NINTENDO Switch (1 Viewer)

Anyone experience issues with the dock and, if so, had any luck with 3rd party ones as a replacement? Using the original dock, and it docks fine initially, but after about a minute the input on the TV no longer recognizes it being there. Not sure if it's a dock issue, or maybe something with the port on the Switch, where the dock plugs into it.

Any link to good resources on comparing the models, and the extras to get?

We may be trying to get one for my youngest, but, I also wouldn't mind some Mario Kart action to relive the youth and compete with my boys.

Can you do multiplayer on say a TV from a single Switch, ie is it like other consoles in that way? What controllers other than the Joy-Con are there - my old and bigger hands would probably struggle with them.

Just starting to research the options now.

Yeah. Can do multiplayer on some games like Mario kart on the tv, split screen. Highly recommend the Pro controllers. Like $60 but worth every penny if you play on the tv a lot.

100% worth it.  I felt like I was going to crush the joycons every time my son and I played.  Plus they drifted terribly even after multiple shipments for repair.  The pro controllers feel industrial strength and we've had not one issue with them.

When it disconnects from the TV is the green light still on (the charging light) on the dock?

Guess I will be looking for a Switch in stock and at least 2 pro controllers (or should I get 4 so we could do 4 player Mario Kart?, or do I just make two of the boys.. or their mother, use a joycon?)

I am leaning towards just two, as I am sure once the initial novelty wears off, the older two will be back to Call of Duty or whatever they are playing with their buddies and not getting their butts kicked by their dad in Mario Kart.

My 11 year old is big into zelda.  He heard about relics of the past, but we can't find it on eshop.  How do we get it?

it's a mod (not Nintendo DLC) so it won't be on e-shop. no idea how to download it, but Google is probably best bet here

Sent in both joy cons with drift issue for repair to Nintendo. Surprisingly, they sent us two new controllers in under two weeks.

Got Final Fantasy 12 for my son for his birthday, but it kinda sucks (at least compared to Zelda BOTW, which was awesome).

I had a similar issue when I was plugging it into an HDMI switch... once I stopped doing that it worked just fine again.

2 Pro controlers Max... if you want to have 4 way races, pick something like this up - they are fun!  https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Joy-Wheel-Set-Switch/dp/B06XJBVSLY

If you haven't yet try another device on that HDMI cable and see if the same issue is happening (could be the TV's HDMI port).

Nintendo does have a pretty great customer service line as well.

Any tips on how to buy a Switch console?  Sold out in most places and my daughter is interested in one.

They are currently in stock at bestbuy.com, or at least were as of about 10 minutes ago.  I was able to get the Blue/Red console and two of the Pro Controllers, should be delivered next week (just need to hope they are concealed in box so my 9 year old doesn't see his birthday/Christmas present - his birthday is December 27th).

Amazon's 2nd best selling video game of 2020 is a yet-to-be-released compilation of 3 old Mario games. physical copies are sold out and its release date is a few days away. I mean aside from making the best 1st-party games, Nintendo knows how to create demand--this time through manufactured scarcity.

also, the Switch is awesome. Just waiting for them to release more of the classics

if I get a second switch (lite) do I have to re-purchase games, or can I just log in with the same account?

My sister has already pre-ordered hers.

I keep checking to see what classics have been released, but then end up playing some I have on my original NES system.  Want Contra just to use the Konami Code again.

It's wack that those Mario games aren't remakes, but simply emulated and some retextuturizing.   Mario 64 will still be in 3:4 even.

i think the fact they are emulated and only selling for a short time might be a precursor to Nintendo emulating more of those era games (64, GC, Wii) as part of their online package, which is what a lot of people have been waiting for. or maybe they aren't planning to do that at all. seems like it's been a pretty big missing piece considering how robust the virtual console was.

but yeah, they are making money hand over fist on this considering they aren't really ports and probably didn't have to spend a lot of time in development.

I highly recommend Animal Crossing.  I dogged it when my kid wanted it, because I knew it was one of those crack non-action games.   He bought it and was initially disappointed because he didn't know how to do anything.  I ended figuring it out for him, so I basically was catching fish and butterflies for a few months every morning.  I haven't played in a while but now he plays everyday.  He actually has to read in the game, and it has a few more things to think about than say mario kart or splatoon.

So, my son turns 7 in July and apparently is suddenly interested in video games (even though he has only played some very limited iPhone apps).

It seems that the Switch is the most kid friendly of the current systems.  I also have a 4 year old son, who will want to play and do everything his brother does.

I know nothing about the Switch though.  What should I buy?  What extra controllers/components do I need?  What games do I buy (or is everything downloaded now)?

Any other tips?

TIA.

I only have a few games for mine (Mariokart, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Super Smash Bros, 2K) so I can't offer many suggestions outside of those classics.

The one extra thing you'll need is a micro SD card since the device itself doesn't have much storage (32gb I think). It already comes with 2 joy-con controllers so your sons will be able to play against each other in games like Mariokart etc. A lot of people like the Pro controller, but I never got one since I usually play in handheld mode rather than on the TV.

Pro controllers are well worth it imo.  We spent many weeks of the first few months my son had his switch waiting for repaired/replacement joycons to ship back and forth to Nintendo.  Bought two pro controllers, and have had zero issues with either in 18 months of daily use.

Just bought a Switch, 2 pro controller, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Game Builder Garage along with a memory card.  Kids are expensive . . . .

My 8 year old has been asking non-stop for one of these since he got to play at his friend's and cousin's house.  Is this the best system for younger kids?  Should we just stick with tablet?

why is nintendo all capital letters i hate those things stop it take that to the bank brohans

My 7 year old had the same thing happen. Played their cousins switch and now the iPad games don't cut it. That was over a year ago. I didn't get it for him for birthday or Christmas last year. But with the new model out I went for it and have pre ordered the OLED model. The iPad with Apple Arcade seems cool to me with all the games he has access to. Although I can see the appeal of actual game controllers.

We don't have a the latest game console so this will also double as that. We will see.
