Smells like chicken
Well another year another playoff loss.

This time to a clearly superior team. That 3rd quarter was the worst quarter of football I have ever seen a team play.

Hopefully with Merriman,LT and Gates 100% coming into the 2009 campaign we can make another strong playoff run.

Areas of concern:

Ron Rivera, interviewing with the Detroit Lions today, I dont want a 3rd person calling defensive plays within a 2 year span, not good.

Clary and Goff. This side of the Oline needs upgrades at both spots

Jamal is a year older

Luis C and Igor are just space takers and never and I mean never make a play.

Merriman/Philips should be fine but the ILB's need a complete overhaul

Saftey needs an upgrade, I'll settle with weddle for now, looked great against Indy, eh against Pitt

Franchise Sproles.

Set at WR and TE.

Special teams look fine

In. Painful second half yesterday, but I'm happy with the way they played down the stretch of the regular season. Somehow, someway, they have to find a way to pressure the QB next year. And for the love of Pete, tackle somebody! I like their chances to be better than .500. I'll be in the stands when they play the Giants in the new stadium.

Looking forward to all the news and notes in this thread from the locals.

2009 opponents:

San Diego Chargers

Home: Denver, Kansas City, Oakland, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Miami, Philadelphia, Washington

Away: Denver, Kansas City, Oakland, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Dallas, N.Y. Giants

Catch a break with no Indy or NE on the schedule, but 4 trips east and the NFC East division is no cake walk.

Some short thoughts:

- Re-sign Igor if he's not in demand and the price is reasonable. He's not a playmaker, but he's big, strong, and is good enough against the run.

- Use #16 overall pick on best player available from one of the following positions: Safety, RG, RT, DT, ILB.

- Draft another productive RB using a 3rd or 4th round pick.

- Bring in an impact FA at S, RG, RT, or ILB.

- Do NOT franchise Sproles. Re-sign him if competing offers are reasonable, but do not pay him Top 5 RB $.

- Give the Spanos' the land in Mission Valley!

Chris Chambers is a free agent after the 2009 season. What's the chances that the Chargers cut him in the offseason and save some money. He was pretty useless after like week 4.

WOW...SNIFFA IS ALIVE.....(He won't field any of my calls, dont know if its heartbreak cuz of the UnChargers or if its cuz I'm in his biggest fantasy league and I'm champ)

Either way....Chargers have to do a lot to get any further then they have....how many times are we gonna hear LT, Gates will be 100% next year....UM, I heard that before.....

Injuries are now a plague for LT and Gates....Toes and Knees, toes and knees!!!

Chargers have been that team that has always got in, just cant do anything when they get there!

Plus Rivers is not that guy who will lead a team to a Superbowl, not a big game QB

The new stadium does not open until the 2010 season.

The list of guys who are not big-game QBs that have won Super Bowls is pretty long, and Rivers is better than most of them - Eli included.

Would you give him top 5 for the year, if you believed you could get a longer extension done afterwards. Say 4y/22m in total?
Probably not. Counting the franchise year, that almost Michael Turner money. But I could be wrong; I'm not nearly as high on Sproles as Maurile and some other Charger homers. :bag:

Oh, we'll then chaulk me up for the smelly old meadowlands.

Antonio Cromartie revealed Monday he played this season with a fracture in his hip. A Pro Bowl cornerback only a year ago, Cromartie said the injury, which he suffered in the second quarter of the season opener, should heal with rest and he expects to return to form.

“Hell yeah,” Cromartie said when asked if he was looking forward to the offseason. “It came (too) soon, but I'm definitely looking forward to it – mostly to get my body back in shape, get back healthy and be able to play like I'm supposed to play.”

Wow

Wonder how much this hindered him, I herd Donnie Avery of the Rams played with something similar.

I cant imagine playing with a fractured hip. Geez

That helps explain why he looked awful against Marshall in week 2.

coaches let go:

The Chargers announced Tuesday that four assistant coaches from the 2008 squad will not return to the team next season.

Secondary coach Bill Bradley and tight end coach Clancy Barone, both of whom just completed their second seasons with the Bolts, were released from their contracts.

In addition, the contracts for offensive line coach Jack Henry and assistant secondary/quality control coach Kevin Ross are due to expire in February and both men will not return in 2009.

Henry, a veteran of 15 NFL seasons, joined the Chargers in 2006 and was also with the club in 1996. Ross played cornerback for the Bolts in 1996 and worked with Chargers defensive backs in 2007 and ’08.

“We appreciate the contributions and hard work of these four men and wish them only the best in their future endeavors,” Head Coach Norv Turner said.

They should fire Kevin Ross twice! Seriously though, they are going to need more pressure on the QB or the secondary will always stink.

that should be changed by Merriman coming back and a 100% Cro next year. Im not sure why the defense cant get off the field on 3rd down though been a problem since Marty was here.

Actually they had gotten much better at that under Rivera until Sunday. When Jammer went down with the leg problems in the third quarter Roethlisberger absolutely chewed up whoever was out there. Every single third and long pickup they got was on the side that Jammer usually plays. Excellent in game adjustment by the Steelers there.ETA: I can't believe I'm stating the importance of Quentin Jammer to this defense - but there it is.

C'mon Groovus, I know you've watched enough Charger games to know that Jammer is a much better player than he's given credit for. If he'd have been taken with the 25th pick in the 1st round instead of 5th overall, he'd be loved.

The point I was making was that as early as two years ago I was a huge critic of Jammer but the last two seasons he's really stepped things up and was probably the best defensive player on the team this year. I just found it funny that I'm the guy pointing out how important Jammer is to the Charger D this time.

well Jammer is better than Cletius

It's weird to consider that the starting tailback might not be on the roster right now. I think if LaDainian doesn't restructure he'll be gone (which will make me :lmao: ), and it seems pretty clear that A.J. isn't going to pay Sproles what he'll be able to get on the market from some other teams. I think the Chargers have higher priorities than paying a ton of money to tailbacks now, and if you look at the teams who've won superbowls recently, much of the time they're not teams who have a top tier feature back. It's going to be a very interesting off season.

My hope is that LaDainian restructures and stays with the team. He deserves at least one more year to see if he can be a top back again.

I see no reason why LT wouldn't restructure, except that he feels betrayed by AJ. I believe getting rid of LT would be horrible for morale and send a terrible message to the rest of the team. LT put the Chargers on the map and did everything he could for the team - even staying in SD when he could have signed anywhere else as a free agent. They need to give LT another year since you don't give up on the face of the organization simply because he's been plagued with nagging injuries. If it happens again in 2009 then I understand cutting/trading him, but it's ridiculous to do it after one off year in which he played injured. While I don't think he'll be the #1 fantasy back again I think he's easily in the top 10, if not the top 5.

Good News / Bad News - Mark Fabiani on XX 1090 AM This Morning

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good News

Scott and BR asked Fabiani point blank if the Chargers would be using their trigger clause to get out of their agreement with the City of San Diego in 10 days. He stated that they would continue exploring options in the San Diego region and would not be paying out the $56M to open up the possibility of relocating.

He also said that the Sunrise Power Link's approval opens up the Duke Power Plant land near the Bay for a possible stadium. He also mentioned the spot where the Gaylord Hotel deal just fell through (right next to it) as another very positive development. He said that the current City Council and attorney are committed to helping the team get something done in San Diego.

Bad News

He said that the Los Angeles stadium deal is very likely to work and that Dean Spanos and Ed Roski are friends. He said that although many initiatives in the area have failed, this one would likely go through and should be taken VERY seriously (whatever that means).

However on the potential of the Roski deal, I found this in the LA Times:

"Since both the Raiders and the Rams left the region after the 1994 season, communities across the Southland have tried to rally support for NFL stadiums within their boundaries, to little avail. Anaheim and Carson considered but ultimately abandoned the idea of building stadiums. Pasadena's Rose Bowl and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum both were ultimately rejected as potential sites, either because they were civically unpopular (Pasadena) or structurally unsuitable (the Coliseum).

Even if Roski is successful at obtaining the necessary civic support within Industry, there are still significant obstacles to his bid. It remains to be seen whether the NFL would sanction moving a team to Industry.

The city of Los Angeles continues to actively lobby for bringing a team to a stadium within its own boundaries"

He also said, that unless the team sees SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS on their efforts in San Diego, the team would likley have a very different position when their buyout/relocation option comes on the table again in February of 2010 -- with a smaller price tag I might add.

My overall takeaway was that things are aligning for them to get a stadium here in San Diego, but that the Spanos family is getting frustrated and time is quickly running out. The next 12 months will be very telling for the future of the team in San Diego.

AJ talking to Rivers already about an extension:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Ch...?urn=nfl,135802

As the LaDainian Tomlinson situation percolates, another key component to the Chargers' offseason and salary cap machinations is about to commence.

General Manager A.J. Smith confirmed Tuesday that the team soon will begin negotiations with quarterback Philip Rivers on a long-term contract.

"You offer a contract and hope for the best," Smith said while watching a Senior Bowl practice. "We'll have a contract (offer) and hope it's successful. If not, we have the franchise (tag)."

This is not a surprise, but it is certainly significant.

The roots of Tomlinson's possible departure are based in the large chunk of salary cap he would currently take up, as the team has several key players whose contracts expire in the next two years.

"We have a lot we need to do," Smith said.

Chief among those tasks is signing the quarterback who this season became the center of the offense and next season will play the final year of his current contract.

Rivers has for a couple of years been lauded as a leader and emerging star. In 2008, he grew into his potential on the field, throwing for 4,009 yards and a team-record 34 touchdowns. His 105.5 passer rating was also a team record.

The Chargers are 33-15 and have gone to the playoffs all three seasons with Rivers as the starting quarterback. Rivers' passer rating and touchdown-to-interception ratio are better than those of Tom Brady, John Elway, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana or Steve Young in their first 48 NFL starts

I see Mel Kiper has the team taking a RB in the first round. Any chance that's accurate? Given the success of later round RBs, i really hope that doesn't happen.

Sproles is a FA.Tomlinson has a detatched/torn ligamnet in his groin. There is at least a chance that it could be a round 1 RB.They have no second round pick. And Michael Bennet isnt the answer.A ton of things have to be sorted out between now an April.
I forgot they didn't have a second rounder. I agree there are a lot of questions to clear up in the next few months. Makes me nervous.ETA - Nice pic Choke!

they will have 2 third rounders one should be comp pick for losing Turner. Go best D player in round 1, grab a RB in round 3. Personally I'd just keep LT & sproles

Move to LA coming> Chargers starting to heavily market in LA/OC

http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl...,7182676.column

The Chargers, whose stadium arrangement in San Diego makes them the team best positioned to move here, have hired an L.A. marketing firm. Of course, it could all be just another tease.

Sam Farmer

January 27, 2009

Reporting from Tampa, Fla. -- The NFL is willing to consider a return to its Los Angeles roots.

Evidently, so are the San Diego Chargers.

While the league is kicking around the notion of playing the 50th Super Bowl in L.A. -- where the first one took place -- the onetime L.A. Chargers appear to be inching closer to a possible return to their birthplace.

As is always the case with the on-again, off-again saga of the NFL's flirtation with the nation's second-largest market, nothing is written in stone. In fact, it's more like murky skywriting, completely at the mercy of the fickle winds of change.

But more smoke signals came Monday when the Chargers signed a deal with Los Angeles-based Wasserman Media Group to market the franchise in L.A. and Orange County, a development that surely will be viewed by some as greasing the skids for a move north. There hasn't been a team in the L.A. area since the Raiders and Rams left after the 1994 season.

"The bottom line is Los Angeles and Orange County are two of the most lucrative markets in the world," said Mark Fabiani, the team's point man on stadium issues. "There's no NFL team in those markets, and there's no reason the Chargers can't pursue those areas in these difficult economic times."

Possible motivations aside, this much is clear: The Chargers, who have been working on a San Diego stadium solution for seven years and so far have been unsuccessful, are better positioned to move than any other NFL team.

Beginning on Super Bowl Sunday -- of all days -- the Chargers will have a three-month window in which to relocate. And, under the team's current lease terms with the city of San Diego, that window will reopen every year from this point forward. The city cannot sue the Chargers or the NFL to block a move, provided it is paid a $56-million lease-termination fee that will decrease over time.

"We're definitely a lot closer to the end of this process than the beginning," said Fabiani, adding that the club has spent $10 million to fully explore stadium options around San Diego County, most recently two sites in Chula Vista. "This is not a process that can go on forever."

At stake for the Chargers is the head start they have over other NFL franchises that also are likely to be mulling relocation. The Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings, for instance, are bound to their cities through the 2011 season.

The issue in L.A. has always been, where would a relocated team play?

The latest option is Ed Roski's proposed stadium in Industry, which should have all of its approvals in place by this spring and then will receive the go-ahead from the NFL to formally approach potential tenants.

Roski wants to own part of an NFL team. That means he would have to get out of the gaming business -- he owns the Silverton hotel-casino in Las Vegas -- and restructure his offer to pay cash (and not simply trade development rights) for the piece of a franchise. That won't come cheap, considering the average valuation of an NFL club is now $1 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

Even though NFL owners are holding their annual March meetings in Laguna Beach -- the first time in a decade those have taken place anywhere in the vicinity of L.A. -- the Roski proposal is not on the agenda.

What could be informally discussed, however, is the concept of L.A.'s playing host to Super Bowl L, the 50th edition of the game. That was first proposed by Casey Wasserman, chairman of the marketing company working with the Chargers, and Tim Leiweke, president of AEG, which owns Staples Center.

The idea is that the Super Bowl in 2016 would return to its roots; the first one was played at the L.A. Coliseum on Jan. 15, 1967. The 2016 game -- along with the Pro Bowl that precedes it by a week -- could be played at the Coliseum, Rose Bowl or a third stadium, if one is built by then.

The concept is novel because a Super Bowl has never been hosted by a non-NFL city. (That includes Super Bowl XIX, which, although it was played at Stanford Stadium, was hosted by San Francisco.) At least one owner, Jim Irsay of the Indianapolis Colts, has made it clear he would support such a return to L.A.

"There's no doubt in my mind that if somebody were to say, 'We're going to go out and get this thing,' they'd have a helluva chance," Irsay said in November. "They'd have my vote, I'll tell you that."

Were the process a simple one, it might be a slam dunk for L.A. But the competition for Super Bowls is fierce, and Irsay might have been feeling especially magnanimous because, A) he has lots of ties to L.A., including a membership at Riviera Country Club, and B) his city has already been awarded a Super Bowl for its new stadium.

When asked about the possibility of another L.A. Super Bowl -- the Southland has played host to seven -- Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney said that he would be willing to listen but that "everybody wants a Super Bowl." The Steelers, who play at an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather city, have never hosted one.

Bryan Glazer, whose family owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said Monday that he too would like to hear an L.A. Super Bowl proposal but declined to say whether he is in favor of the concept.

"I would be open-minded," he said. "We have to see the situation in L.A. at the time, the potential for solving the situation there. . . . I think it's more important to have a team in L.A., whether it's the 49th or the 53rd Super Bowl. That's the bigger issue

I will gladly chauffeur any of the Chargers (except Buster Davis) around in their Bentleys for minimum wage. :goodposting:

city drops lawsuit vs. the chargers:

http://www.chargers.com/news/headlines/cit...ses-lawsuit.htm

The suit brought by the City of San Diego against the Chargers has been dismissed. The lawsuit alleged the Chargers owed the City more than $170,000 for use of Qualcomm Stadium back in 2004.

San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said in an email statement: “I thank the City and the Chargers for this agreement. Litigation is expensive and often unnecessary. We want to resolve matters before litigation, if at all possible. I’m hopeful that the financial analysts can resolve these accounting issues.”

The team’s lease with the City calls for issues between the two parties to be decided in arbitration, and not in a lawsuit. The city nonetheless filed the lawsuit, which has now been dismissed.

City of San Diego spokeswoman Gina Coburn said in an e-mail that the city and team have "agreed to bring their financial analysts together to work out several accounting disputes that have gone unresolved during the past four years."

The Chargers attempted during 2007 to resolve these outstanding issues with the city, including by providing background documents and materials to city officials, but the pressing nature of the city's financial problems and a change in management personnel at Qualcomm Stadium prevented any progress at that time

Bicycle SS, I'm counting on you to deliver the breaking news of Sproles and LT here as it happens during the combine. Let's hope they can get it done in the next few days.

some guy named Forney is probably the starting RG next year, I assume they let Goff walk after signing this guy

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3933679

After signing with the Chargers last year and not playing a game, Kynan Forney agreed Wednesday to a two-year, $4.8 million contract that will pay him $2 million in the 2009 season, according to a source.

With guard Mike Goff headed into restricted free agency, Forney might be given a chance to start at guard.

The 30-year-old Forney had 89 starts in seven seasons with the Falcons.

The 6-foot-3, 302 pound athletic guard works well in a zone blocking scheme

I forgot where I read it now, but I heard the Chargers plan on selecting a RT and a RG within their first three picks, if possible. Of course, that could all be smokescreen, but it's not a bad decision.

They wanted to take one with their first pick last year, AJ basically came out and said, but I believe like 7 or 8 Tackles had come off the board and he didnt want to reach. If his top couple guys are gone I doubt he reaches. The Bolts have lots of directions at #16, it will be BPA (sans QB,WR,TE,DB,C).I have my money on Rey Manuluauaulauagaa.

Floyd and Gordon given RFA tenders:

Moving to keep Floyd, Gordon

By Kevin Acee

Posted: 3:56 p.m. Wednesday February 25, 2009

The Chargers have made moves to retain both of their restricted free agents -- giving receiver Malcom Floyd and cornerback Cletis Gordon second-round tenders.

That means both players will make $1.45 million in 2009 if they don't sign with another team.

If another team did sign either player it would owe the Chargers a second-round pick in this year's draft.

They wanted to take one with their first pick last year, AJ basically came out and said, but I believe like 7 or 8 Tackles had come off the board and he didnt want to reach. If his top couple guys are gone I doubt he reaches. The Bolts have lots of directions at #16, it will be BPA (sans QB,WR,TE,DB,C).I have my money on Rey Manuluauaulauagaa.
yeah you wouldnt want to reach on BUSTer Davis, Eric Weddle or Jacob Hester
Eric Weddle is doing fine. Perhaps he could have been had in the thrid round, but overall I am fine with him at safety, I don''t consider him a bad pick at all. Hester was a reach I agree, but he can still have a productive career. Buster Davis was a miss barring a 180 this year, but that is why the went out later that year and traded for Chambers, AJ saw his airball and did something about it. Not every pick is a Merriman, especially when you are picking late, but AJs body of work has been great. I also agree with him on tagging Sproles. I was happy with that move.

If the Broncos don't take him.
I will be mad if those Donks snatch him up ctsu. Is that the feeling in Denver by the way? I am quite certain Denver needs all the D help they can get, I would think D line though?

A.J. Smith is supposed to give a press conference at noon today with some intimation that many important questions will be answered.
