****OFFICIAL**** 2008 Washington Redskins Off Season Thread! (1 Viewer)

Let me add this:

As a DraftNik, I LIKE all 3 Players...A LOT.

It's just that I'm a fan of taking a 'needs based' approach to Drafting.

I'm also quite intractable in my opinion that the Redskins have enough talent at the skill positions to generate a more than adequate Offense, and that the pieces they need can be found cheaply between now and Training Camp.

There's still plenty of quality depth available in this Draft, but the best players at the Redskins 'Top 3' Areas of Need have left the building, and with Day 1 in the books, we remain woefully thin at O-Line, D-Line and Secondary - and LineBacker ain't nothin' to write home about either.

:sigh:

S.Moss

Randall El

Thomas

Kelley

Cooley

F.Davis

Portis

J.Campbell

that's 8 of 11 offensive starters

so we line up a center man and 2 guards

BRILLIANCE

I don't think you can just go 'needs based' or BPA. You have to meld the two together. The Redskins today were a perfect example, I think they went BPA and like fatness says above the picks were great value picks....just not all for the same team.

...and now the Kiss of Death - Kiper just fully endorsed the Redskins' Day 1 Selections.Oh, joy.
I saw that. To be fair, I think the network just tells them "here's a list of X teams, pick one and defend it" and he got stuck with Washington. I got the impression that Kiper was collecting his thoughts about the Redskins while he was talking, and had not thought it out much before.

I think they actually did a good job for once with the exception of Davis the TE. They didn't need him but they needed a big WR and since Thomas and Kelly are not sure things, grabbing both was not a bad idea. Cambell should excel with this group. No reason he can't post 25 TDs.

...and we're not out of the woods yet in regards to Chad Johnson......from NFL.com's Analysis Write-Up of Malcolm Kelly:.........................................Could be a perfect fit in Cincinnati with Carson Palmer if Cincinnati trades Chad Johnson.
The Redskins are not done chasing Chad Johnson. I'm OK with that; I'd rather have him than Malcolm Kelly.Back to their picks: Thomas was a steal as a I said earlier. He could have gone as high as 1.11. Best WR in the draft. Fred Davis seems like an OK pick IF he was not injured. But he is, and could not complete his workouts. The Skins spent so much time studying Merling, and finally backed off on drafting him due to concerns about his sports hernia healing. Then they drafted an injured TE with whom they never even visited. It seems irresponsible to spend a 2nd round pick that way. Last pick of the 3rd round maybe, not not a 2nd round pick.Kelly developed concerns about his whining and his speed after the college season was over, but that does not negate the fact that he was a very good college WR and initially was projected in the 1st round. This does not seem like a reach at all for the Redskins. But taken together, it seems to me the Davis pick was a reach that should have been used on line help. And that the Kelly pick, while value at that spot, was not the clear-cut correct thing to do considering their need for line help on both sides. I would guess that today they will stock up on linemen and linebackers. If they reach for a QB or draft another WR, well, they'll seem a bit foolish.

From Rotoworld, about Fred Davis.

Fred Davis-TE- Redskins Feb. 21 - 6:43 pm et

Southern Cal TE Fred Davis will not run the 40-yard dash at the Combine due to a knee injury.

Davis, Mike Mayock's top tight end prospect, was projected to run in the 4.7s. Davis led the Trojans in receiving last season and has a chance to be a late first-round draft pick. He was a participant in the Senior Bowl.
Fred Davis-TE- Redskins Feb. 23 - 9:28 am et

If the Titans fail in their efforts to sign free agent Alge Crumpler, USC TE Fred Davis "could definitely be in play."

Says Titans supervisor of college scouting, C.O. Brocato, "I think he'd fit in pretty good with us. I don't see any reason why he shouldn't." Davis could be the first tight end off the board in April, although John Carlson and Martellus Bennett should also make a run for that position.
Fred Davis-TE- Redskins Apr. 2 - 6:43 pm et

USC TE Fred Davis ran a disappointing forty at the Trojans' Pro Day Wednesday, timing in the 4.7s.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock said Davis also struggled to finish his change-of-direction drills and did not appear fluid. Davis relied on his vertical skills during a breakout senior campaign, so the poor workout may send up a red flag. It was the first time Davis (knee) has worked out this offseason.
Fred Davis-TE- Redskins Apr. 26 - 7:52 pm et

Redskins selected Southern Cal TE Fred Davis with the No. 48 overall pick in the 2008 draft.

Definitely not a need-based selection with Pro Bowler Chris Cooley already in the building. Davis led the Trojans in receiving as a senior (62-881-14.2-8 TDs), but was often hidden when Pete Carroll wanted a blocking tight end in. Apparently Washington will use more two-TE sets under Jim Zorn. Davis' addition could cut into Cooley's numbers a bit. Apr. 26 - 7:52 pm et
Toledo Blade article
Davis was projected to be selected somewhere in the second round. He was the third tight end selected behind Purdue's Dustin Keller and Notre Dame's John Carlson. Rivals.com had listed him as the second-best tight end prospect behind Carlson, who was taken by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round with the 38th pick. Keller was the first tight end taken when the New York Jets picked him the first round at No. 30.
The Redskins had Davis graded in the first round. Several scouting reports I read this morning compared him to Cooley ---- not much of a blocker on D-linemen, but can get open and has good hands.

Portis Gets Restructured DealThe Redskins have guaranteed the next two seasons of running back Clinton Portis's contract, according to league sources, after restructuring his contract again this offseason and giving him a new $9.32 million signing bonus to lower his cap figure. Portis is guaranteed $15 million through the 2010 season (though not all of his 2010 salary is guaranteed), a significant investment in a 26-year-old running back who has struggled through injuries and conditioning issues. . . .The Redskins have issued roughly $48 million in roster and option bonuses to players on the roster in 2008, according to NFL Management Council reports. Their signing-bonus spending is second-most in the league despite the team not investing any bonus money on outside free agents.

Fatness...I heard Kiper praise Cerrato as a great evaluator of college talent within the week leading up to the draft. One of the reasons I watched Mayock all day and stayed away from ESPN. Maybe Cerrato has nude picks of Kiper.

Chad Rinehart

However, there are still concerns about his ability to make the substantial jump to the NFL and he needs to improve his footwork as well as his hand placement so he projects as a late fourth round pick or early fifth round pick.

:lmao:

A lineman, Eureka!

The Skins take guard Chad Rinehart, a guard out of Northern Iowa, with their third round pick. It's a position of significant need with not much depth at guard and both starters dealing with injuries (Kendall has arthritic knees; Randy Thomas is coming off another season-ending surgery).

Rinehart is plenty big and could possibly play some tackle, too. He started at left tackle last season. Joe Bugel was prizing versatility in his linemen and this kid could provide it.

Will be interesting to see if they come back around in the draft and take more of a pure center, though that might be somethign they address with a college free agent.

Schefter just said we got a 5th and a 6th for trading down.
That's wrong (according to LaCanfora's blog, and he posted it before it hit the TV). We got a (lower) 4th and a 5th. Here's my prediction:4th round: DT5th round: QB6th and 7th rounds: a bunch of large eager guys

Skins Making Another Trade - I Like It

Skins send the 103rd pick to Tennesse for the 124th and 157th picks.

Skins did not previously have a 5th round pick, so now they get one. Guessing they may target a a QB there, now that they have that pick. Gotta think they look DL with the 4th round pick and there's some good ones still on the board.

we definitely have a lot of need at depth, I'm all for trading down.

what the hell is going on? NFL.com says we picked William Hayes?

I'm in my office without a digital box so I'm forced to watch ESPN. ESPN's day two coverage has always been abysmal.

Yeah, that's what they say all right: LinkSomebody is wrong. I'm guessing that NFL.com is having trouble keeping up.

NFL.com also lists Hayes' height as on the short side

Code:
[+]4 (103) Tennessee Titans (From Falcons through Redskins) Hayes, William DE 0'0" Winston-Salem State

Skins Up Again

You'd tend to think they might look at the defensive side of the ball here.

The D Line and secondary are areas of need. Maybe high for Kareem Moore, but more safeties are going off the board. Seems high for Marcus Dixon, too. Maybe the DL Guion could be intriguing here. The LB from Maryland, Henderson, is still there too.

Also C/G Steve Forrest still on the board, the last of the better centers in this draft. But that would mean 5-for-5 on offense.

My gut is they go D Line here one way or the other.

Justin Tryon, CB, is the pick

Link
A 5'9" CB :lmao:
Yeah, CB's that small have never been successful in the NFL. Great insight.
Yeah, that disastrous Darrell Green pick in '83 should have taught the Skins not to take a chance on short CBs. Too much negativity in Redskins Nation these days, on this board and others, IMO. I'm not a big fan of Cerrato (or Snyder) but I like the 2 WRs they took and I definitely see a real need to improve the passing game, especially in the red zone. We won't know how well they really did until 2-3 years down the road, but this seems like a decent draft so far, assuming they address both lines with their remaining picks and with UFAs (where they always seem to find an undrafted gem). I understand the skepticism of Cerrato and Snyder but I think we need to rein in the doomsaying a little bit.
