NY offers free tuition (1 Viewer)

It covers the tuition line item on this chart.

A good step. That line item can be reduced in other ways, as noted throughout the thread. I also agree with the use of sliding scales and percentages. Um, hello basic math?
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. It takes time for these students to get educated through this free tuition program. It takes even more time for these students to grow up, get their feet wet in politics, learn how to run a campaign, and get elected to the legislature. Then we'll finally have a legislature that can grasp basic math.

Are you implying that what millions of students are currently doing can't be done?  "Deep thinking there"
No but every post reads like you are a victim.   Yeah Yeah you walked up hill to school both ways and everyone else should.

I have no clue how people who aren't millionaires survive in NYC.

I only know a handful of people who live there, and none of them live by themselves. They tell me that owning a home is basically impossible.

owning a home is easy... if you already own it. needing to buy or even rent a home- fuhggedabowdit.

Good for NY. Hopefully ( per the future Civil War thread), NY is using the money  they normally send to the freeloading Red States of the Union for this.  Way to keep it in house, NY!

They aren't doing it.  Student loan defaults are skyrocketing.
I would guess that a majority of these defaults were people who didn't give much thought on how their college education would translate to a higher income after college....

Maybe don't take out six figures in loans for an art/history/sociology/etc degree and have no clue how you'll will make money after college.

Maybe we should make it illegal to be poor and fix the fundamental problem here.  And let's nevermind that the point of the Einstein above is that students ARE making it fine.

Interesting. In reading about the effect of public subsidies on tuition cost, studies seem to find that federal dollars cause an increase while state dollars do not.

A corollary to this is that the reason tuition has increased is because of increased federal spending and a reduction in state spending.

I'm still not sure about "free" but I'm warning to the idea of more state spending.

I guess a question I have then is did state spending decrease BECAUSE of increased federal spending?

Well, you did. You elected a proxy and this is what was decided.
I don't understand how this whole voting system works. you mean to say I vote for somebody and they do things on my behalf?

unfortunately- this wasn't something I recall ever being discussed as an issue.

If allowed to thrive things like free tuition and single payer health care are a huge net benefit to society.

A healthy, educated work force contribute far more to society than an unhealthy, uneducated work force.

Oh, dont be alarmed. No matter who you elected, you will get screwed over. Have a good day.

Playing along here...

are these students allowed to get degrees in dance, theatre and poetry?
I think I know where you're going with this.  I'm not sure about the whole idea of free college but I'd feel a lot better if we were steering people towards degrees that are actually in high demand.

We'll it's not free to taxpayers now is it?

And how do people treat things they're given at no cost?

How long until we start demanding free food for everyone?
Yeah!  And while we're at it, screw those kindergarteners too!  I'm tired of footing the bill for them.

And that road in your neighborhood.  I don't drive on it.  If you want a road there then put up a damn toll booth you moocher.

Tuition prices are skyrocketing because the supply of College is so much lower than the Demand. It's completely moronic to think that raising the demand even higher by making it "free" won't further exacerbate the problem. Good luck New York...enjoy the $200k/year tuition costs that result from this...all paid by the taxpayer, whether those people get any benefit or not.

What a bizarre contention but I will go equally bizarre in the other direction.

Kill college athletics.

or ill go in the other-other direction.....show me an example of anything that the Gov't pays for and the price actually went down?

So what you're saying is that we should collectivize everything...comrade?

If I, as a 45 year old man, want to go back to school to study art history because I might have an unction to draw a picture someday.... you should foot that bill?

Now, if you were adroit at making an argument instead of slathering a non sequitur in snark you could probably convince me that it's in society's interest to invest in providing workers with productive skills usable in a modern world economy.

But I get that it's less mentally taxing to simply be a richard.

What?  Your post that I quoted was exactly what you're describing here.  Just a bunch of snark.  Free stuff isn't free!!!  Why don't we all just be socialists then?!??!  Real "adroit" stuff there.

People have already made the argument about a better society with more educated people, so I didn't feel the need to double up there.

How about instead of your snarky one liners that could be used to argue against literally any government funded program in existence, you tell us why this one is crossing the line on what tax money should be used for compared to all of the other awesome stuff we use it for?  Adroitly, if you would ;)

I'm sorry. You're right and I really was being as bad as I was accusing you of being.

So is it capitalistic supply and demand that is driving costs or government subsidizing tuition that is driving the cost?

Either way if you are a capitalist it is a counterproductive position to be against tuition-free college and single payer health care. They make a better society with more taxpayers. In other words it creates a systems with fewer people sponging off the system.

But whatever you do SAVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!! It's okay for my college tuition dollars to help pay the salary of the highest paid state employees in pretty much every state.

Right?

Hell yeah!   Round up all the poor people and incarcerate them...you know, give them a place to live, food, basic healthcare...hey, wait a minute...
