***OFFICIAL 2006 WORLD SERIES Game Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Do Cards fans look at tonight as a must-win? If you lose tonight, you get Rogers in game 6, who has apparently channeled the ghost of 1986 Mike Scott or something. I remember how desperate the Mets were to win game 6 of the 86 NLCS, as Scott was going in 7 and that sucker was over if it got there -- but then the Cards do at least have a game 7 remaining, with possibly Carpenter pitching that game. Still, it would be in Detroit and the momentum would have swung at that point.
Assuming Carpenter is still slated to start game 7, which I think he is, I do not look at tonight as a must-win, though it would be nice, obviously. ;)Momentum in baseball is only as good as your next starting pitcher, so even if the Cardinals lose games 5 and 6, there is no one I would rather have on the mound in game 7 than Chris Carpenter.

Thank you, David Eckstein, for finally waking up. It couldn't have come at a better time.
Good for him, for you need a little luck in baseball. But that was the single luckiest 4-5 I've ever seen.
Ask me if I care. The Cardinals are one win away from a World Series championship. I couldn't care less how lucky they have been. :)
No reason you should care. I'm just making an observation.
Okay, but remember, teams often make their own luck. If the Tigers keep beating themselves, like some have suggested they are doing, and the Cardinals are not, isn't it a natural conclusion to say that the team that is not beating themself and taking advantage of the mistakes by the other team has been the better team?
I thought the Tigers were stupoosed to sweep this series?
Talk to USA Today. :lmao:

I find it really fascinating that Kenny Rogers has suddenly become one of the top clutch pitchers in the game. Ask a Tigers fan how many pitchers in all of baseball they would rather have on the mound for them right now. I'll bet the answer is less than 5.
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but is anyone else suspicious of Rogers being on the juice? He has suddenly become a dominant pitcher very late in his career (very Bonds-like). That and all of his yelling and screaming to himself when he's on the mound. :roidrage:

Why yes, I am. But the caveat is that I am also suspicious of every other athlete in each of the 4 major sports as well.

Agreed. Kenny Rogers improves late in his career and gets steroid suspiscions. Winston Justice is 6'8'', 320lbs, runs a 4.7 40 at the combine and has like a 45-inch vertical leap and he's just a great athlete.

Yes, but Winston does all that pine tar free.

Rob Neyer and Allen Schwartz (who do the Baseball Today podcast...well worth a download whenever it's available) both picked the Tigers to win the series. Neyer says the Tigers are going to win both games in St. Louis.
Steve Phillips was the guest of Schwartz' on the Baseball Today podcast this time around. Phillips' prediction for the next 2 games? Same as Neyer's. Tigers win them both.
Rob Neyer back on today. Prediction? Tigers win game 5.

I'm pretty sure S&D raised the possibility at least once, although that was teh juice. Same thing, I assume.

BY BEN SCHMITTFREE PRESS STAFF WRITERST. LOUIS - At Albert Pujols’ restaurant in suburban St. Louis, they’re gearing up for a free champagne toast after tonight’s World Series game.“If the weather doesn’t get in the way, we’re going to take it tonight,” said Tiffany Lindsey, a manager at Pujols 5, the restaurant owned by the Cardinals’ famed slugger. “The Tigers made it interesting but they missed their opportunities last night.”On Thursday, the restaurant was full with a capacity 600 people and others waited outside for a chance to get in on the celebration. At nearby Ozzie’s, a restaurant owned by former Cardinals’ great Ozzie Smith, they’re planning a party tonight hosted by Smith himself and former player Willie McGee and ex-manager Whitey Herzog.Smith, McGee and Herzog were on the 1982 World Series champion Cardinals team.A band, fronted by Nikko Smith, Ozzie’s son who performed on American Idol, is playing at tonight’s party.“The momentum is all with the Cards,” said Dan Engel, a restaurant manager at Ozzie’s. “We’re going to clinch tonight and St. Louis will go nuts. It’s a special time.”

Bill Simmons today...

(Although not as much fun as Thursday night's sequence with Jeff Suppan and Scooter the Talking Baseball on Fox. Is there a way to wager that Suppan will get arrested for exposing himself in an X-rated theater within the next five years?)
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Jesus..

St. Louis has embarrassed itself with its selection of musical participants. This is one of the best cities in the world for jazz and blues, and we get all these washed up hicks?

Is this "Big Screen Store" ad local or nationwide?

Do they really think the prospect of seeing the 50-year-olds in Duran Duran performing their new bland pop crap in concert is what's going to sell me on dropping two dimes on a High Def TV?

That's crap. Where is that 2-2 pitch?

ETA - exact same pitch on Mags is a strike

That's a Mute for me. Bad shtick.

I do not give a single on that play. It was a great stop by Inge, but he made an error that if he did not make it was an out at 1st. How is that a hit. 2 base error in my book.

No bunt? Yet another mistake by Leyland as well as Inge!
Why bunt a runner over to third with 2 outs? A baserunning mistake no doubt, but not a managing mistake. No mention the inning before when Weaver was not bunting.

There was only 1 out and Verlander has one career at bat. Absolutely astounding he put the ball in play at all. A bunt gives Verlander the best chance to at least move the runner up.

No good in moving the runner up there. He's scoring from second on most anything to the OF. The out was more valuable.

I was thinking that Inge on third there at least has the possibility of scoring on a wild pitch as well as a hit.
