*** OFFICAL 2009 San Diego Super Chargers Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

The Browns are in a season of milestones, and a pretty big one is just up ahead for them. If Brady Quinn can pass for 88 yards, he will shatter the 1000 yards passing mark on the season. Jamal Lewis just shattered the 500 yards rushing mark on the season with his herculean effort in the Bengals game, running for 40 yards en route to retirement. Star WR Mohamed Massaquoi needs just 15 yards receiving to eclipse the 500 yard mark as well. Massaquoi also has a receiving TD to put the exclamation point on his rookie campaign. They've done all this without unleashing Brian Robiskie.

One story that's been totally glossed over is what's going on with Merriman. Is he done?

Did the roids take their toll on his connective tissue that quickly, or was his previous dominance strictly a drug enhanced thing?

I'm also thinking he came back too early after surgery, has been overcompensating for the knee which has led to other injuries.

I'm wondering what kind of contract he'll get next year - it'd be stupid to pay him top LB money at this point.

On the other side, what a game Phillips had!

I don't really think it's been glossed over. After the suspension and before the knee injury Merriman was the same All-Pro. If you ask me he's never looked the same after the knee injury and I completely agree with you he's probably made the situation worse by trying to come back too soon. He used to blow up any blocker one on one and I've even seen him blocked by a WR on a run play this year. He's not the same guy.One of the best moves AJ has made in the past few years is the decision NOT to lock Merriman up to a long-term deal with a huge signing bonus. I'm extremely happy Rivers is the one with that big contract instead of Merriman but I hope Merriman bounces back and is productive somewhere. Seau was never the same after he left SD either but he was still a very productive part of a great team. There's always the chance Merriman will pull a Tomlinson and accept less $ based on lower performance but my hunch is some NFL team is still willing to give Merriman too much $. Thankfully, I doubt that guy is AJ and you could kind of see that when they drafted English.

I think the chances of Merriman being in a Charger uni next year are close to zero (unless he's willing to take less money than other teams will probably offer him). I'd like to see English doing better than he has so far to feel better about this - English hasn't exactly lit it up. I know, he's a rookie, but still.

Season is going to come down to the defense. I don't see Rivers being held under 24 pts the rest of the way. Hopefully Weddle comes back healthy and rested for the stretch run. Maybe the extended PT Oliver is getting will pay dividends down the road. Perhaps I'm just an optimistic homer, but I thought Merriman showed flashes earlier this year and I'm hopeful we'll see him back doing damage in the playoffs.

your not being a homer, he played really well vs. Philly n NYG. I think he could of played this past week but the smart move was to sit everyone and wait for the Dallas game

Rivers makes the dumbest throw he's made in months and the defense gets him off the hook.

Pass defense was outstanding today, and the run D got slashed but stiffened in the red zone. The goal line stand was the most important momentum swing in the game.

I think this team beats Cincy at home next week and clinches the 2 seed. Then it's all about getting Weddle, Hardwick, and Merriman healthy for the playoffs.

The Colts may be 13-0, but they certainly don't look unbeatable. Especially their secondary.

All I can say is WOW, what a goal line stand! I'd like to think Siler is emerging as the solution at the other ILB spot.

Seemed like the Cowboy D never really stopped the Charger offense either - the Chargers stopped themselves a few times though. I can't believe the D held the Cowboys to 17 with a makeshift D line (I don't even know what string to call some of these guys) and no Weddle. Great job yesterday.

What was Scifers upset about on that one punt that went into the endzone - he was really cussing somebody out. I figure it might have been Osgood - and it was funny how Osgood responded the next two punts he downed by showing Scifers the ball, holding it over his head for like 2 minutes after he caught it.

nice goal line stand. HORRIBLE play calling.you may have just put the final nail in ole wade's coffin.

Yeah, I kept waiting for play action to Witten. They learned their lesson too late when they made the adjustment with the throw to Austin in the 2nd half.Still I can't blame Wade too much. They had just run right through that defense for about 80 yards - you'd figure you could get 1 more on them given 4 shots. Great stand by that defense - GREAT.

WOo!

lets take care of business and beat the Bengals this week, I think that will all but lock up #2 seed in the AFC. Although NE would still be 2 behind with 2 to play (if they win) so might still need 1 more after that.

I always label myself a Cowboy fan and Charger sympathizer. Living in Penasquitos during the Ross era Super Bowl run was a great great time, and for America's finest city, I always cheer on SD above all but Dallas. Yesterday was bittersweet. I am very very impressed with what I see right now. Pushed to pick a Super Bowl team from the AFC, I'd take the Chargers. I've also always loved Norv for what he did in Dallas, but the igredients for that recipe haven't existed at any of his other stops. He had the best OL possibly in NFL history in the early 90s and built an offense around that. Watching him call plays yesterday was outstanding. He now has perhaps the best deep arm in the league and some giant WRs stretching the field and making good DBs look bad. Good for him for exploiting his strengths. Great philosophical adjustment for old Norv.

Good luck guys and congrats.

Rivers v Brees in the big dance would be fun for the whole family.

I'm already ready to go down to the Q for the tailgate and it's only Monday. This is going to be a long week. Gonna feel like a playoff game this weekend. The defense was tremendous yesterday, and Weddle said he playing for sure this weekend so that should help. Still 1000 seats left, so those locals who have the means to go, grab some tickets, call it an early xmas present for yourself.

San Diego is the one team the Indianapolis Colts do not want to see. Turner has won 3 playoff games in 2 years as HC, how many other teams/coaches can say that? Not very many.

And they have beaten the Colts in 2007 28-24 in Indy I might add as they stormed the post season on the road and went to the AFC Champ(like you guys don't know), then last year they sent Mr Dungy packing forever as they beat them at home.

2-0 vs the Colts the last 2 years in the playoffs...they have to be a decent darkhorse to come out of the AFC. It's either going to be San Diego or Indy IMHO.

They need to take care of business Sunday before anyone starts thinking about the Colts. The Bengals D is pretty banged up right now, and hopefully the Chargers can get Weddle and a DL or two back for this one. Maybe Hardwick will even play. It'd be great for the Chargers to actually be getting healthy to finish the season, as it's been the opposite the last 3 years or so.The team I'd like the Chargers to get a shot at more than any other in the postseason - the Pats. It'd be great to finally get that monkey off their backs.

If the Chargers beat the Bengals, they will effectively lock up the #2 seed. There would still be a mathematical possibility for the Patriots or Broncos or Bengals to get it -- but those possibilities are all extremely remote.

As a Charger fan, I'm very glad that the Steelers are (all but) out. I'd much rather face the Colts than the Steelers.

agreed all around. I'm pleasantly surprised by the play of the defense but the ten yard runs continue to be a worry. Of course with no steelers team it is less of a concern. Also the run game is better, but I don't think there will be any team that will be thinkinng run first while defending SD in the playoffs. Protection for Rivers will be the key.

Beating them would be great -- but I'm not sure I could handle losing to them again.
 I'd definitely be on suicide watch if we lost to the Pats again in the playoffs.
In my opinion that 2006 season playoff game against pats was the worst lost in chargers history, super bowl and championship games includedPats have taken out both my teams when it counts....I hate them above all elseThis year the patsys d woud have no answer for the charger passing game...still would rather not see them

Boy this thread sure is boring when SD is just winning. LOL

But Ill take it!

First round bye coming up!

Probably a first round matchup with New England this year too. We owe that team badly.

Clutchness? Or lucky to win it after the Gates interception?
Watching Rivers bounce back..stay focused after 2 picks....clutchThat last pass to floyd with a corner blitz in his face...priceless...
:hifive: It was a good game all around. They made some mistakes but made plays and avoided stupid penalties when it counted against a good, motivated team. LT is showing a little more power these last few weeks too which is a good sign. The continued injuries to both lines is a worry for the playoffs but the backup backup center whose name escapes me played well on that last drive. I'm really looking forward to the playoffs this year. Let's just get there healthy!

Mruczkowski’s season appears to be finished

By Kevin Acee, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

Monday, December 21, 2009 at 2:21 a.m.

Scott Mruczkowski held up his hand, bowed his head and hid the tears.

Before looking up again, eyes red and swollen, he caught a sob somewhere between his throat and nose.

He’s been a savior at center, and now it appears his season might be over after rolling his ankle and hearing a pop on the third play of the Chargers’ game-winning drive yesterday.

“It (expletive) sucks,” Mruczkowski finally said.

Mruczkowski was blocking on what turned out to be a 20-yard pass to Vincent Jackson when he “got rolled up” on. He said he has never been hurt this badly.

“I won’t know exactly what’s wrong with it until tomorrow,” he said. “It didn’t look good, didn’t sound good.”

If there is good news for the Chargers, it is that they were already preparing to welcome Nick Hardwick back to practice in his latest attempt at a return to the lineup. A team source said Hardwick is expected to play Friday at Tennessee.

Hardwick hasn’t played since tearing ligaments in his ankle in the season opener. He hasn’t practiced in two weeks after suffering a setback in early December.

Dennis Norman, a nine-year veteran the Chargers signed in September after Hardwick went down, played the final two snaps from scrimmage in place of Mruczkowski....

Linebacker Shaun Phillips hit his chin on the turf and was briefly knocked out in the third quarter. He returned and played the rest of the game...

•Defensive end Jacques Cesaire left the game in the third quarter with an elbow injury and did not return. Cornerback Quentin Jammer suffered a bruised knee in the fourth quarter, returned and hit the knee on the ground and did not return. Jammer is expected to play Friday. The extent of Cesaire’s injury is not known.

That is what I was afraid of. I wouldn't be surprised if Cesaire is out too. The hit on his elbow looked nasty.

They could really use a win Friday so they could have basically 3 weeks to get people healthy. Should be a great game on xmas.

Tennessee is favored by 3 over San Diego Christmas night.

Factoring in the 3 points for home field advantage, Vegas is saying that these two teams are equal???

Maybe they expect them to rest starters, but I have no idea why that would be. They still need one win.

Yes, that is odd. Prompted me to put down a wager on the Chargers. :goodposting:

STOP CALLING FOR NORV'S HEAD!!
I want to understand this. 1) In the best of all possible worlds, would Norv be the head coach for your favorite team?

2) If not, if there were superior coaching talent available, wouldn't you want to upgrade?

3) Do you think there is superior coaching talent available?

To answer my own questions:

1) Hell no

2) Of course

3) Yes

Which leaves me with the unavoidable conclusion that someone better than Norv should be the HC for the Chargers after this season. unless they somehow win the super bowl

Gunz - your take on that?
Ah - the bold clears it up. My answer to your questions is yet to be determined, as the outcome of the 2009 season will strong influence how I feel about Norv.
Yes, if he goes 13-3 this year, it would be pretty stupid to fire him . . . unless he tries to hire his brother as defensive coordinator.
I didn't think 13-3 was super likely when I wrote that.
