Notes from Kiper on Mike & Mike (1 Viewer)

Think the AD hype is going to approach the Reggie hype
Reggie lived up to it so I don't know that it was hype.
Normally I agree with you LH but come on, did he really live to the hype?He did not even rush for 600 yards! For where he was taken in the draft he served his purpose of helping to gain fan interest but he was not a difference maker as a runner and his only real impact was as a compliment to the better back in Deuce as a pass catcher out of the backfield. While I do not want a Reggie vs Deuce debate, it does strick me as odd that you would say that Bush lived to the hypeTom
I totally disagree with this. If you had only watched the first half of the season you could make this argument, maybe. Because even in the first have he had a large impact on every game. Maybe he wasnt putting up huge numbers every sunday but he was helping the team win in many ways, especially in the passing game. In the second half of the season he most certainly lived up to the hype of the runner he could be. I live in New Orleans and I watch every saints game. In the first half I was very doubtful that Reggie could ever be the featured back, but I'm pretty convinced now he can do it all. After week nine, 5 out of 8 games he averaged 4.8 yards or better per carry. Three out of the five averaging 6 yards or more. Out of the entire season he had two games he averaged less then 5.5 yards a reception. I dont have his first down and reception stats available but they are gawdy I will assure you. He made countless plays throughout the year and took tons of pressure off brees. He lived upLets not forget it was his rookie year and he's not a smash mouth back, it takes a little adjustingYards on the Season: 1307 8 TD'sPost Season: 225 2 TD'sWhat did he have to do?Keep in mind thats in a 2 back system with Deuce

Mel Kiper was finally back on Mike & Mike yesterday. Here is what he had to say.

He spent much of the time discussing Russell's pro day workout at LSU. Kiper did not seem as impressed with his workout as McShay and others. He said he does not put as much stock in a player's individual workout as many do, unless it is really bad. Russell is NOT the best player in this draft behind CJ, Peterson and Thomas. The Raiders could still take him based on need. Nothing from his workout would move him from 4 to 1 in Kiper's opinion. Russell will need to be ready right away.

He was asked about the chances of the Raiders trading out of the spot. Kiper says that would not make sense due to their need at QB and that they seemingly like Russell. He said he was kind of in between on Russell and that he is not sold on him yet.

I really like Russel to be a solid NFL QB, but just like every NFL QB Im sure he will need to season a few years.

IMO people get down on young QBs way too quickly. But then again I'm all for hiring veterans at that position.

Russel kinda reminds me a little of Dante Culpepper, except Russell was in a bigtime SEC football program (which I would think would have trained Russel better for the NFL than Central Florida). I haven't seen much of him, but I do follow the SEC and think he is a solid QB. Not amazing, just good.

I think he is a safe pick for the Raiders.

I heard Kiper on College Gameday today. Why is he talking about College B-ball?

Granted we all have our opinions, but this is ESPN we're talking about. Why have an NFL draft guy for College b-ball?

And why is MKJr signing on to be talking about anything but his area of expertise?

He hosts the Gameday show pretty much every Saturday so he talks about all topics, whatever is in season.

Do you ever post about any sports besides football? If so, why would Football Guys have a guy signing on to discuss something other than football?

Makes no sense. Not like ESPN doesn't have lots of guys who have at least some connection to the subject of the show.

I'm not paid to co-host a radio show about topics I'm not well versed in, nor would I want to be a guy who is allegedly an expert on one topic trying to give his opinion on other things. The last place you'll find me is taking calls on topics I don't know well. That's just a waste of everyone's time.John Clayton has this down. Why doesn't Mel?

Kiper was back on this week and here is what he had to say.

* Brady Quinn- #3 is as far as he will drop.

* A lot rides on Detroit and they have made moves that preclude them from taking Quinn, Peterson, CJ2, Thomas. (Harrington history, KJ health ?s, WR history, trading for Foster).

* Oakland is pretty much locked on Russell.

* Detroit could trade out of the #2 pick and choose Gaines Adams. "From what we know, Detroit will not be there on draft day."

* TB or ATL could trade up for CJ2.

* J Anderson dropping to middle of 1st, Joe Staley has moved up, Nelson and Griffin have moved into 1st round (I thought they were already)

* Detroit could go with Trent Edwards later as he is gaining momentum.

* QBs after the top 2- Stanton's stock has dropped, Edwards is 3rd, John Beck is 5th. Kevin Kolb is next.

* Jets could be interested in a WR like Meachem late in the 1st. Jets have a lot of need areas. Cowboys could look at a WR as well.

Merrill Hoge was on ESPN Radio today as well, discussing the draft.

* Doesn't think Quinn belongs in the top 10 and unsure about him being in the 1st round. He said he laughs at the comparison between Russell and Quinn. Russell is a type of player that comes along once every 10 years.

* Quinn's accuracy is the main problem.

* Russell's mechanics are much more sound than Quinn.

* We would not even be discussing Quinn if he played at a smaller school or didn't play under Weis.

* Talked about "Paul" Beck :bag: from BYU and said he was much better than Quinn.

* Went back and called Quinn a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

* Says Peterson is not getting enough attention and anyone that passes him will regret it. Called him the "Cashier" because he will make teams pay that pass on him.

This guy seems to bash QBs every year.

Kiper has hosted that college game/weekend show for years. I beleive he started doing so when he still lived in Baltimore and his co-host was the guy who is Kornheiser's (sp) radio sidekick. As I remember, he used to host 4 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. Then he moved on to Saturdays only and now the show has even been cut an hour. Eventually, I am guessing he gets rid of the general sports gig, but this is not a "new" develpoment and in fact how he became a year around fixture at ESPN versus just their draft expert.

Hoge is an idiot. :goodposting: He can stick it up his "Factor Back".

Between all of the Imus talk, Kiper visited Mike & Mike on Friday.

Some points he talked about-

Possible trades-

* Detroit would like to move down, but may have trouble finding a parter. They may be getting offers, but not value. If they can't move, who do they take? TB or Atlanta would like to move up for CJ2.

* There are several players that Cleveland would like and they would lke to move down to around 5. Arizona could move uo for Thomas.

* Mock drafts are fluid based on information coming in daily.

* Top 5 players

1. CJ2

2. Thomas

3.AD

4. Russell

5. Quinn

* Thinks Russell going to Oakland is pretty much set in stone. They still regret passing on Cutler/Leinart last year. Detroit is in the same position.
