***Offical Chicago Bears 2009 Offseason Thread*** (1 Viewer)

3rd and a 4th from Seattle for that pick. Oh well
I'm fine with this. We usually bomb with the earlier picks anyway. Sucks waiting all day for this, however. eta: The difference between 49 and 68 isn't that much

Given Angelo's relative success with 3rd+ round picks, I'm liking the Bears position. If they can get 2 keepers tommorow, I'll be happy.

With Robinski off the board I'm glad they snagged an extra pick. I wasn't sold on Massaquoi and he was the last WR taken.

I like guys like Jarett Dillard, Iglesias and Ramses Barden more than Massaquoi, and if they go WR they'll get one of these guys. Why not go Barden who is a lot like Marshall?

Same here, Barden is one of those high risk/reward types that GM's love to gamble on...wouldn't be surprised to see his name called tommorow. Dilliard also produced stud-like numbers, but his size is a problem. Check y'all tommorow!

:goodposting: I so called it that this is what the Bears were going to do. The Bears have done much better with their 3rd round and later picks than they have with the higher picks of late, so I am OK with it.

Dude.... seriously, at this point I would KILL for that kind of let down.
If this makes you feel any better, the Bears were going to pick Mitchell, Safety if the Raiders had not picked him up. That shows you how some picks are not really reaches. I know a few years back a lot of folks thought Devin Hester was a reach by the Bears. Then it came out that the Broncos were going to pick him up a few weeks later if the Bears had not taken him in the round they took him. Mel Kiper is not the know-it-all he comes across as. Just because he said Mitchell should not have been picked before the 5th round does not make that relevant. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....cago-bears.html

Bears were looking at all of the WR options, Jarius Bird and some unidentified pass rusher too (I wonder who that was.... Everett Brown maybe?). But with no ammo to trade up for any of them (remember both Denver and Carolina gave up their #1 pick next year to get players in late 1st or early 2nd rounds this year), trading down made most sense after the Bears lost out on all of their prospects.

My list of who I want with this first pick

1 Michael Johnson, DE

2 Derrick Williams, WR

3 Rashad Johnson, S

Would not be disappointed to seem them draft any of these guys:

Mike Wallace

Ramses Barden

Jarrett Dillard

The Bears can not afford to take anyone with questionable hands.

I know it's not a position of need, but Jared Cook still hasn't been taken. Field-stretcher.

I'd love to see Dillard with the first pick in the 4th.My wishlist for today:3.1 - Rashad Johnson3.2 - Ramses Barden4.1 - Jarrett Dillard4.2 - Mitch KingRest of Draft - BPA

Jarron Gilbert, DTUndersized DT. Typical for LovieUghh, I hate this trend

Lacks good strength. Does not show a powerful upper body. Plays too high at times and does not show a solid base. Appears to lack ideal mental toughness. Motor runs hot and cold. Not a tough, physical player.

Don't know much about him, but the guy looks like an athlete. 6' 5", 288 and fast. I've got no problem adding guys up front, especially since they could lose 3 next year.

I was really surprised they didn't go with Rashad Johnson at safety, a player that rates high, with many experts thinking he was a 2nd round pick, and probably our biggest area of need besides WR. I don't mind that they waited on receiver, as I think there are still a handful of guys that all rate similarly that they can grab later, but I thought Rashad Johnson was the pick here. I guess we'll see what this Gilbert guy can do. I bet they try to make him play some DE too, since he ran one of the fastest 40 times at the combine among DTs. Gil Brandt of NFL.com pegged him as one of the top players on the board to start day 2, FWIW.

Not getting one of the top 9 WRs--doesn't this mean that realistically Bears are looking at Hester and Bennett as starters this season? With Cutler as QB both those guys should be bumped significantly in fantasy.

I liked Iglesias better than Massaquoi, and they got him a day later. I kind of hoped they could of grabbed Barden, but they did o.k.

I like both picks...hopefully a few of Chicago's picks can stick in the league.

EDIT: Why did Melton fall? I thought the guy looked as good as Orakpo, but I only saw two Texas games...

Melton was a FB that out-grew the position, nice upside...

Forgot all about Iglesias. Solid pick
Who is Melton? NFL.com doesn't have anything on the guy.
04/20/2009 - A converted running back, Texas' Henry Melton has played defensive end only two seasons. He might have to switch positions again when he gets to the NFL. Some 3-4 teams are looking at the former Grapevine product at outside linebacker. He worked out for the Cowboys there last week. "I haven't played a lot of linebacker since high school," Melton said in a telephone interview. "I'm a pretty athletic guy, good in space, so that's what a lot of teams are looking at." Besides the Cowboys, Melton has visited with the Colts, Bears, Vikings, Buccaneers, Packers and 49ers. He is projected as a sixth-round choice. - Charean Williams, Star-Telegram

Like the Melton pick. Very athletic. Used to be a rb I think. This is the type of guy I can see stepping up with some good coaching.

Now we're talkin.....DJ Moore, defensive back our other 4th rounder
I wonder if they project him as a CB or a safety? He was a corner in college. Are the Bears getting a Vanderbilt discount or something? They have a lot of Vandy players.

Looks solid. Draftcountdown has him as 6th ranked guy, just 2 behind Alphonso Smith and almost an identical prospect.
The Bears are getting some good athletes. Melton was a RB before he was switched to D line. DJ Moore played all over the field. I'd still like to see O line picks, I always want O linemen. I'd like to see another WR, and a safety.

No doubt, Moore looks like he could be another Vasher type pick and according to NFL.com was projected as a possible 1st before the combine and stuff and they get him after he slides all the way the 4th. Not a terrible haul considering they had no 1st and traded out of the 2nd. 2 picks still coming in the 5th. 2 picks in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds has been nice.

I'm liking this draft a lot so far. :wall:
Especially with Cutler considered as part of the haul. Yeah the 1st in 2010 is still out there, but the 1st and 3rd this year already got chewed up and we still have the 5th upcoming here. And based on Denver's deal we have some idea of what the 1st in 2010 is really worth at this point. Terrific work with his picks all around by Jerry this year.

Some more competition and speed at WR. Looks like he definitely has the most upside of the remaining WR's on the board. Another solid pick.

Johnny Knox's stats at A. Christian. Probably not going to stick in the league, but I love when the Bears roll the dice on a small-school talent.

From the draft guys:

4.3 40yd dash! I'm sure the guy fell to the 5th for a reason, but you can't teach that type of athleticism.

All in all, Angelo acquired a handful of excellent athletes. If they have the toughness/brain to stick, the Cutler trade looks even better than before. Check back in three years, but I like Angelo's record when it comes to finding gems in the later rounds. The man has his faults, but he certainly stands out among his peers on the second day of the draft.

\DJ Moore is not big enough or thick enough and doesn't tackle well enough to be a safety. He isn't going to run through many people. Too slight from abdomen to knees.I think he projects well as a nice nickel corner in the NFL. He's shifty and changes directions really well. Has great ball skills. Finds the ball well and won't drop many. Instinctive. Doesn't get lost in the play. Natural, fluid athlete with high fitness level. Could run all day. At various points, was Vandy's best offensive, defensive and special teams player. Was a difference maker in SEC as a true freshman. Good leaper that helps him "play taller." High jumped 6"6" in high school. Highly productive and decorated...he was All-SEC, All-American. Good team guy who always wanted to be on the field. Lacks essential physicality that is going to hurt him against your bigger, stronger receivers. Is still young yet. Turned 22 in March. Played through pain/injury in Music City Bowl to help seal victory over BC. Value as punt returner and kick returner where I would expect him to contribute immediately. Could learn both offensive and defensive playbooks in an attempt to free up gameday roster slot. In Kentucky game, had two touchdown receptions and two interceptions. We don't see that very often. Some will say he should have stayed in school for his Senior year, but he's not going to grow any taller between now and then.
