"It's not normal," Torii Hunter said of Carmona's go-to pitch. "He's not even human. It was so scary, I thought I was hung over."
:)
:unsure:
More hilarities to get ready for Fausto's start today. Let's hope he keeps it going.
Carmona threw a career-high 121 pitches. He said over 100 were two-seam sinkers.
"It's not normal," Torii Hunter said of Carmona's go-to pitch. "He's not even human. :unsure: "It was so scary, I thought I was hung over,". "It will be nice to go to Milwaukee and face normal pitchers. . . . "That dude is filthy," he added. "We've been struggling, but even if we had been playing good, we wouldn't have beaten him. If you've never played the game, listen to me, I'm a hitter. Right-handers have no chance unless they get lucky and get a hit on a broken bat."
Martinez, Carmona's catcher, knows how Hunter feels. "You can't really believe how big that sinker is," said Martinez, "until you're back there. He's throwing it 94 mph to 96 mph. "I've told him before that he could pitch a whole game throwing that one pitch." Martinez's instructions to Carmona are simple. "I just tell him to throw it down the middle," said Martinez. "It's not going to end up down the middle. It's going to be down and away."
''I could see the frustration on their faces,'' Martinez said. ''They knew the two-seamer (sinking fastball) was coming, but it's just so tough to hit. I just told Fausto, ÔKeep it down and throw it right for the middle of the plate. Because by the time it gets to me it won't be in the middle of the plate.'''
"He ate us up," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He didn't give us much of a chance."
Added Michael Cuddyer: ''He was throwing 96 mph sinkers that were just disappearing. His stuff today, in my years in baseball, I haven't seen anything better.'' And Jason Kubel: ''I don't remember seeing a ball move like that. I was able to see the pitches. They'd come in and look pretty good, down the middle. (But) when I made contact the ball was almost out of the strike zone. It was crazy.''

I don't think Carmona will see Buffalo again this year.
Let's not get carried away there.My point is, Carmona doesn't have a track record. I'd like to see a couple years of dominance in the bigs before I feel comfortable relying on him.
Let me get this straight...In his last 5 starts Carmona is 5-0...has pitched 7+ innings in each...has giving up a total of 6 earned runs...and has beaten Johan Santana TWICE...and you want to send him down to AAA?
I didn't say that. The Indians really have 6 starters who should be in a rotation. Its not easy to just send Sowers down either. He's only 24. What happens if Carmona starts to struggle? Then you bring Sowers back up? Is yo-yoing both guys up and down really the best way to handle them? Ideally, you'd let both guys start and take their lumps. There just isn't room do it though.

When I look at the Tigers, and I see them taking 2 of 3 from the Royals, and not getting lots of sweeps at the marshmallow soft part of the schedule
How's this going BGP?
Disturbing. You have to be concerned about the Indians now. However, it doesn't mean the Tigers are any good. I've already settled on either the Indians or White Sox winning the central. The Indians-Royals series is evidence that the White Sox take it.

The Tigers already used up the easy portion of the schedule. And they couldn't even kick out a decent lead in the division. That tells me all I need to know. This team is done.
Just wanted to make sure this was here also so I can find it later. BGP is a great asset to Indians fans everywhere and actually makes Buckeyes fans look reasonable. Thanks for having him in your camp. :popcorn:

I have to say I'm impressed by the Indians though. Tigers have a ton of injuries and I think they would have won this game healthy but the Indians if they are a legitimate team, should win this game...and they did. So now I believe they are a team to reckon with and will be right there when the final standings are in bold print on October 1st.

Lost a lot of respect for you I'm afraid. I speak my mind. I respect other who do the same. I held the opinion a year ago that you had a strong team, and I was proven right. The least you could do is not resort to personal attacks when I hold a different view in a different year. Burt whatever, I would permaban you for the above quote. Its just boring to read that.

What happened to the post from May 26th at 640pm? It seems to be missing.

I was in bad form. :yes:

Been a LONG weekend for me....

But, glad we brought the brooms out on the Tigers. I wonder what's going on over in their thread after the TB loss last night. Seems BGP and DD had some fun over here.

Time to get one back tonight against the Sux.

I'll be at game 4 tonight when the Cavs even the series up. Good times, my friends.

What a crap call on Blake
Might be time to brush up on the rules juniorfrom the MLB rule book.

Rule 6.05 - A batter is out when:

(f) He attempts to hit a third strike and the ball touches him;

Official Rules: 2.0 Definition of Terms

A STRIKE is a legal pitch when so called by the umpire, which --

(a) Is struck at by the batter and is missed;

(b) Is not struck at, if any part of the ball passes through any part of the strike zone;

© Is fouled by the batter when he has less than two strikes;

(d) Is bunted foul;

(e) Touches the batter as he strikes at it;

(f) Touches the batter in flight in the strike zone; or

(g) Becomes a foul tip.

Official Rules: 6.00 The Batter

6.08

(b) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (1) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (2) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball;

If the ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a strike, whether or not the batter tries to avoid the ball. If the ball is outside the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a ball if he makes no attempt to avoid being touched.

APPROVED RULING: When the batter is touched by a pitched ball which does not entitle him to first base, the ball is dead and no runner may advance.

Also see Baseball Prospectus

BP: c) The hands are part of the bat.

JE: This is another misconception. The hands are NOT part of the bat. If a pitched ball hits the hands and the batter did not attempt to swing, it is a hit batsman. If a pitched ball hits the hands as he swings, it is a strike and the ball is dead. Reference: Rule 2.00 Strike (e.)

:lmao: He CLEARLY swung at it... it clearly hit his hand. I fail to see how anyone was "screwed" by the umps here....

my issue with the calls last night would be the larger than normal strike zone that shill and pap each had. some of those strike were definately balls

I didn't see the play last night, but from what I've read Blake was on first base for some time before he was ruled out. Is this true? Home plate ump should get a ruling from the 1B ump before he awards the batter first base.

I don't think the rule or call is what is being contested, it's how the umps did come to the conclusion and if it was even a swing. Wedge seemed to indicate that Blake did not swing at that pitch. Sox fans here seem to state he CLEARLY swung.

But again, I have not seen it.

His bat crosed the plane. His hands were up by his face and the bat was perpendicular to the incoming ball. His whole body twisted as in the early stages of a swing... then he flinched ad the ball tailed inward.

Wasn't that clear to the home plate umpire.

Surprised the Indians kept both games as close as they did seeing the pitching matchups. Hope to get one here today and go 5-4 on the roadie. :ph34r:

Here's a reminder for you guys.

1996: Indians won the season series vs Orioles 7-5. Orioles won ALDS vs Indians 3-1.

1997: Yankees win the season series vs Indians 7-5. Indians win ALDS vs Indians 3-2

1997: Orioles win season series vs Indians 6-5. Indians win ALCS vs Orioles 4-2.

1998: Red Sox win the season series vs Indians 8-3. Indians win ALDS vs Red Sox 3-1.

So its not like winning a season series tells us much about the postseason. We just need to get to the playoffs.

Percival's comeback bid piques Tribe's interestWednesday, May 30, 2007Paul HoynesPlain Dealer Reporter Boston -- The Indians were one of several teams to send a scout to watch right-hander Troy Percival throw Tuesday in California. Percival, who retired after the 2006 season, is attempting a comeback. General Manager Mark Shapiro has been trying to improve the Tribe's late-inning relief since Keith Foulke retired in February. "We'll be one of many teams out there watching Percival because so many teams need bullpen help," said Shapiro, who attended Tuesday's game at Fenway Park. Percival, 37, had 324 career saves. He has not pitched in the majors since July 2005 with Detroit, retiring in 2006 following a serious injury to his right elbow. "It's our obligation to explore every potential option to improve our team," said Shapiro. "If there's a free agent available at this point of the year, that's an option." The Indians have four effective relievers in Joe Borowski, Rafael Betancourt, Tom Mastny and Aaron Fultz. Roberto Hernandez and Fernando Cabrera have struggled, while newcomers Mike Koplove and Rafael Perez are trying to establish themselves.

Nice to see the bats come alive to pound Matsuzaka.

Disappointing start in KC but finish a tough road trip 5-4 including the sweep in DET. Left town 1/2 game up, come back 2 1/2 up. :thumbdown:

DET in town for 4. Going tomorrow night. :porked:

Another successful roadtrip. Yes, we lost two series, but one was at Boston so that's not a failure...and we swept our closest competition at this time.

Tribe looked good last night...bats ripping Dice K all over the place... :bag:

Paul Byrd has been simply awesome this year

Detroit coming in off a series loss to the Rays :rant:

Thoughts on Marte's demotion a few days ago to call up RP Koplove? Yea, I said Koplove.

Marte is now out of options.

I guess they want him to hit everyday and enjoy watching one of Nixon/Dellucci butcher lefties.

Is the Pistons/Cavs game tonight the biggest Cleveland sporting event since game 7 of the '97 WS? At least until Saturday and maybe Monday.

Maybe the Browns playoff game vs Pitt....but I don't think we were quite thinking Super Bowl there, just having fun.

Would have to think so.
