****OFFICIAL**** 2008 Washington Redskins Off Season Thread! (1 Viewer)

The late start to the process means the session will resume today and probably will delay any announcement of a new coach until Friday, 31 days after Joe Gibbs retired for the second time.

Spagnuolo is the sixth candidate to interview for the job. Snyder stalled the search nearly two weeks ago so he could interview Spagnuolo.

"He's been waiting for him ever since the Giants beat Dallas, when he took care of the Cowboys with basically a makeshift secondary," a league source said

PFT thinks this may just be another coach trying to raise his present salary with his present team by interviewing with the Redskins.

POSTED 8:00 a.m. EST, February 6, 2008SPAGS USING 'SKINS FOR LEVERAGE?Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is interested in the head-coaching job in Washington. And if it means getting a big raise in our current job, we'd be interested, too.David Elfin and Ryan O'Halloran of the Washington Times report that the Giants are preparing a contract offer that would include "a substantial pay raise" for Spagnuolo, who spent one year running the New York defense after eight years with the Eagles. Prior to that, Spagnuolo worked for a variety of colleges, with the exception of a one-year stint in Barcelona of the defunct NFL Europe (or whatever it was called in 1992).Our take? Spags will be next year's Jason Garrett, if the Giants don't get blown off of the field in 2008. So why not wait to pick a job later instead of taking the last job left in the current hiring cycle? The deciding factor could be cash. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder might be willing to pay Spagnuolo more of it than he could reasonably expect to make a year from now. But control could be a big factor, too. In Washington, Vinny Cerrato is entrenched as the personnel chief and the coaching staff already has been hired for whoever gets the job next. Through it all, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that Jim Fassel is still the favorite for the gig, and we agree. In our view, the entire exercise of interviewing other candidates is aimed at allowing Snyder and Cerrato to claim that the organization performed its due diligence before deciding that the otherwise disregarded Fassel is the right man for the job.

Nothing more than speculation that accompanies every FA player or prospective coaching hire with the Redskins.

True, in that there's nothing specific about Spagnuolo in the speculation. But it does happen: Mora got a raise and promise of a promotion out of negotiating with the Redskins. The Giants are working on a raise for Spagnuolo.

Good news about Tyer, Rogers, and Campbell:

Director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer, who has been with the Redskins for more than 30 years, said he would return for another season. Tyer said cornerback Carlos Rogers, who underwent reconstructive knee surgery last season, had taken a positive turn in his rehabilitation in the last week. Prior to that there were serious concerns about Rogers's rate of recovery. Starting quarterback Jason Campbell, whose season ended with a dislocated kneecap, is now fully recovered and passed his exit physical, Tyer said.

As of 2:15, in real time, as I write this, league sources say that Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo is still in town interviewing for the Redskins head coaching job at owner Daniel Snyder's mansion. The sides began talking face-to-face last evening and Spagnuolo spent the night in a guest house on Snyder's property, as expected. The interview could continue for a while if necessary, as neither side has a pressing need to do anything else at this point.Things are moving well and harmonious, sources said, and several sources close to the candidates believe that Snyder could make a decision tonight and begin the negotiating process, with a press conference possible Thursday or Friday. A source close to Steve Mariucci said today that the coach remains in the mix, and was given a courtesy phone call, while sources close to Jim Fassel, Spagnuolo and Ron Meeks said they do not believe Mariucci to be as much of a threat as the other candidates.Until Snyder makes up his mind, no one will know for sure.

Hey, don't forget, there's a Wizards game tonight. Don't be surprised to see Danny and Spags at Verizon Center. I'll wager that Dan doesn't let Spags leave town without his signature on a contract. Kind of like Don Corleone's offer to the Johnny Fontane's bandleader, either your signature or your brains will be on this contract in 10 seconds. It's an offer you can't refuse.

If Snyder makes a decision tonight, wouldn't you think that it has to be Spags? Would Snyder really shrug off Spags as he leaves his house and hire Fassel immediately. Here Snyder waited almost 2 weeks just to interview this guy after he was about to hire Fassel. Maybe I am naive, but I just don't see that. Then again, I guess nothing would shock me at this point.

Who's to say that the decision hasn't already been made and that what Spags and Danny are talking about now is the deal itself. Isn't that how they sign free agent players? Is the agent at La Casa d'Snyder?

 Spags would be a good hire - I'd actually come out of this process happy (read "relieved") as he's the kind of guy that you hire to try to build a strong ten-year run around. If he thinks he can live with the staff pre-hired for him, then I'll defer to his better judgment.

Another long interview [Ryan O'Halloran]

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is still interviewing for the Redskins vacant head coaching job at owner Dan Snyder's house in Potomac, a league source confirmed.

The source said the group met for 8 or 9 hours Tuesday night and started talking again this morning around 8 a.m.

One of Gregg Williams' interviews last month lasted nearly 12 hours.

Today marks the four-week mark of the search, which has included interviews with seven candidates. Some research about coordinators who get their first head coaching job -- they generally sign a four- or five-year contract worth $2 to $2.5 million per season.

I'll have more details when/if they become available although it appears my hope for a Thursday press conference is disappearing with every passing hour.

A source just chimed into David Elfin and said Spagnuolo, Snyder and Cerrato are still meeting as of 5:30 p.m.

UPDATE: 7:17 p.m.

ESPN is reporting that the interview has shifted from Snyder's house to Redskin Park. I take that as a sign that the interview is going well -- well enough that Spagnuolo wanted to check out the digs before going back to New Jersey.

---------------------

Well, it's a first time that they went from the house to the Park. Gentlemen, that might just be the icing on the cake!

Spags and Williams

As of this moment - 8 pm. - Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo remains in meetings with owner Daniel Snyder about Washington's head coaching vacancy. Things continue to move along and sources close to several candidates believe Snyder will make a decision tonight, with Spagnuolo and Jim Fassel the most likely choices.

Gregg Williams, former assistant head coach - defense, was also announced as Jacksonville's new defensive coordinator today, and released this statement through the Jaguars about his four years in the Redskins organization:

"The last four years, being a part of the Redskins organization was a great experience," Williams added. "I appreciate the process that Mr. Snyder and Vinny Cerrato allowed me to participate in. It was the most thorough process I've been involved in in the NFL. I thank the Redskins fans and the organization for allowing me to be a part of their family. It was a dream come true to work for a Hall of Fame coach like Joe Gibbs.

"I will be able to utilize a lot of great learning experiences, and Joe Gibbs is not only a Hall of Fame coach but even a better person. I appreciate all the opportunities that Dan Snyder and the Redskins family allowed me to be a part of and I take with me many fond memories from my time in Washington."

Latest from the Times..

All's quiet on the Ashburn front [Ryan O'Halloran]I dashed out to Redskin Park in lovely Ashburn, only to find . . . nothing as of 7:50 p.m.No other media. No limo.No car in Dan Snyder's spot.Just a security guard in the media room watching "Jeopardy."ESPN reported last hour that the Steve Spagnuolo interview had shifted from Snyder's home in Potomac to Redskin Park. As of now, that doesn't appear to be the case.I'm in it for the medium haul (definitely not the long haul) and will check in later.

Bram has gone seriously downhill. Really, I used to like the guy when he was on WTEM. He seemed at that time to have decent connections with players and reported things straight. Since he's gotten married, had a kid, and gone to work for the Redskins he's gotten way too lapdog-gy to suit me.

He let Gregg dangle on the hook before giving him his walking papers for how long again? I wouldn't put anything past Snyder at this point. If Spags is the man though, I suspect he'll be the HC before he leaves town. If he leaves town without a deal I think the needle points back to Fassel again, at which point who knows how long he'll string him along. I wouldn't rule out Robiskie being named interim head coach until after mini camp.

Tomorrow morning's article for the Washington Post is already up on the website:

New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Washington Redskins management continued to discuss the team's head coaching vacancy last night, his second day of meetings with owner Daniel Snyder. Spagnuolo spent Tuesday night and all of yesterday with Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, the executive vice president-football operations, and is a strong contender for the job, sources said.

Channel 9 in DC supposedly reported on the 11 o'clock news that Spagnuolo may be staying for another sleepover another night.

I'm thinking that if talks have gone on this long and he's still here, that he's getting hired.

Late Nite Update

Here's what we got for now ... Still waiting to hear back from some people so will post thru the nite if need be.

New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo remained deep in talks with the Redskins regarding the team's head vacancy last night, his second day of meetings with owner Daniel Snyder. Spagnuolo spent Tuesday night and all of Wednesday with Snyder and executive vice president Vinny Cerrato.

Jim Fassel, who was nearly given the job two weeks ago, was also a finalist and was awaiting word from the team on a decision. League sources said that Fassel, former San Francisco Coach Steve Mariucci and Indianapolis defensive coordinator Ron Meeks anticipated that Snyder could contact them late last night with his decision as well, with the process winding down a month after Joe Gibbs resigned. (As of 1 a.m. those candidates had not heard from the team, league sources said).

Fassel remained hopeful and believed that he and Spagnuolo were the leading candidates, league sources said, while sources close to Spagnuolo said the coach, who led New York's defense in its stunning Super Bowl defeat of New England, was very enthused about his sessions with the team. League sources said Meeks and Mariucci were less optimistic about their chances and they sensed the decision would likely come down to Fassel or Spagnuolo.

The Redskins have most of their coaching staff in place and already selected new offensive and defensive coordinators before a head coach, an unusual situation but not a deterrent to the final candidates. The Giants do not want to lose Spagnuolo and were working on a counter-proposal to enhance his contract with them, league sources said.

Redskins Notes: The Redskins began creating cap space by renegotiating the contracts of guard Randy Thomas and end Andre Carter, league sources said. The team entered the off season $20 million over the 2008 salary cap and could restructure 12 contracts or more.

Either that or they're waterboarding him. That poor, poor man.

The Wrong Job for the Man

By Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Fresh off a Super Bowl win, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo might want to wait until another head coaching job pops up.

If Steve Spagnuolo's friends really care about him, they'll advise him not to go near the Redskins job. "Run," they'll tell him. "Run away, now, as fast as you can." They'll tell him that in the New York Giants he has wise owners and a principled general manager who treat their people right. They'll tell him that Daniel Snyder isn't really looking for a head coach, he just wants to hire another butler.

It's unclear how seriously Spagnuolo, the Giants' defensive coordinator still flushed from his Super Bowl triumph, is being considered for the Redskins' head coaching position. All we know is that Spagnuolo is the latest victim of those interminable, cigar-filled, 20-hour interviews. But frankly, if there's any considering to be done, it's Spagnuolo who should be doing it. He's the one who should carefully size up Snyder, not vice versa. A job offer from Snyder isn't exactly a shortcut to head coaching success. Actually, it's been known to set careers back years.

If Spagnuolo's friends care about him, they'll spare him that old saw, "Dan Snyder just wants to win." No, he doesn't. He just wants to run things. If Snyder really wanted to win, he'd have gone after a different guy in the Giants' organization years ago: General Manager Jerry Reese. Spagnuolo is the hot, exciting hire of the day, but Reese was the bigger figure in the Giants' success, though in a more mundane and less visible way. As usual, Snyder's impressed by all the wrong things.

The difference between the Giants and the Redskins at this moment is striking. The divisional cousins split their regular season games, and both fought for wild-card playoff berths. Yet they couldn't be more dissimilar when it comes to good judgment. The Giants reflect how close, and yet how far, the Redskins really are from being a successful franchise.

A year ago, Giants Coach Tom Coughlin was on the brink of being fired despite getting the team to the playoffs twice. Veteran players were frustrated. There were doubts about whether quarterback Eli Manning would fulfill his promise.

What did owners John Mara and Steve Tisch do? They trusted the counsel of Reese, the first-year GM they had promoted after 12-plus years of service in the personnel department.

Reese, in turn, trusted Coughlin enough to give him a one-year contract extension. He stood by Manning. And he refused to make wholesale roster changes. "It wasn't the right thing to do," he said. "The right thing to do was take care of personnel already on the roster."

Instead, Reese concentrated on the draft, and showed what a knowledgeable personnel man with an expert eye can do for a team. All eight of the rookies he selected would contribute to the Giants' Super Bowl run. Wide receiver Steve Smith in the second round from Southern California? Okay, that was a pretty easy pick. Not so easy were tight end Kevin Boss from Western Oregon in the fifth round, or running back Ahmad Bradshaw from Marshall in the seventh. Each made huge plays in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. Then there was third-rounder Jay Alford from Penn State, whose spearing sack of Tom Brady with 25 seconds left all but cinched the victory. And those were just the stars of the class.

A total of 23 players drafted by Reese over the last few years are on the Giants' roster -- nearly half the team. David Tyree, who merely made one of the biggest catches in Super Bowl history, was a sixth-round pick in 2003. Two of the defensive linemen who made Spagnuolo look so brilliant, Justin Tuck (Notre Dame, third round, 2005) and Osi Umenyiora (Troy, second round, 2003), also were his picks.

Spagnuolo should consider all of that carefully, and then ask himself some questions:

Do you think for a moment Snyder would have retained Coughlin last year? (No. He would have fired him.)

Do you think Snyder would have stuck by Manning after three mediocre seasons? (No. He'd have traded him.)

Do you think for a moment that Snyder and his surrogate, Executive Vice President-Football Operations Vinny Cerrato, could have found the lower-round rookies who made such critical contributions in the Super Bowl? (Ha.)

If Spagnuolo is smart, he'll stay put with the Giants and learn as much as he can from them about how good upper management operates. Another, better head coaching job will come along in time, one in which his owner doesn't impose his assistant coaches on him, or tell him whom to play at quarterback.

It's a bitter shame to say this, given how much it surely pains local fans, but the truth is that Redskins Park is no place for someone with a bright future. It's too dark and dysfunctional. The phrase "coach killer" comes to mind. No good one, except possibly Joe Gibbs, has had a decent experience under Snyder, not Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier, Al Saunders or Gregg Williams. Which is why the only people who seem to be realistically entertaining the job now are either those desperate to get back in the game, such as Jim Fassel and Steve Mariucci, or climbers looking for their first head coaching office.

There is a consistent, central weakness in the Redskins' organization that no coach can fix. It's Snyder's tycoon mentality, his assumption that he can purchase people and make them do what he wants, and if they displease him, discard them. His paycheck players and presto coaching solutions fail every time. The franchise is based on a series of extravagant bribes, not a dime of which has ever been spent on the qualities that made the Giants into Super Bowl champions, namely good faith, loyalty, patience, unity and, above all, belief in the leadership at the top.

"Believe!" the Giants defenders shouted at their teammates on the sideline as Manning and the offense took the field for the game-winning drive. Everyone believed. Mara and Tisch believed in Reese, who believed in Coughlin, who believed in the players, who believed back.

Who, at this point, believes in Snyder? Run, Spagnuolo. Run, as fast as you can.

Sally Jenkins may write for the WaPo, but she still lives in New York City and she's her father's daughter. She's been a leading Snyder basher for a LONG time, and if truth be told, is strictly an affirmative action hire for the Post to show how enlightened their Sports Department is. Long ago Christine Brennan was the Skins beat reporter for the Post before she got all hung up on figure skating, Title IX and women's sports in general, and the Post has a long tradition of having women sports reporter. Jenkins is the first to actually get a column.

you make a lot of statements, but the only relevant one is #3 - she bashes Snyder. Are your statements meant to discredit her column? Because she basically hits the nail on the head.

Think of the columnist who writes the most negatively, most consistently about the Dallas Cowboys. That's Sally Jenkins to the Redskins. She either writes negative about the team, or she writes about some other subject matter.

Spags departed late last night, without an offer

Steve Spagnuolo left Redskins owner Daniel Snyder's home late on Wednesday night without a contract offer, according to two people familiar with the discussions, and it appears he is leaning towards returning to the Giants for at least another season as defensive coordinator.

Spagnuolo was spending this morning deciding if he wants to be considered for the job, following nearly a full day's worth of talks with Snyder and Redskins vice president of operations Vinny Cerrato. Spagnuolo, who has a new contract on the table from the Giants that will make him one of the highest-paid coordinators in the NFL, flew to Washington, D.C. immediately after the Giants' championship parade and stadium rally on Tuesday evening.

He met with Snyder and Cerrato late into the night, stayed over at a guest house on Snyder's property and resumed talks early Wednesday morning. Those lasted into the night, but Spagnuolo left for his home in New Jersey to discuss the situation with his wife, Maria.

Former Giants coach Jim Fassel is considered the top candidate for the job, along with former 49ers ad Lions coach Steve Mariucci. One of the people familiar with the job search said the Redskins may choose either of the veteran coaches as early as this afternoon.

AM Update

Still waiting on final confirmation on some things, but I heard that Steve Spagnuolo left town late last night - around 1 am - without a contract. One source said he was not offered the job and is talking to the Giants about a new deal there after guiding that defense to a stunning defeat of New England.

Again, I do not have this confirmed yet, but sources who have been spot-on through this entire process are telling me this.

Indications are pointing to Jim Fassel at this point but Dan Snyder has not begun telling the candidates of any decision yet. They all - Ron Meeks, Fassel, Mooch (if you want to throw him in there) - know nothing as of this moment, but that could be changing. And just because Spagnuolo left without a deal - if what I am hearing is true - it would not preclude Snyder from still striking one with him.

But if you held me down right now and made he guess - again, I'm guessing here and not reporting - I'd say Fassel right now.

I guess Zorn did a similar thing and was still hired. Zorn left without a contract, but he probably left with a $ value in mind. He took that back to Seattle and the Seahawks wouldn't match, so Zorn is a Redskin. I guess the same thing could be happening with Spags. At least I hope so.

Welcome to the Fassel era my fellow 'Skins fans. At least this time not many of us should have high hopes of our new coach as we have had with the last few.

someone on ES just said "Spags turns down Redskins per Paul Dottino ESPN Radio NY Staying w/ Giants, salary bump to 2.5 million per year, and assistant head coach."

used again.

Spags To Stay With the Giants

Steve Spagnuolo will remain with the New York Giants and is not a candidate for the Redskins job according to a source with knowledge of the situation. A formal announcement is likely to come later today, with a new three-year deal from the Giants on its way, too.

Spagnuolo returned to the New York area this morning. Jim Fassel was seen by many as the frontrunner to get this job, with Spagnuolo emerging late. It would appear to be headed that way now.

maybe spags read sally and agreed...

not to worry skin fans....right around the time the team starts to learn the new coaches and system...out the door they will go...wash, rinse....repeat

on a side note...we dont have it much better in dallas with jj...good luck with whomever you get

Not surprisingly, a pure leverage play by Spags. Good for him.

Time to brace for Coach Fassel, who obviously hasn't an ounce of self-respect after being strung along for weeks and yet still sits obediently by Danny's dinner table waiting for scraps of Chef Boyardee from the Boy Blunder. Woo-hoo!
