Obama speech seems to support reparations (1 Viewer)

"I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged," the Democratic presidential hopeful said.

"I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it's Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds."
Let me be clear: I hate the fact that we had slavery. I hate whatever was done in the past to anyone based on their color, heritage, etc. However...I think that his posture on the world scene is one, frankly, of dissing the U.S. and throwing us under the bus. Is he looking for us to be France, part deux?

Well, I wonder what he means by deeds. If by deeds, he means boatloads of cash, then I disagree with him.

He's angered militant blacks by being against reparations, so what I think he's saying here is we all need to say we're sorry.

I'm sorry.

LOL at this thread's title...since when does "deeds" = "reparations"

this forum needs to get rid of the hacks

Well, let me see.We attempted to help freed slaves start their own country. We fought a war where more than 600,000 people were killed and another 400,000 were wounded. We amended the Constitution. We enacted legislation against discrimination based upon race. We enacted legislation that discriminates in favor of racial minorities. What's left?

Maybe not.But...what the H did he just say in the quote? Kind of hard to take it another way since it is a direct quote.

And...come, on, now. This quote that you linked is from 4 years ago. This is Mr. "Change". He could have had 17 different positions since then.
You wanna bet on this one? I'll go with NO on reparations. You should edit the title of this thread.

Mr. Obama, speaking on Sunday in Chicago at the Unity ’08 Convention, a gathering of minority journalists, said he was disappointed in Mr. McCain’s position on the affirmative action measure. Mr. Obama mixed foreign policy analysis with his views on immigration and whether the United States should offer reparations and apologize for slavery and its treatment of American Indians.

“There’s no doubt that when it comes to our treatment of Native Americans as well as other persons of color in this country,” Mr. Obama said, “we’ve got some very sad and difficult things to account for.”

“The best reparations we can provide,” he said, “are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed.”

I think every living slave should be given tax exempt status.

Word. Maybe we should roll back the civil rights movement - perhaps we've done too much.

Money, of course! Pay attention!

I'm not quite sure why you think that helps your argument.

Which, reminds me. I'm not quite sure why I'm engaging these silly political threads again. Maybe you should change the title to: Obama: Best Reparations = Good Schools and Inner City Jobs.

I'll leave you to your own devices.

He said BOTH things. "The best reparations...being good schools" seems to me to be political evasion and not directly clarifying things.

Will you cry when Obama is inevitably elected this winter?
I'd guess that weeping for the future of our country would qualify.

Hmmm my heritage might get me some bucks from this program. As long as he doesn't tax us repressed people I for this

40 acres and a mule?

Every time I start getting comfortable with the thought of a President Obama he goes and says something along these lines.

And every time I think you might be a rational person, you post something like this.Even if monetary reparations was the strongest issue Barack Obama personally supported, does anyone think he's dumb enough to actual state that? And does anyone really think he actually even believes that?

you've gotten comfortable with the idea?
With the General Election and the move to the middle he is talking and seeming more sane and I have hope he will not be a raving flaming liberal of a President. Maybe it is just talk. For me, the fact is that he very well may be the next President. If he is indeed more to the middle than what I have thought and expected (from the little history we have of him) then he might not be that bad. For me, I just want the US to be better off. I do not care if the President has an R or a D next to his name. Perhaps I am just looking for the silver lining in a possible future of ours?

Are you saying he did not say this? If he did say this are you saying he just says things without really meaning it?

Said what? That reparations should be in the form of better inner city schools and jobs? How is that controversial?

How does the governement go about providing inner-city jobs? What about blacks that live in rural areas?

So if you are an African American... the government should provide better inner city jobs as a form of reparation for something that has been outlawed for well over a 100 years?

I don't think that's what Obama meant. I'm guessing he meant that the gov't should focus efforts on improving inner city education and creating programs to assist inner city workers in gaining the skills they need to compete in the workplace.

How is the federal government going to go about improving inner city education?
