real benefit here is decent sized yard for the kids to play in vs. the small patio we have in Brooklyn. Lucky to have any outdoor space in the city but yesterday was so nice out it would have been nice to have more room for kids to run around.
Also, I don't get the blowback at deBlasio re: funeral in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, that community has ignored requests to avoid social distancing throughout the region from day one. Not just a Williamsburg thing as they have had arrests in Lakewood NJ. You would think how hard they have been hit they would follow the guidelines.

I haven't read his tweets, so grain 9f salt...but haters gonna hate.
That's a community that routinely gives zero ####s for their fellow citizens and they need to be called out for idiotic behavior when the situation calls for it. Showing up en masse to a funeral of a guy who died of the coronavirus is a big FU to the city at large.

And it's been nice being outside down here. Just being able to go into our small back yard (it's a really nice spot on the water, but small and no water access- canal/bay separated by piling retaining wall) has been great. As has walking out the door into a quiet cul se sac and knowing were not going to he run down by people walking on the sidewalk, as is usual at our spot in the city (Union Market grocery surrounds our building entry on street level...so people are exiting or using our doorway to wait for their other person shopping.

Nobody should be holding gatherings of 2500 rn (or “hundreds” for anyone in a pedantic mood.) This is one of the hardest aspects of PAUSE; not being able to hold rituals which in normal times help us process grief.
I feel terrible for anyone who has experienced that. I have lost 3 friends / extended acquaintances whom I would have gone to pay my respects.

I don’t own a drone, I was curious how that works. My Brooklyn neighbor used to fly all the time around Williamsburg / Bushwick but then he got a letter from the FFA (they tracked him down from his YouTube channel.) “I’m not supposed to talk about it we’re still litigating.”

Despite the gorgeous weather (& most of our seniors no longer turning up), we served over 350 at The Father’s Heart. For the eighth straight week we signed up a record number of first timers for the food pantry.
More importantly - most importantly - we were able to spend time with many who needed reassurance, prayer, and encouragement. The angst that all of us feel rn is is felt exponentially by the most vulnerable members of our society. The meals, groceries, dental/legal/tax prep services are what draws people. Authentic friendships and caring keeps them coming back.
The more we can invest in our friends living on the street, the more likely they are to to remain hopeful and to keep striving toward betterment of their lives.
