No Conference Championships for me this weekend... (1 Viewer)

I think the players should play until one side drops dead.

That way, me, the fat guy on the couch, gets the definitive winner I deserve and crave, which is really all that matters here.

Sounds horrible.

But don't worry.. in the ridiculous one-off playoff format of the NFL where one team has a clear advantage of being at home, you really don't get to learn who the best team is. An errant bounce of the ball or bad referee call could end up being the difference in the winners, not the actual play on the field.

So you can use that to quench your frustration.
:goodposting:

Like in the KC/Indy game, it was just an errant bounce that caused the Chiefs to blow a 28 point 2nd half lead.
I'm sure if i re-watched the tape close there would be an errant bounce of the ball or crucial penalty that I can't remember that helped to swing the game.

I mean, when Luck did his best Air-Jordan impression to get that TD after the fumble... if the ball had fallen in a slightly different trajectory it may have been recovered by Chiefs D and the game would've been over.

Not to mention all the bad beat injuries the Chiefs suffered.

Now, I ain't mad.. I was fine with the colts advancing... after all they clobbered the Chiefs at home in lieu of any luck or bad calls just a few weeks before... so if anything the Chiefs going in and beating them would've taught us NOTHING... no different than when the Pats beat the Giants AT HOME in week 17 only to then be beaten by them a few weeks later on the heels of a "helmet catch". Were the Giants a better team? NO WAY... but they get to hoist the trophy, robbing all of us of being able to say we saw the greatest team ever to play case closed.
I'd say the Giants made the right adjustments and were the better team on that day.

If you're letting a single play define who is the greatest team ever, you're doing it wrong.
Based on Dentist's posts in this thread, it is wrong for the NFL to determine the better team by staging actual football games.
just need best of 3's.

Pats 2007 was the best team I've ever seen in all the years of football i've watched (disclaimer: NOT a Pats fan or hater) but I can't claim that they are the GOAT team due to that helmet catch EVER though they beat the same damn team at THEIR house (harder situation) just a few weeks prior.... BECAUSE of a helmet catch.

Everything was going to be nice and tidy... GOAT QB, GOAT team... tons of debates and discussions effectively ended.

If it had been best of 3, we would've been good... it's just like when a stupid 13 seed beats a #4 seed in the NCAA's... if it was best of 3, wouldn't happen
Did you even watch the game? Was 14 points the fewest the Pats scored all season? Was the Giants D not in Brady's face all game and did they not sack him 5 times? Yet you point to one freak play and say the Giants didn't deserve to win? WTF???? :loco:
I'm saying there should be best of 3's
And you believe this is in any way a practical solution in pro football?
Practicality is generally the enemy of obtaining the best possible results in any type of study.

Yet somehow Chess, the NBA, and Tennis get it right a LOT
Okay, I'm jumping out of the boat now.

So in your mind, if Tyree doesn't make that catch, the Pats and Brady (who couldn't affect the play since, you know, he doesn't play defence) are the greatest team ever. But since he made the catch, they aren't? That makes sense to you?

Celebrate the birthday on Saturday or next weekend. WTF
You married? This would play out well for you?

My wife does a lot for me, I just want to kick n scream in here on Friday anyways.
Saturday is a no brainer. No work the next day, and if you're talking a nice restaurant, that's the time to go. Why should she care if it's a day before her birthday? What if her birthday fell on a Tuesday? Most people would throw a party on the nearest weekend. Tell her you're watching the games but you're going to the best restaurant in town on Saturday night and you have a nice surprise for her Sunday morning. Bring her breakfast in bed, some jewelry and a nice romp in the sheets. Any wife should be thrilled with that.
This seems just so obvious. I'm no marriage savant, but if you make your wife happy she won't care what day it's on. If you get all mopey because you're missing football, it doesn't matter what you do, she won't be happy, and you'll have missed football to piss off your wife. Go Saturday. Knock it out of the park. Then watch football on Sunday. Duh.

But since he made the catch, they aren't?
New England 2007 is not the GOAT, they lost the Super Bowl. The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the best team ever and they have the Lombardi Trophy to prove it on top of a perfect record.
In comparison to teams of their time, maybe... But in fairness, the 2013 Jags could beat the 72 Dolphins.
You're embarrassing yourself Hucks, that's hard to do.

Coming from the guy with a broken betamax who isn't allowed to watch the Conference Championships - I'll let that slide

Take off work Monday. Get her a bag of gummie bears as a present on Saturday night and make sure she eats them all. Then you'll have all of Sunday for football.

Dentist, I think you just hate sports GB
I like tennis and the NBA

the best players/teams with a ridiculously high percentage of the time in those sports.

I don't hate sports, I hate variance and luck... it literally destroyed me in tournament poker.

They would be outmatched by about 50 pounds on each side of the line. Bigger, faster, stronger players

It's an interesting statement though. Considering that the game is much faster now, and the advancements in scheming, game planning, and the conditioning of the players, I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. And the Jags definitely improved over the second half of the season.

My wife wanted an October wedding. I told her that was a terrible idea, because if the Red Sox went to the World Series, everyone would be looking for a bar at the reception with a TV, or they'd leave early. We had been to a wedding where that happened, and the bride was in tears. So we booked our wedding a year in advance, for November 3rd 2007. And it's a good thing we did, as it was just days after the Red Sox won their second title in four years. Unfortunately, we also had a tropical storm that hit the morning of our wedding and ended right after the doors closed on the reception hall. And then the following day, we were on an airplane during the Patriots-Colts matchup during the Patriots' 16-0 season. Can't plan for everything. At least I got to watch the game on iTunes without knowing the result in the honeymoon suite.

Im in this boat, i think the dolphins would get destroyed. Plus i cant stand those champagne drinking fools all happy when a team loses...

I moved it where it belongs in the Shark Pool... Interesting discussion but I think the Jags roll.

Ok.. let's break this down.

I have MAD respect for what the 72 fins did.

HOWEVER, there is no question that no only could the 2013 Jags beat them, they would blow them out if you could somehow stage a matchup between those teams.

In 1972 the players were lighter, slower, didn't do year round fitness and conditioning..

I'd wager to say 2012 Alababa University might have given the '72 Phins a run for their money honestly.. and I say that with the utmost respect for the PHins.

GOAT doesn't mean that you would be the best TODAY. It means you were the best team against your peers at the time.

And you have to give ADDED respect to that '72 Phins team because they were in the Super Bowl in '71 and then after that in '73 and DEFENDED it... All those things add credibility.

So the '72 Phins are the GOAT team even if they would get beat by a college team in 2013.

You may need to do some research. I pulled a player at random. Bob Heinz. was a DT. He was 6'5" and 270 lbs. That's a little light but it isn't 50 lbs. I looked up one of the guards as well. Larry Little was 6'2" 265. So again a little lighter than average but if these guys were playing today there is no way they wouldn't be able to carry another few pounds. Now I didn't look up everyone. I just picked two guys at random so there may well be some guys who were lighter but it isn't this big difference overall. Not sure your theory holds water based on weights anyway.

Yeah but you combine even a 20lb advantage with better conditioning and technique, by the 4th quarter those Phins players are getting pushed back 10 yards on every play.

I would be curious to see the 40 times from that era, if they even exist.

That team would get killed in the nfl. I agree too...a college team would beat them if they were just dropped into 2014.

Yeah because we all know the team with the heaviest roster always wins. Not sure why they bother to play the games just weight everyone and go from there. For Dentist we would weight them 3 times before we gave them the win of course.

You guys have an incredibly simplistic view of the game.

No team that is 30-50 pounds lighter on every line position has a chance to win. It's not even plausible. They very likely didn't have any 4.3-4.4 guys either.

It's ok to admit it was a different game back then.

Seriously, I know it sounds ridiculous but since the games will inevitably be decided by some new silly rules or the refs screwing it up I tend to agree with you. I haven't been disappointed yet this season, every week there are a few games that send chills down my spine. It's tough to sit and enjoy a game because you get pulled out at the most crucial times. Every time there is a big hit in the game I expect a yellow flag to be thrown.
Seasons to exploit/avoid

So it's a stupid comparison. Great. Let's talk about it some more.
Better than talking about MOP not caring about his wife.
You lie.
About which part? That it is better or that MOP doesn't care about his wife?
Tough question. Maybe a "does MOP care about his wife?" poll is in order.

Anyway, look, I open the MOP threads for the crazy - but I stay for the ambivalence.

Sometimes FSU loses with decided weight advantages…not in 2013/2014 but other seasons they have fallen to teams with far less to work with athletically. Wasn't Florida bigger and faster than some of those 8 teams they lost to this year? Gus might not be able to out coach old Don Shula as well.

I doubt FSU has lost to too many teams with an average Oline weight of 260.

Some team named Southern Miss marched into the Doak in 1991 against a stacked FSU team with huge weight advantages over them across the board and somehow beat the Noles that day.

For a gift certificate to La Teresita on Coumbus, who was the visiting QB that day at the Doak?

Meh. I'm with MOP. Might watch the games, might not. If the afc game is at night I will probably catch part of it. Its hard to dedicate time to a 3+ hour commercial fest contest between a bunch of guys that have no real bearing on my life when there are so many other things going on that are more important in the grand scheme of things. I'm going to spend the afternoon hanging out with my boys. There was plenty of time to watch football before they were born and there will be plenty of time to watch it when they are too old to want to spend time with me. Ultimately family is what really matters.

Your kids will be there 24/7/365. These games only happen once. This might be the last Brady vs. Manning playoff showdown EVER. What kind of example are you setting by missing that??

:lmao:

A little lighter than average? There are high school teams that average 300+ across the line these days.
