***Official 2007 CLEVELAND INDIANS Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Nice to see the bats come alive.

Fernando Cabrera is a problem. Eight runs and 14 hits over his past 6 1/3 innings isn't going to cut it out of the pen. He needs to turn it around FAST.

i was at the game and what a blast!

the first two innings were such a beating

byrd really settled down and pitched well after the first

the ball was really carrying last night

As Marte toils, Tribe brass ponders moveWednesday, May 16, 2007Dennis Manoloff and Paul HoynesPlain Dealer Reporters The Indians' deep thinkers apparently will wait until the last possible moment to decide what to do with Andy Marte. Marte, the Tribe's Opening Day third baseman, has been on the disabled list since April 23. He began a rehabilitation assignment with Class AAA Buffalo on April 29. A rehab assignment cannot last longer than 20 days for a position players, 30 days for pitchers. "We need to make a decision by the end of the day Friday whether to bring him up or option him," Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro said Tuesday. "We're certainly going to lean toward bringing him back, based on the fact that he was on the team and there really hasn't been enough season yet. But we're going to make decisions that are in the best interests of this team. We'll have a lot of healthy conversations." Tribe manager Eric Wedge said, "We'll give it this week and go from there." Marte's 4-for-4 performance Monday against Rochester was not enough to convince the bosses to bring him back. The outburst came after a slow start with the Bisons. He entered Tuesday batting .276 with two homers and three RBI in nine games. In the early stages of Marte's DL stint, it seemed fairly certain he would return to Cleveland. But the strong play of Casey Blake at third and Ryan Garko at first have muddied the waters for Marte, who batted .179 with one homer in 13 games for Cleveland before the injury. Marte has played just 87 major-league games.

When they made him the opening day starter, that's a statement that the club is prepared to be patient and let the kid take his lumps at the major-league level. If they aren't willing to do that, then there's no point in even trading for Marte in the first place. You might as well sign a cheap veteran, or if one isn't to be had, sign two cheap marginal veterans to platoon the thing. Ping-ponging the kid around is the abolutely worst thing you could do for him.On the other hand, there may be pressure on the club to finally get over the hump make the playoffs. If this team disappoints yet again, there are probably changes coming in management. So there really isn't time to be patient with a struggling rookie, and Marte may wind up paying the price.

C.C. looking like the ace we always wanted him to be.

Sabathia is off to the best start of his career. He's made seven quality starts -- three or fewer runs in six or more innings -- in nine starts.
Solid. :bag: Just love how Grady Sizemore plays the game.
Sizemore pushed the Tribe to a 3-1 lead in the third. He worked Silva for a leadoff walk, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Hafner's sacrifice fly.
Love seeing stuff like this.13-3 at home. :lmao:

Has to be Wedge and his staff. The front office is about as secure as it gets.

8-2 vs the Central. No games vs KC or Det. :banned:

Santana got a little rattled in the 5th. Michaels got on, then a balk and wild pitch got him to 3rd. Rouse struck out, but had about a 10 pitch at bat. Looking for some runs in the 6th with the top coming up.....

Agreed. How long we looking at Westy being out? Sowers just pooped his pants. But maybe he needs another stint at AAA to find his groove again.
Not sure on Westbrook. Not long though. Maybe next week? :confused:Indians back in 1st place!

Let's not get carried away there. I remember in 1990 how the Reds had Jack Armstrong goes bonkers for them in the first half of the season. Made the all-star team. I think he started the all-star game. and that was it for him. He labored thru the second half of 1990, even tho the Reds won the world series that year. Then in 1992, he gets traded to Cleveland with Scott Scudder. Was out of baseball by 1994.My point is, Carmona doesn't have a track record. I'd like to see a couple years of dominance in the bigs before I feel comfortable relying on him.

Let me get this straight...In his last 5 starts Carmona is 5-0...has pitched 7+ innings in each...has giving up a total of 6 earned runs...and has beaten Johan Santana TWICE...and you want to send him down to AAA?

Who would you rather have as your Indians' starting second baseman.

1. Josh Barfield

2. Brandon Phillips

Don't factor in other things like the pieces traded away or whatnot. Just who would you prefer at 2B?

Fantasy question:

Andy Marte? What's going on with this guy and who is going to be playing 3B with him back? I've read a lot of stuff saying he might just be a prospect and little more at this point.

I wouldn't expect too much from him from a fantasy perspective. Sounds like he'll be a situational player from here on out. From yesterday's PD...
Marte back, but now on the bench

Andy Marte made it back from Class AAA Buffalo on Saturday only to find himself in a new job.

When Marte left for his rehab assignment after straining his left hamstring on April 22, he was the starting third baseman. Upon returning, manager Eric Wedge told him he'd be playing primarily against left-handers.

"By baseball standards somebody isn't supposed to lose their job or have it altered because they were injured two weeks into the season," said Wedge. "But because of what we've seen from Casey Blake and Ryan Garko, and how this team has played, you're always going to put the team ahead of the individual."

The Indians went 17-7 without Marte. Blake took over at third, which gave more playing time to Garko at first.

Garko went into Saturday's game hitting .342 (26-for-76) with four homers and nine RBI since Marte's injury. Blake has hit .301 (28-for-93) with two homers and 15 RBI over the same period.

"This move is more about the guys who have been playing and doing such a good job for us," said Wedge.

The Indians optioned Franklin Gutierrez to Buffalo to make room for Marte.

"I'm just glad I'm back," said Marte. "I'll do whatever they want me to do."

Marte, whose rehab assignment was slowed because he needed a wisdom tooth removed last week, could have been activated and optioned to Buffalo.

"We wanted him back," said Wedge.

When Marte plays third, Blake will move to right field. Garko will stay at first.

"If Andy plays third base the way we know he can, this should help us against left-handers," said Wedge.

The Indians are 5-6 in games started by opposing left-handers. They're hitting .253 against lefties and .272 against righties.

Marte hit .242 (8-for-33) with two homers and three RBI during his rehab assignment.

I wanted things with Phillips to work out here. But he probably would not be doing now what he's doing with the Reds if we never let him get away. His mind wasn't right and Wedge didn't have confidence in him. That said, I'll take Barfield. His defense is fantastic and his stick is looking better.
