NFL declares the Steelers champs of merchandise sales (1 Viewer)

The playoffs have not yet begun and the Steelers enter as the No. 2 seed in the AFC but the NFL already has declared them champions ... of merchandise sales.

More Steelers merchandise was sold during the 2010 season than any other NFL team, according to NFLShop.com, which counted sales from April 1, 2010 through Jan. 2.

And the top-selling jersey? Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, a candidate for NFL defensive player of the year, beat them all and was the only non-quarterback among the top eight jersey sales last season.

The Dallas Cowboys had the second-best selling merchandise and reigning Super Bowl champion New Orleans was third.

Following Polamalu in jersey sales were Saints QB Drew Brees, the 2009 league MVP, and popular rookie quarterback Tim Tebow of Denver.

Keep in mind this is only sales thru one internet retailer.

The Steelers could still be #1...but the Cowboys have a larger presence at other retailers in general across the country...so hard to say who the true #1 is.

Definitely between those two.

The amazing thing is that every man, woman and child in Western Pennsylvania already had Steelers apparel before the season started. I don't have any jerseys but I probably have 10 Steelers T-shirts, a couple Steelers polos, sweatshirts and hoodies, pj pants and probably 6 or 7 hats.

Some interesting numbers:39% of NFL apparel customers shop in stores once a month or more. The average NFL apparel buyer spends $130/year (men over $140/year).44% of NFL apparel customers wear NFL apparel 1-2 times a week.

I have all kinds of stuff too, hats, shirts, sweats, gloves, The Terrible Towel, and this year my buddy found an international site that sales the real deal jerseys for cheap, I got Woodley and A. Smith.

I'd be really surprised if this weren't the case, every year.
It's not the case. The Cowboys are usually #1. Some years they are close to 20% of retailers buys...similiar to the Yankees.

Now the NFL will tell the refs to make sure that they win the title...
I see that Mike Holmgren posts here. And I notice Mike's tenure with the Browns has involved dealing with a food addiction given his recent press conference discussing the search for a new coach. In Charleston SC, every other bar or restaurant advertises itself as Steeler Headquarters on Sundays. Every 4th or 5th car in town has a Steeler bumper sticker or decal on it. The Polamalu, and even Bettis, shirts are a common sight. One rarely sees Panthers or Falcons or Cowboys stuff around here any more. This city is a 12 hour drive to Pittsburgh, and there are far more Ohio transplants in town than from Western PA. But finding any Browns or Bengals gear is next to impossible.

They no doubt lead the league in sales of XL pink jerseys.I kid, I kid. :hophead:
It's cool. The Pats and their fans can back up their talk. They are the gold standard. New England is to this decade what the Steelers were to the 70s. Brady and company demolished some good teams this year with methodical ease.Lots of Patriots fans out here on Kiawah and Seabrook Islands with vacation homes. Plenty of NH and Maine license plates.

Wasn't that the Steelers 5th Super Bowl win in which Tom Brady flipped the coin?
Ha. Well played. Sill neck and neck with Packers for largest female fans though. I look forward to the Pats ending the Steelers season in the AFCCG again. Shame it won't be in Pitt this time. Seriously though, good luck next weekend. Hopefully it will be Indy-Pitt (and Pete Morelli is nowhere to be found).

The Cowboys and Steelers have been the two most popular franchises for years, I think they've been 1 and 2 in merchandise sales forever.

The Cowboys own Texas, the Rocky Mountain region, the old West, and they even have conducted training camp in Los Angeles. The Steelers have the midwest and south.

In public, NFL owners will say they'd rather make the playoffs. In private, I think they'd choose this.

Pittsburgh did both, of course. But I think owners would trade a playoff berth for the $$ generated from consistent merchandise sales.

Here in Hampton Roads, VA, the Steelers fans make up the vast majority of patrons at the biggest Sunday Ticket restaurant venues. Also, the Steelers were almost always the local game that was broadcasted on the CBS affiliate every week. You tend to see far more Steelers bumper stickers on cars and more people wearing Steelers gear while out shopping than any other team. I would say that Hampton Roads, VA is Steelers Country...maybe even more than the Redskins.
