NFL team eventually in London? (1 Viewer)

The idea does seem ridiculous. How could the team be competitive? It would have to take extended road trips, like baseball. And seems like players would demand extra incentives to go to that team. Pretty sure it would be tough on families. It's already tough enough on them with current player movement, but now between countries overseas. C'mon, man!

its london, its a great place to live. its not like they are making players spend time in cleveland or buffalo.

The NFL can't even sell out Sunday's game...
Those are teams that represent Tampa and Chicago, not London. A London team is inevitable. There's too much money in Europe to not give it a shot. And flight times from London to many of the NFL cities are going to be seven hours. You have them play chunks of games at home so they don't have to travel so much. Or just say you're millionaires, deal with it. There are people who travel back and forth to London for the work week from the States on a semi-regular basis. But it's important to try to get football going at the youth level over there. And there are plenty of people in Buffalo and Jax who like their teams. The economy sucks at the moment and not many people have that kind of disposable income. I seem to recall LA having two teams not too long ago and losing them because of lack of interest. Neither of those teams should leave their towns.

True, but these guys play 16 games, not 162 or 82...You could go to a schedule where you always have a string of 2+ games home or away, but I do agree with the extra incentives. I find it funny that in basketball Toronto still fields a team. Just seems like many of the U.S. players do not want to be out fo the country. They have recently been bringing in more international players who are thousands of miles from home anyways, but as I ageed, you would now have to cater to 52+ guys and staff versus 12 in basketball.

The football wives of England? Let's imagine Cedric Benson or Pacman in London for an extended period. Now the NFL will be creating international incidents. Still, probably not as bad as drunk soccer fans.

As a Uk based NFL fan I think this Is a mistake. The reason the games over here have sold out is because it's a once a year event. Not that many of the people at the games are Londoners. I've gone the last three years and it involves flights, hotels etc. A lot of those that go come over from Germany, Holland and Spain for the weekend.

That's fine one week a year but is unsustainable for 8 weeks. All you'll end up with is a poorly supported team overseas replacing a poorly supported US team. Add in the fact that most NFL fans in the Uk already support a team who they wouldn't just give up on and this seems like a bad idea.

It would also have to compete with the EPL on Sundays and the majority of Brits are more likely to watch that.

Perhaps taking baby steps is the best approach. Have London host 3-4 NFL games every season. If they can support that, the chances of them supporting 8 home games for a team of their own goes up.

I'd like to see them use different venues around the UK, there's a lot of talk here that the Glazers links to Manchester United could mean games being played at Old Trafford in future. Murrayfield would also be a great option.

As a Londoner I pretty much agree with this. I've been to a couple of the games but to be honest if your team isn't playing the game is probably more fun to watch on TV. There could also be problems with using Wembley so regularly as it's already used fairly often for a variety of events, I believe there has to be a minimum time period between events there to make sure the pitch is suitable for football games. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up having to play their home games in differnet stadia around the UK. If we ever did get a team though I'm not sure what interesdt I'd have in the London Bills/Rams/Jaguars, I'd almost have more interest in an expansion team starting from scratch but they would be terrible for some time.

The good and the bad of Roger Goodell, and this whole London nonsense is the absolute worst of the bad he brings.

It could work if the NFL was popular enough to create an entire 4-team division. Eight home games, three road games in Europe, 5 road games in the states. That could be done easily in two road trips across the pond.

If they were this hell-bent on establishing a team in Europe I think they made a poor decision in shutting down the summer league imo. I have felt for a long time they should play ALL preseason games outside the U.S.(Asia, Canada, Europe, Mexico) - the fans here don't want to get stuck paying full ticket price for those games anyway. It would be an easy way to test the potential popularity in new markets. If the seats sell, go back next year... if not, pick another place on the map.

There is no chance whatsover that the NFL could compete with EPL.......No one in Europe, or the rest of the world for that matter, cares about American "Football".NFL Europe completely failed, and putting a NFL team in London seems like a colosal mistake. Again, better off putting a team in Canada or Mexico. In Toronto, there is already a massive following of the NFL, and a an NFL team would sell out easily every week.Seems to be long term path for the Bills......whether Buffalonians like it or not.

Higher taxes and cost of living in London bound to be an issue. Not to mention the language - some NFL player is going to tell a London girl that she has a nice "fanny", and he's going to get his jaw broken.

This whole reg season game in London garbage cant end soon enough. Any Bucs fans chime in? This is the second time in three season they have lost a home game for this nonsense.

Not ending any time soon.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/mobile/american_football/15268512.stm

Will never ever ever happen.
Dunno about that. Goodell seems dead set on it and the Grazers (Glazers?) that own an EPL league and the Bucs are probably funneling a lot of "encouragement" Goodell's way. I'm extremely scared that it'll happen, which also means a SB will be there. I seriously think Goodell will destroy the league as we know it.I'm all on board with a Canadian team. They actually show interest in the NFL and it's much more territorial than an overseas team. Bah, this whole issue sucks. We shouldn't even be talking about it.

The NFL is a business. Period. Goodell, and others, see a huge untapped market in Europe. But it's going to take patience and a lot more than simply putting a team there. You have to get people interested as kids. Adults are too hard to turn on to new things. But there is money over there, no doubt about it. And it's an intriguing game once you engage it on an x's and o's level. People just haven't had the exposure yet. Sure, there will be some who will reject simply for the fact that it's American, but that'll pass. This is not a matter of if, but when. The world is getting smaller.

Watching the Bucs game...they had Goodell in the booth and he was saying how the Bucs will be regularly playing games in London because the Bucs want to expand their brand on an international scale and also the Glazers own ManU -- got me to wondering if the Bucs could be moved to London at some point, with the Bucs not getting a ton of support in Tampa.
