****OFFICIAL**** 2008 Washington Redskins Off Season Thread! (1 Viewer)

Has anybody considered the possibility that maybe the 4 interviews were for Danny to try to convince Williams to take the job and that Williams is the one holding back, and not Danny? Just a thought...

And, BTW, the Democrats will have a presidential nominee before the Redskins hire a Head Coach. Sheesh...

Williams doesn't have any bargaining chips, it's not like anyone else has interviewed him. The only thing I can think of is maybe he wants more power in personnel decisions.

Also the news out of Redskins Park has been strongly indicating that GW absolutely wants this job. I can't think of a reason why he wouldn't - after all, the other plum coaching jobs have already been filled, and he hasn't been interviewing anyway. I think, if GW isn't the issue, that this necessarily means 1 of 2 things:

1) GW is the new head coach, and they're trying to find a OC who can work with him (Saunders is gone); or

2) They want someone other than GW to be the head coach.

The thing that causes me to doubt the first scenario is that, until Fassel, they've only interviewed defensive coaches.

The thing that causes me to doubt the second scenario is that, other than Fassel, I don't see any other viable candidates out there to be the head coach who have already been interviewed.

In short, I don't know WTF they're thinking. :P

In short, I don't know WTF they're thinking. :goodposting:
...and that's been the frustrating part. None of it makes any damn sense at all. Which is the only reason I, like Czabe, am not 100% convinced Cowher is completely out of the picture. I mean, the last 4 coaches we've had, we've more or less been told there's no chance in hell they'd be in DC...and sure enough, there they were. All I know is that with the current crop of names that have been batted around, I pray Williams gets the job.

Fassel Is The Mystery Guy

We will have a new story up on Washingtonpost.com in a minute. According to numerous sources Fassel was the guy who interviewed Friday Jan. 11 and he also interviewed yesterday.

He has emerged as a leading candidate, with owner Daniel Snyder choosing between him or Gregg Williams for the job, likely this week.

mother####ing ESPN link

Jim Fassel, the last coach to take the New York Giants to a Super Bowl, had a second interview with Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder on Tuesday, a source close to the situation told ESPN.

Fassel appears to be emerging as a serious candidate to replace Joe Gibbs as Redskins head coach. He could be considered for the offensive coordinator's job, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen, although Snyder and Fassel did not discuss that possibility Tuesday.

The story is up on the Washington Post

Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel has interviewed twice for the Washington Redskins' vacant head coaching position, according to league sources, and is a leading candidate to get the position. Fassel completed his last interview yesterday and flew back to his home in Arizona, sources said, and he and Redskins assistant head coach-defense, Gregg Williams, are the only people to meet with owner Daniel Snyder more than once.

Fassel, who was on the verge of getting the Redskins' job in 2004 before Snyder landed a deal with Joe Gibbs, was impressive in his interviews at that time and has heavy support this time. Williams, who has been endorsed by coaches and players, was seen by agents and executives around the league as the front-runner for the position, but there has been some pause by ownership in the matter since he last interviewed a week ago.
Williams does not have a close relationship with Cerrato, which is seen by some around the league as a potential factor, and Snyder met with him on four occasions, gauging their ability to coexist as well as going over football issues.

Just f'ing great! "Gregg, I really like you to lead my company, but how can I hired you to do that when you don't get along with my autistic son?" :goodposting:

Seriously. What else can Cerrato do to mess up this franchise?

This will not end well.
 Frankly, it hasn't begun well either, dating back to 1999 and broken only by Gibbs' short involvement. :wall:If Cerrato is indeed the reason why GW can't be hired, then the only hope is that they land a true up-and-comer like Spagnuolo. There's no guarantee that he'll sign on though. Unbelievable.

Vinny Is The Man

What can I say. Dude got promoted again. Hot off the presses from the Redskins. Looks like he will assume a lot of the power Joe Gibbs used to have. I'm not making this up:

VINNY CERRATO NAMED EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

ASHBURN, VA - The Washington Redskins today named Vinny Cerrato to the new position of Executive Vice President/Football Operations. He will assume responsibility for all aspects of the team's football organization - including personnel, the team roster, scouting and salary cap management.

"The appointment formalizes the structure the team has operated under in recent years, and is recognition of the valuable role Vinny has played this season, especially during a time of terrible tragedy," said team Owner Daniel M. Snyder. "During the past season we were hit with an unprecedented number of injuries, and Vinny consistently identified players who stepped in and stepped up to help take us to the playoffs."

Joe Gibbs, who recently retired after four years as Head Coach and Team President added, "Vinny worked closely with me on all personnel matters. This is a well-deserved acknowledgement of that."

"Today's Washington Redskins roster is a testament to Vinny and the personnel department being an integral part of our team structure in identifying players, whether acquired in free agency, the draft or on sometimes very short notice as we made our way through the season," Gibbs said.

Cerrato currently is playing a central role in the search for Gibbs' replacement, as he did four years ago when the Head Coach position last was open.

"The team's executive ranks are solid with Vinny at the head of the football operation and Chief Operating Officer Mitch Gershman leading the Redskins' other important business," Snyder said. "Their close working relationship ensures strong leadership."

Cerrato is entering his 18 th season in the NFL and 9 th season with the Redskins. Before coming to Washington, he spent nine seasons, and earned his first Super Bowl ring, with the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as Director of College Scouting and Director of Player Personnel.

Before joining the NFL, he worked with Lou Holtz at Notre Dame as football recruiting coordinator, winning a national championship ring. He began his career as a graduate assistant for the Minnesota Golden Gophers before being promoted to recruiting coordinator.

Cerrato is a 1982 graduate of Iowa State, where he lettered at quarterback and wide receiver all four years. He was born in Flushing, NY, and grew up in Albert Lea, MN, where he played football, hockey and ran track. Cerrato and his wife Rebecca have two sons, Vincent John and Charles.

If Cerrato is indeed the reason why GW can't be hired, then the only hope is that they land a true up-and-comer like Spagnuolo.
Scratch that.
The other paper got something major wrong in its "story" today, if that's what you can call it that. The Redskins have never asked for permission to speak to any Giants coaches, according to numerous league sources, which I reported yesterday. And the article also gets the process wrong - the Redskins would now have to wait until after the Super Bowl to interview Giants D Coordinator Steve Sganuolo or anyone else. The window tyhis week, the bye week before the Super Bowl is for second interviews only, or in cases where teams asked permission previously. Redskins don't qualify for either.

Spoke at length with Spagnuolo's agent last night. He could be a great candidate, but he can not speak to the Redskins this week and has never been contacted by them. Atlanta tried to interview Spagnuolo during the window to talk to playoff coaches a few weeks back and was rebuffed. The Redskins never asked for permission at that time, and thus would have to wait until February to even approach him

Spagnuolo is a rising star, no doubt, and there was as rumor making its way around the league yesterday that had the Giants lost Spagnuolo would have been a candidate for several openings. The Falcons might wait him out. But I can assure you he won't be talking to the Redskins for quite some time.

As I read that, that doesn't rule out Spagnuolo. They just can't talk to him until after the Super Bowl now. Maybe the result is the same if they're unwilling to wait of course, but it may be an important distinction.

The lesson, boys and girls, is that brown-nosing and losing at racquetball to rich and powerful team owners, is the one true path to success and great riches. Well, this would explain why it would be so important for Williams (or any coach) to get along with Vinny. The best thing Marty did during his year here was to boot Vinny's ### out of Redskins Park...Czabe and Andy will have field day with this tonight...

No &*#^%$@ kidding.

You're right, it doesn't rule him out. But I'd say that, since Vinny's been installed, the new head coach is soon to follow. I don't think they'll be waiting a couple more weeks. Remember, this is theater.

If they hire Williams as coach, Vinnie's promotion doesn't matter. Williams wasn't going to get the same leeway in personnel matters that Gibbs got anyway. Vinnie's title enhancement doesn't change that.

If they hire Fassel as coach, then it's time to burn couches in the street. Didn't Dr. Suess write a book one time called "Dodos All Around"?

If they're not going with Williams, then I hope to God you're wrong.

I havn't been this depressed about the team since it was rumored Ray Rhodes would get the job 4 years ago.

Oh well...bring on the impending free agency spending spree to to drown our sorrows.

how stupid would Snyder have to be to hire Fassel? I mean SERIOUSLY, what has he done that makes Snyder think he's an improvement over Williams? And what about all the players who have come out and said they WANT Williams as the new head coach? :hangover: :sadbanana: :blackdot:

When the news of Mora being interviewed broke out, there was an uproar. Now I bet that the same people would give anything to see Mora as the front runner over Fassel. I told myself that no matter who they hired I wouldn't rush to judgement, but Fassel pushes that thinking to its limits.

An article from December, 2003, written to Buffalo Bills fans who wanted Gregg Williams replaced by Jim Fassel:

Jim Fassel for head coach? Be careful what you wish for

In fact, being a "Gint’s" fan, I have been privileged to many (many) close games, regardless of the opponent, because Jim Fassel’s offense could never find away to put a team away. This was partially a function of Fassel’s passing offense and partially a function of Fassel’s coaching style. I am of the belief there are two types of coaches; the ones that coach “to win” and the other coaches “not to lose”. Coaches like Parcell’s, Jim Johnson, and **** Vermeil pull out all the bags of tricks in big games. They play with confidence in their players and the players respond. Fassel typically tightens up in big games. His play calling gets more conservative. Fassel’s teams usually won against the teams they were supposed to beat, but the assumption is that good teams will break even against each other. Fassel obviously won some games against winning teams but his overall record against winning teams is abysmal.

Not sure if anyone wants to think about this, but does anyone have any ideas who Fassel would have on his staff if he were hired as HC?

It's a little hard seeing Williams and the other defesive coaches staying if Fassel is hired.

I guess this makes Cerrato the de facto GM, doesn't it?

Maybe Fassel will change. Look at what Norv Turner just did. He he took a team that was 14-2 and lost 24-21 in the playoffs last year to New England, and got them to 11-5 and a 21-12 loss to New England in the playoffs this year.

7-9 here we come! You can do it Coach Jim!

Did anyone hear Schefter say this tonight? This is from a Redskin board:

On Total Access, Adam Schefter used stronger language than anyone has before in characterizing the Fassel situation. He said that the Redskins are "zeroing in" on Fassel as "the leading candidate" (not a leading, but the leading.)He also said that, according to a Baltimore source, the Redskins are "interested in hiring" Rex Ryan as the DC.
Reason I ask is because Schefter said, last week, that they were going to hire Mora.

That is the hot rumor at the Senior Bowl, and Rex knows Jim and Vinny Cerrato has ties to Rex. Makes sense. So you would be looking at major overhauls to the staff.Snyder and Cerrato are mulling this over tonight but I would not be surprised to see someone get an offer Wed. At this point I am told the Redskins have still said nothing to Williams and the rest of the coaches and all signs pointing to Fassel. Snyder could always go the other way, and, this organization is capable of anything, but there is lots of angst among the players and coaches - especially those down at the Senior Bowl in Mobile.Posted by Jason La Canfora

Who would have thought that when Snyder emphasized the need for continuity, that meant promoting Cerrato and dumping the whole coaching staff, which will certainly lead to much higher player turnover.

REDSKINS' MYSTERY IS SOLVED

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that the mystery candidate in Washington is none other than former Giants coach Jim Fassel.

There were rumors on Monday of a Redskins plane in Green Bay; apparently, the plane was there to bring Fassel, who worked the game for Westwood One, to town.

Glazer says that Fassel actually has been interviewed twice. When owner Dan Snyder and V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato went to Arizona earlier this month ostensibly to interview Cardinals assistant Russ Grimm, they actually were meeting with Fassel.

Fassel was fired by the Giants after the 2003 season. He then worked for the Ravens, but he was fired as offensive coordinator during the 2006 season by close friend Brian Billick.

Apparently, the friendship has survived the termination. The ultimate irony, then, would be Fassel getting the Redskins' job and hiring Billick as an offensive consultant.
If you read carefully, the bolded part is just a comment from Florio, not part of a report. But it still does not give me a warm a fuzzy feeling. It looks like Fassel will bring in a lot of the Raven's fired coaching staff.

Who would have thought that when Snyder emphasized the need for continuity, that meant promoting Cerrato and dumping the whole coaching staff, which will certainly lead to much higher player turnover.
I guess he meant continuity for the Ravens staff.

Here's JLC's WaPo story from this morning:

Fassel and Redskins Have Met Two Times

Former Giants Coach Is a Top Candidate

By Jason La Canfora

Washington Post Staff Writer

Wednesday, January 23, 2008; Page E01

Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel has interviewed twice for the Washington Redskins' vacant head coaching position, according to league sources, and has become a leading candidate to get the position. Fassel completed his last interview Monday and flew back to his home in Arizona, sources said, and he and Gregg Williams, the Redskins' assistant head coach-defense, are the only people to meet with owner Daniel Snyder more than once.

Fassel, who was on the verge of getting the Redskins' job in 2004 before Snyder hired Joe Gibbs, was impressive in his interviews both at that time and during this round of talks, leading some league sources to expect he could be named coach as soon as today. Williams, who has been strongly endorsed by coaches and players, was seen by agents and executives around the league as the front-runner for the position, but there has been some pause by ownership since he last was interviewed a week ago. In the interim, Fassel has gotten a second interview.

Fassel, 58, an offensive coach with experience mentoring young quarterbacks, is not interviewing for an offensive position with Washington, according to NFL sources, but solely the head coaching job (although it remains possible the team could approach Fassel or other candidates to bolster the staff should Snyder still opt to give Williams, 49, the job). Several NFL sources said they believed former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who worked with Fassel with the Ravens and has ties to newly promoted Redskins executive Vinny Cerrato, would be a prime candidate to replace Williams should Washington end up overhauling its staff. The Redskins have offered the head coaching position to no one at this point, according to the sources, but Snyder has told several candidates that he intends to be as swift and diligent as possible, with a decision possible this week.

Snyder promoted Cerrato to executive vice president/football operations yesterday -- he was formerly vice president of football operations -- in a move the team said largely was an extension of Cerrato's current duties. Cerrato has been by Snyder's side since he purchased the team in 1999, with the exception of the 2001 season, when he was fired. He returned the following year. For the past four seasons, Cerrato, Snyder and Gibbs, who also served as team president, assessed and acquired players. Snyder has said he has no plans to alter that structure, with Snyder and Cerrato working with the next head coach in a similar manner.

"The appointment formalizes the structure the team has operated under in recent years, and is recognition of the valuable role Vinny has played this season," Snyder said in a statement issued by the team, which noted the key role Cerrato is playing in this hiring process as well. The release also stated that Cerrato would "assume responsibility for all aspects of the team's football organization," including the roster, which is almost universally the domain of the coaches. A team official said last night that contrary to the wording of the release, the next head coach will indeed have roster authority. Cerrato declined to comment on the promotion last night, citing a need to be in meetings with Snyder.

Fassel's previous interview with Snyder took place Jan. 11, sources said. He was the previously unidentified candidate, with Williams, Tennessee Titans assistant Jim Schwartz, Indianapolis Colts assistant Ron Meeks and Seattle Seahawks assistant Jim Mora also meeting with Snyder (Mora withdrew his candidacy last week). Snyder and the team are not commenting on the coaching process, though Snyder spoke publicly of the need for continuity and stability in the organization following Gibbs's retirement. Fassel denied meeting with Snyder when reached on his cellphone 10 days ago, and has not returned messages since then. His representatives are not returning calls, either.

Fassel coached the Giants from 1997 to 2003, compiling a 58-53-1 record and leading the team to the Super Bowl in the 2000 season. The Giants reached the playoffs three times under his guidance, but he was let go following a 4-12 finish in 2003. Fassel spent this season broadcasting games for Westwood One Radio, but has fulfilled the stipulations of that contract, according to an industry source, and it has an escape clause that would allow him to pursue a head coaching job.

Fassel worked with star quarterbacks John Elway and Phil Simms earlier in his career -- the development of 2005 first-round pick Jason Campbell is of paramount importance -- and was an offensive assistant with Baltimore from 2004 until October 2006, when he was fired after the Ravens' long-suffering offense remained near the bottom of the league. Fassel was unable to help struggling quarterback Kyle Boller in Baltimore and interviewed for the offensive coordinator job with the Kansas City Chiefs recently, but did not get that position.

Snyder has hired experienced coaches throughout his tenure as owner, often going for bigger names such as Gibbs, Steve Spurrier or Marty Schottenheimer. Williams has previous head coaching experience as well, going 17-31 in three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, and has led Washington to a top 10 defense in three of his four seasons here. Gibbs has endorsed Williams privately, sources said, but is not a major part of this process with Snyder and Cerrato handling the sessions.

Williams does not have a close relationship with Cerrato, seen as some around the league as a potential factor, and Snyder met with Williams on four occasions, gauging their ability to coexist as well as going over football issues. Most of Washington's coaches currently are scouting at the Senior Bowl in Alabama -- Williams and assistant head coach-offense Joe Bugel are among those not in Mobile -- and coaches have not been briefed about the hiring search since Gibbs announced his retirement at a staff meeting two weeks ago. According to team sources, that is a cause of growing consternation for coaches, many of whom know their job security is tied to Williams being promoted. Cerrato originally was scheduled to be among the contingent at the Senior Bowl but pulled out at the last minute when a second interview with Fassel was arranged, sources said.
