NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (1 Viewer)

Rags/Ducks starting on NBCSN.
I couldnt stay up past the first period, but it was a solid back and forth in the first.

The Rangers have won 11 of their last 12 games and are still 4th in the metro. Really wish they could start the year off better. This is the third year in a row

But last night was a good win so hopefully they are playing well when it matters. Talbot in tonight vs the Kings

Same here. Went to bed after the first period. Both teams played pretty darn good in the first period. At times they were flying around the ice.

Nice to see the Rangers pull off the first win on the road. West coast trips are always difficult.

Caps are looking like a real team this year under Trotz.Getting great goaltending from Holtby, secondary scoring from quite a few and a solid D in both ends.

All I really wanted was a team that was hard to play against and Trotz is slowly but surely making this happen.Ovechkin will never be confused for a Selke candidate but he is no longer the huge liability on the ice defensively that he once was and that's because he continues to skate and has cut back on his coasting(still not out of his game but much better so far).It also helps they added depth to the D core and have bought into the system Trotz is teaching and have taken Mike Green away from the heavy minutes and facing the tougher competition.

5 points out in the Metro with a game in hand with the Rags coming on strong as well.Top 4 in the Metro are looking like solid teams but the rest(with the exception of Columbus)look like they are ready to fold up shop so this could be a fun race to see who takes the top spot.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2015/01/07/toronto-maple-leafs-phil-kessel-not-to-blame-for-teams-unsuccessful-rebuild/

TORONTO Somewhere along the way, Phil Kessel became the problem.

It was not enough that the Toronto Maple Leafs forward led the team in scoring the last five years. Or that he is ranked in the top 10 in the NHL in goals and points this season. Or that since he played his first game in Toronto, he has not missed a single game despite often being banged up.

According to one former head coach, Kessel is the reason why Randy Carlyle was fired on Tuesday. According to others, he is the reason why the Leafs will never win a Stanley Cup.

As Kessel said on Wednesday, I dont know what you expect out of me out there. Obviously you expect more.

Well, yes. Kessel is expected to be Sidney Crosby or Jonathan Toews. He is expected to be something that he is not and can never be, which is unfair to both Kessel and the Leafs.

When Brian Burke made the blockbuster trade for Kessel and gave the Boston Bruins two first-round picks and a second-round pick, the Leafs knew what they were getting a goal-scoring sniper. Period. Burke predicted Kessel would score buckets of goals and did not promise anything else.

No one said Kessel would be a future captain. In his six seasons in Toronto, Kessel has never even worn an A on a regular basis. If you think that is a problem or a sign that he might not be the type of core player you build around, dont blame Kessel. Blame the Leafs, who signed Kessel to an eight-year, US$64-million contract after watching him develop into a one-dimensional sniper before their eyes.

The Chicago Blackhawks have a Phil Kessel in their lineup; his name is Patrick Kane. No one complains that he is not a leader or a 200-foot player or that he is lazy because the Blackhawks also have Toews, Marian Hossa and Duncan Keith.

The Leafs dont have those kinds of core players to insulate Kessel from the unwanted and possibly unfair attention. All they have is a player whose talents and potential goal-scoring production are being wasted. In the last four seasons, only Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos have score more goals than Kessel. And Kessel recorded those numbers with an inferior centre (his buddy Tyler Bozak) and on a team that lacks secondary scoring to limit opponents defensive attention on him.

Blame Kessel? Is it his fault that the Leafs mismanaged the salary cap by signing David Clarkson and Stéphane Robidas to bad contracts? Is it his fault that they have not found a legitimate No. 1 centre or a No. 1 defenceman in his time here?

Yes, blame him for not back-checking or for going cold every two weeks, as Ron Wilson asserted in his incendiary radio interview. But his biggest problem seems to be that he is the best player on a mediocre team.

Obviously we havent been winning, Kessel said Wednesday morning. Weve made the playoffs once out here. Obviously thats what happens. Theyre going to come after you. Obviously its never fun but its part of the business.

Yeo flipped out at practice this morning. Russo saying like something he's never seen before. and he's covered Mike Keenan.

Koivu and Kuemper both left practice hurt or sick. Scandella not practicing and Parise still hurt.

Thursday should be fun!
I watched the video. Russo cant take the site of confrontation. Not much to see other then a coach swearing at his players.

*yawn*

Going to stick up for Denver Pioneer Tyler Bozak here - is he a #1 center? no - but he is far from "inferior". How in the hell did Kessel get all those goals with an "inferior" center? He plays both ends of the ice(many times to make up for Kessel) - always has and always will. He wins draws that set up a lot of goals- he's pretty darn good if you ask me. He is part of the reason Kessel has scored that many goals. Any coincidence that his injury was the missing link in the Boston meltdown? If anyone needs to be a whipping boy in that opinion piece it's Kadri - underperforms all the time. Toronto media suck.

the end of the video was pretty funny when the guys were all sitting in a circle at center ice and then you just see Yeo in the background along the boards yelling and slamming his stick.

maybe they should dump him and bring in Bylsma?

And everyone in Toronto--the media included--seems to think Babcock will be tripping over himself for the chance to coach the Leafs.

I'd prefer Yeo but in terms of system they're identical and the money is irrelevant so not a huge deal if they change, and he's the name that's been rumored.

The best career move Bozak ever made was becoming best friends with Phil Kessel. Bozak is a fine #2 centre who's great on faceoffs and breakaways, but he is inferior to almost every other #1 centre of the league. In terms of possession he's consistently one of the worst players in the league, which considering how strong he is on faceoffs is pretty remarkable.

GB these Sabres. Getting it done in a must lose game tonight.
If you track Corsi numbers at all, and I'm fairly new to them, WGR reviewed Buff to Edm & Car today & it is an astronomical difference.
yeah

Sabres belong at the bottom despite that hot streak they had late in 2014.

http://www.puckalytics.com/teamstats.html

they are dead last at 37.6 here. Carolina and Edmonton are both around league average.

when they start unloading pending UFAs like Stafford and Stewart, they could get even worse. I'm still hoping they win the lottery regardless of what happens, but would be nice to lock up Eichel no matter what.

loss is a loss I guess, but that was the best game the Wild has put together in a long, long time. Well, other than the boner major by Vanek...oof. They play like that the rest of the year they'll be fine, dominated almost all of that game and very encouraging to see.

Also, #### Bickell

Just a question as to how other fans see the Predators right now?

Was some of this always there and Trotz's style just lent itself to playing those closer defensive games all the time?

Is it just having Rinne healthy again right now?

Plus Forsberg coming on and playing lights out?

Definitely exciting to see a little different brand of hockey going on.

sometimes when a coach stays in one place for too long, the message gets stale. I think Laviolette has generally done pretty well when he shows up too.

I don't think they are as good as their record suggests, but they also upgraded their talent. Forsberg is on fire, Ribeiro was a great pickup, and they also added James Neal. Young guys like Forsberg, Josi, Wilson, Ellis, all making key contributions and they still will probably get a lot more from Seth Jones at some point.

Agreed...I was sort of sad to see Trotz go...but at the same time...also thought his style was done here.

From what I have read...not sure how long we will see Laviolette around...how long before his message is stale. Very rare to have a coach around as long as they did stick with Trotz.

THe young guys are exciting...but as always feel so much of it will again fall on Rinne being spectacular to really make a run.

Feel a little better than they can manufacture some scoring though.

At least 50% with Rinne there

25% getting scoring with Forsberg they never have had a great scorer

20% getting over the Suter deal huge loss on blue line

5% on coaching change
