No contending team trading with a contender (1 Viewer)

Yesterday I was informed that Team A (2-7 no shot of playoffs) is going to be trading Peyton Manning to Team B (6-3) for Megatron, Matt Ryan and Roddy White. Team A also has Big Ben so he is deep at QB.

Aside from our trade deadline (which is next week) we have no rules prohibiting a team that is out of contention trading with a team in the playoff hunt.

Here are our trade rules:

In general, all trades will be approved unless it appears that 2 or more owners are in collusion. Collusion is defined as making a trade, dropping a player, or taking any other action designed to bolster another owner’s chance of winning without direct self-benefit and/or to the disadvantage to one’s own team. Note: An “unwise” move is NOT collusion. It is NOT the commissioner 's duty to evaluate whether or not a trade is "fair".

Our league has a rule that awards $10 for each victory during the regular season. This continues through NFL week 17 for teams that either don't make the playoffs and for teams after they have lost in the playoffs. So there is still at least $70 left on the table for Team A if he wins out.

I know for sure that at least one owner in the playoff hunt is going to complain loudly if and when this trade goes down.

I am the commissioner and currently in 2nd place but I don't see any way that I can deny this trade based on our current rules.

Thoughts?

Money is still on the line, I see no issue with this. Plus a 6-7 team has made the playoffs in my league a few times.

That is my opinion too. I don't have a problem with a trade where a team is trying to win and money is on the line. In fact I would rather have this way than a team that gives up and becomes a pushover for anyone he faces down the stretch.

Why would you have this rule in the league, presumably to encourage all teams to remain competitive even if they fall out the playoff hunt, then punish such a team for doing what this rule wants it to do?

It's a fair trade. What's the problem? Owners who whine about a trade based on self interest make my butt hurt.

Why should a non-contending team not be allowed the right to win? They paid their dues, and if it gives them a kick to play spoiler or what have you, it's thier money, thier fantasy season, and the trade deadline doesn't have any explicitly written rules telling non-contenders to stay on the sidelines and watch and not meddle with contenders.

Thanks for the replies and I agree completely that he should be able to trade. I was just seeing if anyone had a valid reason why this guys should be pissed.

Lock both rosters. Commish should set their lineups for the rest of the season, both owners forfeit their entry fees and are not invited back next season. I would also call the police, though I can see where some may find that to be overkill.

Cool. As I said I am in second place and doing this will help out my team immensely.

When this trade goes down, please post all of the whiny responses here.

If you dont want anyone to ##### then tell them they should have offered more. I bet they can't as they will lose key players or already have Rodgers etc and dont need Manning.

Team A (2-7 no shot of playoffs)
Couldn't this team win its last four and finish 6-7 and maybe make the playoffs?
Possibly although this year we are using a combination of W-L & point scored ranking. It would be very tough.
Very tough = not eliminated and even in leagues without that $10 rule should allow trades in that case. If you are going to put a rule in for next year I would say they have to mathematically be eliminated from the playoffs not to allow a trade, which in this case is not true.

Again, I disagree teams out of contention should not be allowed to trade. Every team should try as hard as it can every week, regardless of record. If making a trade is part of that, it's fine.

This

Last season my team was racked with injuries right before our league's trade deadline. It's a keeper league with limits on how many years a team can keep a franchise player. After suffering a one-point loss and getting to the six loss mark, I decided to make a move for A. Rogers (post collarbone injury) because the team that he was on couldn't keep him after the season. My logic was that instead of entering the free-agent pool for this year's draft, I'd make that team an offer they couldn't refuse. It worked, I sent WR's D. Thomas and D. Jackson for Rogers.

Heard a lot of complaints, my reply was simple: What did you offer?

That team won the championship last year, I'm doing pretty well this year. Crybabies gonna cry
