Nexus 5 - Anyone? (1 Viewer)

Google now is awesome though. Why have this phone and then shut that off?
Is that the customizable home screen that has updated weather and email notifications etc?
have you ever used an android device, or are you coming from an iphone/blackberry?

Google now.... well, It'd take too long to explain, so read up on it.

You have have weather, notifications etc without google now. home screens (yes you can have multiple) are all customizable with widgets etc

Link to my N5 homescreen

I like it clean... with weather, the time, and my most used apps.

at the top is the google search bar (like Siri for iphone, but miles better, imo)

eta: yes, it's -27 degrees here

You know how to make folders, right?
Me? Yup. But i like it laid out like this. Lightning fast access to the apps i hammer steadily.
Folders open real quick imo.

I always leave at least 1 row open on each screen so I don't accidentially press something open when swiping left and right.

Try folders for a week. I have the following ones on my phone: google stuff, games, sports, productivity.

It really does not slow me down using the apps and looks much cleaner.

Ordered mine Christmas Day. Shipped Boxing Day, arrived the day after that. That was with the cheapest shipping option.

Been playing with the phone for about a week now. Black, no case.

Love it. Fast, good screen, fast, KitKat is great, fast. Did I mention it's fast?

Only two complaints about KitKat on the Nexus 5 (which don't exist on the version of KitKat on my 2013 N7):

1. You can't put any shortcut screens to the left of the home screen. Left of the home screen is always Google Now. I love Google Now, but wanted to get my N5 configured in the same way as I have my N7, and that meant I wanted shortcuts to the left of the home screen. No luck.

2. You can't get rid of the Google search bar at the top of each home screen. Not a big deal on my N7 because it has plenty of real estate to spare, but on a N5 you really need that space.

I realize that both of these elements can be fixed by using a custom launcher, but I generally prefer to keep my phone as close to stock as possible. At some point I might get annoyed enough to make the change, but so far I'm OK trying to get used to the differences.

 overall.

Nova Launcher is pretty much as close to stick as you can get... and it gives you the options you want.

Just arrived. Is pretty slick. For the brief moment I had the nexus 4 I figured a way to get my iPhone SMS messages on to it so I would have my contacts and conversations. I remember it being kind of a pain in the ###. So before I go looking for the way I did it, did anyone have/know of an easy way? And is anything gonna be different now that hangouts is the default message app?

ok, 2 days with the phone - I owned an S3, girlfriend has the s4 and a iphone 5 for work. pretty familiar with all of them

this phone, without question, ####s on all of them.. and it isn't even close. this thing is blazingly fast and being an android is awesomely customizable.. new kitkat OS is awesome, awesome, awesome.

a lot of folks are complaining about battery life, and ya... Im sure if you have Google Now, bluetooth, widgets galore, screen brightness etc up full blast it'll suck.

with 3hrs of on screen time, and a total uptime of 12.5hrs yesterday, I have 49% battery left (and my phone did a full software upgrade, and every app was installed etc).. so pretty heavy use.

camera is very nice, no issues as some are reporting

never been this impressed, this quickly, with a phone. and the price 0f 349.99 from the google play store... is absolutely insane for a phone of this quality... easily a 600$ phone

If you're on the hunt, grab one

and the screen is PHENOMENAL.
I'm a huge fan. I have an HTC One and I haven't used it since I got the Nexus 5
You should sell your HTC one....... any chance it is sprint....
T-Mobile

I didn't like Hangouts for texting, so I installed Textra and made it the default SMS app. Pretty customizable, and lets you use custom text sounds and status bar notifications for different contacts (pretty important to me, and stock Android doesn't have that capability).

Not sure how you move over old text conversations, though. Sorry.

Man, I have a lot to learn. This is my first go round on an android. Ordered it last night, and it's supposed to ship on the 9th. Really excited to get it activated.

That doesn't help my iPhone to android text issue though. Any suggestions for that

go to the xda nexus 5 forum, and ask your question in the Q&A forum... if an answer exists you'll get it there very quickly w great directions.

that forum is insanely good

I so want this device, but I'm still stuck with my GS3 on Verizon. I might buy one and give the GS3 to a family member. I hate Sammy software, and put pure Android on it, but ROM's get buggy. I buy this, root it, and that's it.

It's an iMessage thing. You need to kill that dead somehow.

There's plenty of info flaoting around about it (Including in Otis'ses Note 3 thread).

I'd check out Android Central forums or Reddit before XDA... or at the very least make sure you are not in the developer forums on XDA.

got it figured out. needed to make a backup of my iphone then transfer with an app. If anyone needs to do this I can point you in the right direction.

 much better than hangouts, really dig the reply directly from the notification pulldown. That score app you recommended in the 5 apps thread rules too. You know what's what when it comes to apps and Canadian entertainment.

Does this work with Google Voice? Can I send with my Google Voice number? If not, I can't use this.

Not sure about GV and 8sms, I am only using my carrier # with it. Checked the settings and don't see anything giving the option to set the # to your GV#.

So do you just use the standard GV app (looks like it was designed in 2008) or is there a better one out there?

I was using a paid app, Messaging + Google Voice, but it got broken with various updates and the developer really sucked at fixing it in a timely manner.

So, I just use the old Google Voice app for now, the blue icon one. And if I ever send a message with my other number, I use Hangouts.

Google Voice is supposedly going to be fully integrated into Hangouts in the next few months, which I am looking forward to.

I know this was explained in another thread, but cannot remember if it pertained to my particular situation. I want to port my # to google voice. I know it costs 20 bucks. I am on a pay as you go plan with t-mobile. Anyone know that if I port my # to google voice, will I have to get another sim from t-mobile? Or can t-mobile just assign me another #? And if any of that is true, in what order should I do all these things?

This phone is lightning fast. Jesus. I almost dont want to use my tablet or macbook to do stuff cause this thing blows them away in terms of speed.

That is what I do too... I rarely send texts though, as most people I communicate with often are now Hangouts users as well.

I am way more excited about that than I should be... however, I am concerned about my VOIP option as Google has brought the ban hammer down on 3rd party android apps currently supporting it.

P.S. the iOS Hangouts app curretly supports free VOIP calling, so all hope is not lost.

BTW, I opted not to go the Google Voice route. Seems like Google Voice had the advantage for voicemail, but the disadvantage on the texting app and I text a lot more than I use voicemail.

I've been using Handcent as my texting app and I've been really happy with the look and feel of it. Very, very customizable. I didn't bother trying 8SMS - I had a hardtime seeing what the actual conversations would look like in their Google Play store. Based on reviews, it seemed like 8SMS is light, and basic, but Handcent is more customizable, but both seemed well reviewed and supported.

I got my case and screen protector today. Based on Amazon reviews, I went with the Diztronic cover. I like the phone a lot more with the case... just has the right kind of weight now and slides in and out of pocket much easier. For the screen protector, went with iSmooth something from Amazon.

I think you have the right order. You'll have to call T-Mo and ask if you need a new SIM or just a different number. Do the port towards the end of your prepaid period because whenever you port out it will cancel your current period. But not too late because you'll lose the # if the prepaid account closes down before the port. Maybe with 3 days left is safest.

I'd just grab another SIM when they are on sale for free of 99 cents and go that route.

I initially ported my number to GV before I activated the sim with T-Mobile.

My phone is still stuck in Louisville, KY due to adverse weather conditions. :kicksrock:
that's the starting point LOL

and what adverse weather? 3 degrees is adverse?

mother####ing mailmen were delivering on foot here in -38 just two days ago

I'm gonna active my phone tonight. :excited:

Dumb question: If I plug my phone into a USB 3.0, will it charge faster? Or is it faster only for data transfer?

Plug your phone into the wall and charge to 100% before you do anything. Trust me. (note: the nexus does not have a "charging LED" so just plug it in and let it go to 100%... you'll know where it's at by clicking the power button quickly.. dont hold it)

and always use the wall charger. nothing charges faster.

then come back and let's talk Nexus

OK, let's go.
report back in a while when your OS has updated etc.

imo, get 8sms immediately and make it your default mms app.. hangouts stinks.. but that's me

Does the Nexus 5 use mini, micro, or nano SIM?

I'm enjoying it so far. DL'd a few useful apps and widgets. I need to make folders to organize my apps though.

What are some tips and tricks to optimize this beast?

This case treating you well? I ordered the Spigen case but did not like that at all. I have always been a no case guy for my iphone, but the camera sticking out thing on the Nexus is making we want to buy something.
