Oculus Quest / VR et al (1 Viewer)

I just stood face to chest with Lord Vader. He pointed straight at me and I opened some cube.

This is next level stuff. Just incredible and they’ve just scratched the surface.

Played the ww1 flight sim…

Just incredible. This is the future of gaming, movies and media in general.

You search this site and I said it 10 years ago- it’s coming real soon - you’re gonna be able to watch Lebron live as if he was 5 ft in front of you very soon and you’ll pay PPV prices to make it happen. You can be ringside for Jake Paul and on the field standing next to Brady.

Its (almost) here.

I bought one a few months ago and said similar. Once they get to where it's a light pair of glasses instead of a large headset,  the sky is the limit.  Comfy glasses, maybe tracking gloves instead of controllers... yea.

The boxing game is fun as hell a a great workout. I just boxed for three rounds and then I needed a shower.

After I played for a few hours I was wondering if this was more like the Wii - just a short lived gimmick but the more I play the more potential I see.

There is still a place for a Xbox/ps5 because it’s nice to just sit on the couch and thumb away but I will not be playing any RPGs in 2D going forward. The immersion of the oculus is a game changer for those genres.

It’s also nice that the games are fairly cheap. The $10 I just dropped for boxing will do more for my cardio than the $3k treadmill my wife bought for herself. (I’d rather run outside than run on a device that the ground is moving below me)

The boxing is so much fun but I get so sweaty. Might have to pace myself and stop trying to knock these dudes out with every opening.

If you’re on the fence about buying one- don’t be.

Which boxing? I have Thrill of the Fight and it's awesome. Get a pretty good workout out of it. So much fun.

I'm sure that's the one.   It's fun and pretty realistic and the price is *chef's kiss*, but it's about 3 or 4 on my list of go-to boxing workouts.  The sweat all over the device sucks and movement is kind of limited even if you have the space.  You def get your money's worth though.

Yep, that’s the one. Moving up the ranks!

What other boxing games are there?

Do any of you have this weird sensation latter you’ve been playing for a long time and takeoff the headset- like you’re stepping out from one matrix to the other, real matrix/reality?

I will try and take more notice the next time it happens. I first noticed it when I went to my phone afterwards to text a buddy about how great this was. I’m sure it’s just your brain readjusting but it’s an surreal feeling. Not bad, just….odd.

I know there's a Creed boxing game but haven't tried it.

I also enjoy Drunken Bar Fight. Not boxing but you basically beat the crap out out people with whatever you can get your hands on (pool cues, beer bottles, gumball machines...) It's fun.  :bag:

Gorn is good for some good smash em up fun.  Pretty cathartic when in a bad mood.

Im about to fire up Arizona Sunshine.  Zombie shooter that was on sale.

Swarm is still by far the best game I've played.  Can't believe how I can fly around and change directions everywhere and not get motion sickness at all.

Lol yeah that one is kinda fun.

Beat saber is much, much more fun after I DL’d the Greenday songs. So ouch better and more into rhythm when I actually know the song.

Gorn is OK.

The blade and sorcery or whatever it’s called is fun but lonely. It would be truly amazing if it had pvp or co-op. Maybe it’s coming.

I made a video to show my buddy whom I’m trying to persuade to get an oculus. We share some pretty dark humor so he got a kick out of all the things I was able to pretend doing to a corpse. All NSFW.

Using a severed leg to soccer kick a severed head was one of the funnier things I never thought in would ever do or type.

So in one of the most ironic twists - my kids wanted to get Eleven - the Table Tennis game.

And, in fairness, its a pretty fun game to play - pretty realistic physics.

But the ironic part is we had to fold up our actual ping-pong table to create the play area we use for the Oculus ...

I feel like this post requires both 😃  and 😢 emojis.

Supposedly they are working on a way where you don't have to use a Facebook/Meta account.

Originally got this for my daughters but they view it more as a novelty; they'll goof around if friends are over but other than that will leave it alone.

I use it almost every day :bag:
Boxing is pretty good exercise
Love Beatsaber/Synthriders
Drunken Bar Fight :bag:
Vader Immortal is pretty awesome
The Climb 2 is tense
Drop dead fun mindless zombies

On a side note, my father-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson's and one of the things they wanted him to do was have boxing lessons. To do that meant traveling 40 minutes each way and it was also fairly expensive. I him an Oculus Quest 2 and he uses the boxing on there with his physical therapist helping -- they love it and are looking into using it with other people. Pretty cool

Got this for Christmas - bought the Myst game, among others.  If you enjoyed Myst, the immersion in VR is incredible.
Intrigued Myst fan here. Same puzzles or new?

(Can't believe I still remember a few solutions after 20ish years!)

Same - but its been so long since I have played, they felt new, with just a hint of familiarity.

There was a "randomized" option for the puzzles - so that could be an option for you, if you think you recall too many.

get off my lawn.... i would have bought one of these already if not for the facebook thing......

/ sure it makes no sense but that is my rant

I’m with you but again- it’s literally no different than registering for any other website you would have to if they were owned by another company.

If you have a good PC you can buy the ones made by several other manufacturers.

so side question - with regards to Facebook - if I do sign up - does it create a page?

As steady pointed out - sure I have an EA account because I had to but I don't have some random "page" created

Looks like Eduardo Corrochio may be joining

Do most of you not use a PC? (as in you use the Quest stand alone?)

ALL RIGHT - I'll read through the thread again (Im familiar with the quest but need to reread) but I'll ask again

Is 128 ok - do I really need the 256?

Do I need the "special strap" and/or battery?  Guessing not

TIA

No, you don't need any of the accessories. We bought the standard package and went with 256, it has been fine. Pretty easy set up and it works well. When my kid plays for extended periods, he gets "raccoon eyes" from the pressure of the headset, but it is comfortable enough.

I even bought the cable to hook to a PC, but we haven't even used it yet because his laptop doesn't have a USB-C port. Probably get him a new laptop for his birthday in April, so he can try the other platforms that offer games, but the Occulus store has a lot of good ones to keep us busy until then.

The 128 and 256 only refer to the hard drive space. Both have the same performance.

As of now most games do not take up much space and you would be perfectly suited to just get the 128 and maybe in a year or two when some of the bigger games come out you may need to delete some games or apps to allow space for the bigger titles.

How much space do you need to play?  I keep seeing all these videos of people breaking their stuff or getting hurt.  When do we get to the full on gaming rig/treadmill/suit thing from Ready Player One?

Those people are morons. Some games you can sit down, most require about 6x6 area but larger the better.

It’s basically a Xbox controller that’s been spit in half and instead of a flat screen you have goggles on and can see in 360 degrees. You would move around in the game world exactly like you would in a game like Skyrim or the Witcher. Use your thumb stick to move, only only real difference is just that you use your headset to look around.

Got mine last Christmas. Believe it's only 64Gb and haven't had any issues so far.

Bought the twist adjustable strap right away and never looked back. Recently purchased silicone "halos" to go around the controllers because we have all been guilty of clanking them together. Also bought some nice silicone, velcro strapped grips. Big improvement there.

The one thing I bought and sent back was a stand. Didn't seem worth it.

The unit also has you setup a virtual box to help keep you in your shoes. Doesn't mean you can't swing for the fences and take Nanna out but does provide a visual "YOU'RE TOO CLOSE TO THE CLIFF" type reminder. You can also just look down and see the ground, it's not like its a total blackout.

My wife got a Meta Quest 2 from work to test out. I played the fishing game for a bit; it was amusing.
I want the light saber music game but don't really feel like paying for something I might only goof around with for 30 minutes.

A. There's a Beat Saber demo.  Try it out.

B. The return policy is pretty chill.  Instant return on games used under 2 hours in the first 2 weeks of ownership.
