While this isn't overly signifiacnt I thought I'd share a nugget I heard here in Columbus. Sports talk radio 1460 The Fan's Chris Speilman is reporting his brother, Rick Spielman, former GM of the Miami Dolphins and ESPN analyst, will be named shortly to a management position with the Vikings.

Not much fantasy value but those of you that keep track, here you go.

My condolences to Vikings fans.

The combo of Wannstadt & Spielman was truly horrible. AJ feeley for a 2nd rounder.

Nothing more needs to be said than that.

Vikings | Spielman hired

Tue, 30 May 2006 12:16:49 -0700

Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports the Minnesota Vikings have hired Rick Spielman to replace Fran Foley as their vice president of player personnel. "We are extremely excited to hire Rick," owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement. "We are impressed with Rick's expertise, passion, character and work ethic." Spielman was to be introduced at a 4 p.m. press conference in the team's Winter Park Fieldhouse. Spielman, who joined ESPN Insider as an NFL analyst after a five-year stint with the Miami Dolphins, has been part of three divisional championships and six playoff teams.

Advantage: The Bears and all their fans for the life of Spielman's contract.

This is pretty funny. I remember telling Dolphins fans the same exact thing when Wanny was hired and they scoffed at my comments - and said McCaskey was the problem in Chicago, not Wanny.A little revisionist history by ANY Phins fan saying this is a bad hire by the Vikes.

Dolphin fan here. Spielman is a very good college scout - its the trades that have done him in. He overpays at every possible opportunity, and rarely gets equal value in return. For example:

** Feeley for a #2 :bag:

** Ricky Williams for 2 #1's

** Lamar Gordon for a #3

** Ogunelye (coming of a 16 sack season) for only Booker and a 3rd round pick

** Trading a fourth round pick to move up one spot in the draft to select Vernon Carey (when Vince Wilfolk was still on the board and rated highly by the Phins staff)

etc...

To his credit, he has managed to consistently find excellent talent outside of the first round - Chambers, McMichael Will Poole, Rex Hadnot, etc. In fact, in 2002 Spielman had Anquan Boldin on the telephone during the Dolphins pick, only for Wannstadt to overrule him and pick Eddie Moore in the 2nd.

So while this is a popular move to bash, it may turn out to be an ok hiring by the Vikings if someone keeps Spielman in line with regards to trade value. Remember, excluding their 2004 seaon when they finished 4-12 (the year Ricky reitred), the Dolphins had always been a very talented squad and were playoff contenders every year. The problem in Miami between 2001-2003 was not a lack of talent, but a lack of coaching that led to annual December flameouts.

When Spielman was in the Bears' front office, their three first-round draft choices were John Allred, Curtis Enis, & Cade McNown. To supplement your "he's bad at trading" theme, they also traded a first-rounder for Rick Mirer.

Also, his first-round picks in Miami before Saban came to town were Todd Wade ('00), Jamar Fletcher ('01), Seth McKinney ('02), Eddie Moore ('03), and Vernon Carey ('04).

Edit: Moore was a second-rounder and McKinney was a third-rounder. They were the Dolphins' first picks in those years, but not first-rounders. Same with Allred in 1997; he was the Bears first pick that year, but it was in the second round.

I really don't think he has that much authority. He has Childress taking care of the coaching staff/strategy of who the team needs. Studwell is still in charge of cpllege scouting/draft. Berzinski still handles the cap/contracts.

As a longtime Dolphins fan.....I can't even BEGIN to tell you how bad a move this was by the Vikings. For as much as he may deny it now or try to pass the blame.....Spielman was single handidly responsible for Miami trading a second round pick to Philly in exchange for A.J. Feeley. That alone should get him banned from any NFL related front office job ever again.

Let's not mention Jamal Fletcher, Lamar Gordan, and my personal favorite....trading up one spot to take Vernon Carey (The tackle who still hasn't broken the starting lineup and is now being moved to guard by Nick Saban) when the trading partner had no intention of taking Carey in the first place.

Enjoy!
