It's 24 hours later and it still hasn't sunk in. I've had this stupid grin on my face all day and nothing will take it off. Woke up this morning and stood in line to get my family their hats and T-shirts. "Eighteen and one!" chants with complete strangers at 7AM is a great way to start the day. Hi-5ing complete strangers and getting calls of congrats from friends all over the country is making me realize how important this game really was.
I was 13 for Super Bowl XXI and remember what a great feeling that was. My uncle was a life long Giants fan and his dream was to see the Giants in the Super Bowl. He died a month before that Super Bowl and my Dad would tell me all about the games they went to together at the Yale Bowl and Yankee Stadium. About the great plays and the great players. About how his big brother passed on his love for this great franchise to him and how happy he was that I was becoming a Giants fan.
Simms had the greatest game in Super Bowl History after years of being maligned (My Godfather still can't stand the guy). Bavaro. McConkey first missing a TD by half a yard, then catching the rebound off Bavaro for a score! He looked like a 12 year old kid when he jumped on top of Bavaro after that. Pepper Johnson and William Roberts doing the "Stomp and Grind" on the Super Bowl logo at midfield.
That night was the first time I can remember seeing my dad cry. Tears of joy and pain. So happy his team won, yet realizing the reason he was so happy, wasn't there in the first place.
I was 17 for Super Bowl XXV. There was a lot expected of this team, then Simms got hurt. The defense was solid and the Giants may have been the favorites had Simms played instead of seldom used Jeff Hostetler. I had offers to go to Super Bowl parties at friends houses, but I really wanted to watch the game with my dad and my brothers. We were rewarded with "Wide Right" and it was great to be a Giants fan again!
I'm 34 now, have a family of my own. My Parents came over to watch the game last night, as did my brothers. My wife's family was here too. They are Giants fans just like us, which made it real easy to get married during the Giants bye week in 2000! It was a Sea of Blue in my house when Eli made that drive. My Mom who was quiet through most of the game said Eli "would not be denied this win!" when he broke free from the pile of Patriots. Tyree, Montclair NJ native represent!, made the most unbelieveable catch. the ball stuck to his helmet as Rodney Harrison was trying desperately to knock it loose. The emotion during that last drive was unreal. My kids (6 & 3) were not going to bed...not yet! They would not have been able to sleep anyway with the noise coming out of my living room!
Eli hits Steve Smith for a huge first down to the 13. Then...
We have a pair of Season Tickets that my dad has had since Giants Stadium opened. Between him and my 2 brothers we split the tickets throughout the year. For some reason my youngest brother and I got to go to a few games together this season. We would sit up in Section 318 and talk about the games and strategies and wonder aloud on more than a several dozen occassions, why they never threw the fade to Plax when they were in the Red Zone. He seems to always be matched up in single coverage and is always half a foot taller than the guy covering him.
... Eli drops back and lobs the ball to the left corner of the end zone. The Fade! To Plax! TOUCHDOWN GIANTS!!!!!! Mass hysteria ensues in my TV room. We are jumping up and down! Crying, laughing, hugging. My 3 year old son is in the middle of it all just soaking it all in. My dad is beaming was me and my brothers converge on him for a group hug. A Giants Super Bowl with my family...it Doesn't get any better than this!!!
I get home from the store with my Giants swag this morning before anyone has woken up yet. I go into the kitchen to watch another replay of Sportscenter to make sure I didn't dream it all last night and have some breakfast. My 3 year old son is the first to wake up. He comes into the kitchen rubbing his eyes. "Hey Dad", he says. "Yeah, dude" I answer. He gets this grin across his face, pumps his fist and says "Touchdown, Giants!!" That's my boy! Another generation of Big Blue Fans is born!
I can't get this stupid grin off my face today.
