NYC sanitation exam (1 Viewer)

Moops- low 100s is lower middle class at best here. Pretty much hand to mouth until your over 200.

But this is only from my experience living here... I'll defer to your expansive knowledge on the subject?.
Maybe living in Manhattan, but in the outer boroughs 119 k plus bennies and no children I would feel like I had it made in the shade.
Living solo, even in Manhattan, would be decent at that wage.

I should have classified I meant family of 4.

How much does quality of life decrease with each subsequent offspring?

Amazing how the median income is 50 grand yet anyone making less than 200 grand is struggling to feed themselves.

$100k is definitely lower middle class in NYC. I live in a 1300 sq ft townhouse in Staten #### Island and i paid $325k for said semi attached house with mini backyard.

MC... when do you hear the results?

Is it really an 8 year wait list?
No. What he is referring to is thatnit has been 8 years since they last gave the exam.

I have heard from 2 sanitation workers that they will be hiring in about 1-2 years. There are a lot of retirements happeningbthis year which is why they are opening the books.

I have some paperwork to send in to get my score in a few weeks. Otherwise, I can just wait til they call me for the physical exam in a few months. Im not going to send away for my score because I know its high and will be called for the physical.

Geez. If it were an 8 year wait I would be 39 and definitely wouldnt be hired.

I see your post about a family of 4. I was talking about individual
Look up average apartment prices and get back to me.
Why am I only looking in Manhattan?
That's all I've been talking about. Way out far in brooklyn and Queens or SI or Bronx... I'm sure there's housing where 50k works.

Well that be middle class? Dunno, but I doubt it.
In my opinion that is firmly middle class unless you are a complete idiot at managing money.

Holy crap... good luck, MC!

But that article also mentioned 33k starting salary and 50s or 60s after a bunch of years (5?). That doesn't match the numbers in the urban myth I've been carrying around

Thats base salary. Sanitation puts in a lot of mandatory overtime.

I've never been paid a penny for overtime. Sucks.

I've been doing consulting hourly, just for that. And taxes.

Heres what grinds my gears.

We were scheduled for 9am. I arrived at 830. Little less than a third of the 1500 people arrived early or on time.

They made us wait in the auditorium til ten while people trickled in for an hour.

I understand a 15-20 minute grace period but if people are nearly an hour late they should be disqualified.

By the time we started all the early guys have to take a test after now being uncomfortable, aggravated and tired from waiting for the tardy people.

I just dont think that is fair. Total BS.
Sounds like the kind of guy I'd want to hire. Complaining before you even get the job.

It wouldnt bother you that they werent enfircing the rules?

The exam is part of a job interview process. Would you hire someone who waltzed in an hour late for his/her interview?

"In 2007, about 32,000 took the test, and about 29,000 passed. Hiring depends on the needs of the department, but we could hire about 500 per year," says a spokesperson. "We are approaching list number 6,000 from the current list."

The real depressing part is that 3k people actually failed a test that a ten year old should have no problem with

What rule exactly? If that many people were "late", perhaps they know more about the process than you do. And lol at being tired because you had to sit around and do nothing for an hour.

20+ years ago I was a white collar union employee in Phila.

Even if you aced it, aren't you behind the veterans(or are you a veteran)?

Don't know your race, but do they still give extra affirmative action points for minorities?

And even if you have the top score, somebody with an "in" might have an identical score.

Sitting for an hour and a half in silence with a bunch of strangers would make anyone tited and bored.
