Nexus 5 - Anyone? (1 Viewer)

Kit Kat 4.4.3 is being pushed as of today for Nexus owners.

Goes out in batches so may not get yours for a couple days - but it's in the tubes.
 - Very happy with the purchase of this phone. I can't imagine how this phone can be better.
it's about to....

this update is supposed to include camera fixes/enhancements, battery enhancements, signal enhancements, etc.
Do i have to do anything or will it automatically be pushed to my phone?
Youll get a notification unless u have it turned off.

Go to settings. About phone. Update. And see what it says. Usually checks on its own hourly or so
thx.
Ok...so i completely forgot about this until today. I just checked my system and i still have the 4.4.2. I have tried to manually update, meaning that i click on the version and hit update, to no avail. Does it matter that i use Ting and not a national carrier (although ting buys service from sprint)? Is there any other way to download the update?

So Hangouts app basically doesn't work for me anymore on my Nexus 5. I get error messages all the time saying it can't download the message. I've run across other people having same issue, but no one has a fix, and Google won't even offer tech support for its own app.

So, I think my only option is to go with a different default app for texting. What are the best ones out there? Anyone with an opinion?

Check out 8SMS.

P.S. what happened after you cleared data for the Hangouts and restarted your phone?

I tried handcent and textra. I like textra better. Insert Soulfly *Trust me * here

I had looked at Android texting options review on lifehacker which lead me to Textra. I wanted something that was:

- good for group texts

- had pop-up from the lockscreen when you got a good text

- didn't lock you into a closed network, like imessage, even if this meant paying for texts. It's possible some of these services allow you to opt out, but after the cluster of imessage, I don't even want to chance it.

I first tried Handcent which was good on the last 2 items above. It's very, very customizable, but even after all the customizations, it still looks a little dated. It was a little bit better on being able to reply to texts without unlocking the phone, but anytime I got a group text, it was totally confusing on who was replying to what. My wife still uses handcent.

Textra solves the group text problem and is just good all around at texting. I get a quick pop-up on the lock screen if I get a text and it's not very intrusive. I always know when I have a text waiting either through the LED light or notifications bar. It's fast, light, looks good and has just the right amount of customizations for my needs.

I noted that someone recommended 8sms, but everytime I went to look for screenshots or what not about the app, the information was light. I don't have experience with it.

Great thing about Android is that trying out a new texting app is very easy. I was surprised just how easy it was to switch from Hangouts to Handcent and then Handcent to Textra. Smooth.

Not sure if I asked this already, but I find that texting pictures (and group texts for that matter) requires using data and MMS. I'm on T-mobile so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. It'd be great to just use my wifi.

I've switched to Textra.

It is the group texts that seems to be an issue. I'm on Solavei, which I believe is on T-Mobile's network. And I've seen that there are some issues there.

Either way, I couldn't find any fix. Clearing the data and restarting phone didn't do anything. So I'm done with Hangouts.

Evidently it's a T-Mobile issue, not a Hangouts issue. Having the same problem on Textra. Have found some user fixes online from other people having the issues, but so far they're not working for me. This pretty much sucks. I can't receive any group texts.

Count me in on the tmobile mms issues, specifically pics not coming through and saying can't download, saved until xx date xx time. I feel like I'm missing out on some good nudie pics here.

And my experience is it actually isn't even a picture. It uses MMS to process group texts, and even simple text won't go through.

I have a Nexus 4 w/ TMobile service (via Solavei) and I'm having zero issues with hangouts... that said, I barely use hangouts, so maybe I am and just don't know it?

there has to be an issue with your APN settings.

Have you thought about a factory data reset?

I changed the one APN setting to IPv6 instead of IPv4 as someone suggested. We'll see if that works.

Wtf are you all using group texts for? I thought that was just a chick thing (no offense if you are in fact ladies, in which case pm me and I'll give you my # so I can get in on the group action)

I know Ive said this before, but Android 4.4.3 is soon in the pipelines.

Google uploaded the changelog onto the AOSP server and it was copied and is being shared around quite a bit... It's also why you're seeing an influx of google updates in the playstore.

Be ready.

Im in ONE group chat w 4 buddies from back in highschool.

we've remained best friends but all moved away. Great way to #### talk daily. Then when we have a chance to meet up once a month or so, we always have a blast and have things to discuss

???

You want to meet up with friends for drinks or something. Do you send them each a text individually?

It's not just sending, receiving a text that was sent out to multiple recipients isn't simple either. I get a note that I received an MMS, then I have to turn on my data, and go back to the texting app, tap the MMS note and hope to get the text. Usually it's from iphone users who group text with ease.

Did you used to have an iphone before switching?

Same here. It's a nice way to keep in touch. No chicks allowed, either.

I've had mine for about a month now. Love it. But have a question..... My old phone the Motorola Photon had an icon for Voicemail. Is there a way to add an icon? Is there anything other than stock voicemail?

TIA

Best phone ever. Seriously, this thing is good. I'm really hoping it lasts for at least 3-4 years. I have the neon red version, which just adds to how awesome it is. Also, Spigen makes great cases for this phone. I have the "crystal" clear Ultra Hybrid, which offers good protection while not being too thick and stil shows off the neon red all around.

I've gotten used to the Hangouts app for texting, and actually like it a lot now. The split screen function is a nice touch. Only thing I've had problems with is this $30/month T-Mobile plan. I barely get an "H" data connection, mostly "E" at work. I'll be switching to $45/month Straight Talk in a few weeks.

As far as the voicemail icon, I always just pulled the top menu down and tapped the Voicemail logo.

I'm still rocking the N4, ended up downloading a tmobile visual voicemail app that works great. Your provider may have one you can download.
I'm still on the N4 too. Disapointed in all of these rumors about the Nexus line being killed.

I thought they were just "re-branding" the Nexus line? Yet, when I read a few articles it sounded more like they actually will discontinue Nexus and just offer Google Play versions of other carriers' phones. Ugh, that'd suck. Hopefully they realize what a huge mistake that'd be.

Maybe it's not a mistake for them financially though. They can't be making much on these Nexus devices.

See this is what I'm talking about. I get no icon, just a missed call icon.

All I'm really looking for is notification that I have voicemail. I found I had 10 messages and never knew it. I just don't get notified that I have a message. My voicemail box is set up too.

I have to be missing a setting, but I have looked all over the damn phone and cannot find a setting to show an icon.

Say what Hulk? I've been slacking on my tech news lately, this can't be true.
Nexus line supposedly dead. GPE devices presumed dead as well. Android Silver supposedly launching next February... featuring "google inspired/design" phones from multiple manufactures, and heavily promoted and available in brick and mortar stores. Chances of those being priced like the current Nexus line is are about nil though. They'll probably all be $600.

Very valid sources say, "no Nexus 6" is certain. I'm still holding out hope for a Nexus 5 2014 (like they did with the 2nd Nexus 7), but we'll see.

I will most likely buy a Nexus 5 when they decide to kill it and cut the price way down (like they did on the Nexus 4). Or maybe I'll convince myself my hands can handle the One+ One's 5.5 inches. We'll see.

From what I've been reading this morning, it seems this is an issue which Google has not addressed yet, and doesn't seem to be enthused about addressing since it's been happening to everyone since 2013.

Hmmm with news the Nexus line might be ending I think I'll be holding onto the N5 instead of selling it liked I planned to in August. I'm still itching to use my contract upgrade to switch to an GS5, but keeping the N5 around as a spare smart phone is better than buying stupid insurance on smart phones.

After that I don't think I'll be buying a new phone for a long time (unless I lose it - which I never have) as the GS5 is water proof and with a replaceable battery I can always buy a new phone when battery life starts to crap out.

Say what Hulk? I've been slacking on my tech news lately, this can't be true.

I am expecting Motorola to have the budget market cornered by then... the Moto X line may essentially be a Nexus replacement.

I've never had this issue, thankfully.

Nor heard of it. A shame
You don't have this issue?

I've read A LOT of complaints today, from users using all carriers
I don't get a lot of calls so my voicemail/missed call list is very manageable. However, even my previous 100 year old Samsung flip phone had a visual voice-mail feature (T-mobile). Maybe it's a carrier function, cuz if it's a phone/app feature, it should have been addressed already, no?

We'll see what they release it at. The original was like $650 off contract originally. After a few months it dropped down to what it is now ($349 I think?). I'm intrigued by the phone, but I'd prefer a Nexus 5 to the current one by a fair margin.

I have this exact same problem, I do not get any notifications when I get a voicemail. I have a few friends with Nexus 5s on T-mobile that do not have this issue - not sure if it is a Sprint thing? I barely get any calls, but I could see how that would be annoying if you talk a lot.

Tried Google Voice and when I dial the activation code, I get the same message, "The code you dialed is invalid" Just like the other two 3rd party voicemail services I tried.

Android Silver is supposed to be the new Google flagship that will be on the same price point and par with the iPhone.
