****OFFICIAL 2008 Washington Redskins Thread**** (1 Viewer)

I had hopes for the game last night. But all I saw was that the 'skins deep down are still in the mediocre stage. I'll be honest, as tough as the NFC East is and with everyone playing well except the Cowboys, who will have Romo back after the bye, I could see the 'skins ending up at the bottom of the division by season's end. I hope I'm wrong, but last night made me feel like they aren't there yet.

I don't think we should put too much blame on Zorn either, but ironic that his 2 worst games this year, by far, were on Monday and Thursday opening night. I wonder if he gets a little nervous/conservative because he's on a national stage. Still, no Skins fan should complain at a 6-3 start, especially when they have only lost 1 game in the division. And Santana seemed to be okay, which is also huge for us moving forward. This bye has come at a great time.

And if Portis can start getting this involved in the passing game, not only will he be hands down the best RB in the NFL, but he'll be the best FF RB too (if he's not already) :)

Eh, I dunno...I think you guys may be a little too harsh on playcalling and not harsh enough on the players from time to time. Theres not too many plays that work when you the other team consistently wins the battle in the trenches.
Of course it's not just Zorn, the players have to play. A perfect example of the difference was when PIT started to go down field. Yes, they had a few incomplete passes, but the 40 yard pass interference call was HUGE. That only happens when you attempt big plays. The interference was as good as a completetion, but better yet started to open up the offense/play calling as the 'Skins had to adjust accordingly. Up until that point, it was more of a defensive chess match and playing field possesion game. Our average start position was on the PIT side of the field for the first half and we had only 6 pts to show for it.Point being, we kept playing it safe the entire game and never took a chance. No deep passes, no end arounds, or anything else other than 5 yard passes and running it up the gut. We NEVER opened it up and that is very dissappointing IMO.On an other note, our blitzing was awful too. PIT's O-Line is terrible and we made them look better than should be. We got burned on several blitzes and even though we sent 7 players in....nobody came close to hitting the QB. They had a few sacks, but the blitz packages didn't fare so well.I thought that our CB's (Carlos and Fred) played well, other than Carlos' coverage on the Holmes TD. They both were flying around and Fred made several flying type tackles. Again, very pleased with Horton and his play has been outstanding. I'm excited to think about his prospect for us as he gets more experience under his belt.As far as our season so far, I'm happy and look forward to continuing this surge. 6-3 is nothing to be down about at all. Here's hoping that the bye week gets us rested up and ready to come out firing in week 11 vs. DAL.

after getting served up a big ol' can of whoop ###, I can't help but lament 3 wasted 2nd round picks that would have been better spent on big uglies - the kind Pitt seems to manufacture - and not on tender foots (#12) or guys who are so raw that they can't even run a simply fly pattern (#11). and I can't even label #86 cuz I've not seen him on the field but a few times.

Pittsburgh's offensive line is one of its worst in years. Also, a major problem for the 'Skins was that while Moss played, he wasn't 100% and basically wasn't on the field from the middle of the 2nd quarter onward. Their passing game hugely contracts when he's not in there. Now, they need a rookie WR to step up and fill that void and Thomas couldn't do that last night, but the fact is that their draft did address an area of need in the 2nd round. They need more passing options than just Moss at WR.

Rookie WR's can be very frustrating for every team. Just remember that rookie WR's rarely tend to show any real glimpses their first year or two. A good recent example is Braylon Edwards, who didn't start off very well either. Now, many place him in the top 10, if not top 5 WR's in the NFL. It's hard, especially when the team needs someone to step up, but rookie WR's and DL's usually take 3 years to "get it" and perform.I'd point out that C. Horton in the 7th round is encouraging in their draft ability, IF they truly saw that talent in him. If it was one of those, he's the best Saftey on the board and we need depth type decision, then we just got lucky. I hope or want to believe that its the former and not the latter.

Week 11.....
:drive:The stakes for a game at that time of the season couldn't be higher for both teams IMHO. The winner should have the inside track for a wild card berth, and will also enjoy some momentum; the loser is going to be on a two-game losing streak and feeling like it's in a hole. That's the way it should be for November Redskins-Cowboys games.

Not one of our finest.

Dallas fan here. i, for one, thought the skins played pretty good. the steelers D was just the best unit on the field last nite.

as a currently very pessimistic Cowboys fan, i'm worried about how much punishment Romo is gonna take IF our line doesnt play better. i think our D has turned the corner, but that O-line needs to step it up big time. and you guys have some good talent on D.

Yeah, the Steelers D owned. That wasn't even a contest. I can only hope that Zorn and Co. use that as another wakeup call like they did the loss to the Giants, because I saw little adjustment from them, which was disheartening. That said, as poorly as the Dallas D-line has played, PIT's is worse, and so much so that it actually looked like the 'Skins had a good pass rush at times. It's going to be something we both watch I guess. This is going to be a very important matchup for both teams week 11, that's for sure.

steelers in home whites?

So what do we do now at RT?

A) Keep doing what we've been doing since Jansen stepped in. The Pittsburgh game was bad, but, hey, we don't have to play Pittsburgh again.

B) Give Jansen more help with a TE or RB.

C) Go back to Heyer.

D) Other.

If both Samuels and Heyer are completely healthy for the Dallas game, my gut says they go back to Heyer, which I think is the right move. I think Jansen has been serviceable, at best, and that Heyer gives the offense the best chance to succeed, overall.

Sean Taylor to be inducted into the Redskins Ring of Fame.

The late Sean Taylor will be inducted into the Redskins’ Ring of Fame at FedExField in a ceremony prior to the Redskins-New York Giants game on Nov. 30.

It will be the Redskins’ first game following the anniversary of Taylor’s tragic death at the age of 24, which occurred on Nov. 27 of last year in Miami.

“It’s appropriate that Sean joins our Ring of Fame after a stellar career cut short far too soon,” Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder said. “His life touched so many of us in such deep and lasting ways. His presence is all around us, in our organization and among our fans.”

Executive Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato added: “Sean was developing into one of the best to ever play the safety position, as well as becoming a role model to those who knew him. He still touches us every day in some way on and off the field.”

Taylor will be the 43rd member admitted into the Ring of Fame, which honors those who have made distinguished contributions to the team. He is the first since Gary Clark entered the Ring of Fame on Oct. 7, 2007.

The ceremony will feature a tribute and messages from former teammates as well as the presentation of a commemorative plaque to members of Taylor’s family.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early at FedExField for the pre-game ceremony. Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET.

With his combination of size, speed, athleticism, ferocity and instincts, Taylor was one of the most unique and dynamic athletes the game has ever seen, despite playing less than four seasons.

He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection after the Redskins made him the fifth pick of the 2004 NFL draft following an All-American career at the University of Miami.

Agreed, it will be fun, well for one team that is.

The Washington Redskins are among the teams free agent cornerback DeAngelo Hall is considering after clearing waivers yesterday, according to his agent, Joe Segal.
Make this happen Synder.He's "fast"
he'd be a perfect stop gap for Dallas until PacMaam returns

Talent wise, signing Hall is a no brainer. But can the Redskins keep him in line? Also, showing interest could be a ploy to drive the price up, since Dallas is probably interested in Hall too.

This type of signing screams Jerruh to me at this point in time. Hall's a big name, former high draft pick, with character questions, and he can be gotten for a relatively cheap price. Five years ago the 'Skins would have been in the conversation too, but I don't see it, especially given that the Cowboys' need at CB seems much greater right now even with Shawn Springs' injury.

Well we signed him.....Let's see how it works out, if he's kept in as a nickel/dime back I think it will be ok.

:sigh:If he can keep his mouth shut and play the role of the #4 CB, things might be OK. I have no confidence that he can keep his attitude and ego in check, though.

If this does work out, huge, huge props need to go out to the locker room leaders. As of now, I'm predicting a :goodposting: of Brandon Lloyd-like proportions.

Well the locker room leaders are in place. Hopefully being cut mid-season and then picked up as a #4CB humbles him a bit. And at least you are predicting Brandon Lloyd-like proportions, and not Adam Archuletta-like porportions.

JLC says they could put him in the lineup and move Springs to safety. I am not totally opposed to such a move, although I don't understand the bizarre three-safety arrangement he seems to be proposing (I assume Horton stays in the lineup regardless).I don't see a downside here. It's a one-year deal and he fills a need with Springs clearly hobbled. He's young and immensely talented, and if he's ever gonna succeed, this would be the environment (hometown team, young, fun but still stern coach, winning squad).

Plus when you consider that the Cowboys really needed CB depth after Pac-Man blew up but opted for the flashy WR signing instead, it's all the sweeter. All that with no real risk.

If he doesn't blow (hypothetical, because he does) and isn't a locker room cancer (another hypothetical, because he's been reviled by two teams in less than one year), then why did Oakland get rid of him?

I don't completely agree with the bolded part, but I'm with you on the rest. The 'Skins have signed someone that couldn't keep a roster spot on the Raiders roster. :X Hall has million dollar talent, but a 10 cent head.

Not looking forward to this nonsense.

Whose roster spot does he take?
Probably won't find out until tomorrow, according to JLC. They made the move too early to be sticking Kelly on IR, I'm assuming. Maybe SA, if Betts is supposed to be back? Or Tryon, with the hopes he clears waivers and can get signed to the practice squad? Just some guesses.

Yeah, I think JLC is just regurgitating something that has been brought up before without looking at the current situation. Horton is excelling as the SS, and Landry is an excellent FS. It doesn't help the team to bring Horton off the field (which would happen if Landry was SS and Springs was FS). If Springs is the FS, it's because Landry is hurt.

Please let it be Leigh Torrance!
I assume it will be him or Tryon. At least Torrence gets on the field some.I say make Hall CB4 and put him on punt returns.
Torrence got burned badly on the last play of the Rams loss, but otherwise has greatly improved over last year. Tryon doesn't look like he could cover a highschool receiver

Not to mention Springs is arguably their best CB. I know Rogers has been playing well, but I'm not ready to say he's better than Springs.

This makes the most sense. Tryon simply can't be a hot commodity as an NFL FA right now.

JLC mentions Mike Green, too. I had forgotten about him. Although, if S depth is the problem JLC keeps making it out to be (having to move Springs to S) I don't see the sense in releasing Green.

Torrence was waived to make room for Hall
Wow. This makes me like the Hall signing even less. Is Hall going to play teams? My guess is he's too big a prima donna to contribute the way Torrence did.According to JLC, the locker room doesn't like Torrence being released.
I don't like it either :hot: . seems like they based their decision on the comments section of the wash post web site  . torrence - the next walt harris?

A number of people are saying this is a low risk signing (including in this thread) but the more I hear, the worse I feel about it.

Arthur Blank says Hall needs to grow up.

On the way to the to the airport in Tampa, I heard a very interesting clip of an interview with Falcons owner Arthur Blank on Sirius NFL Radio.

Blank was asked about former Atlanta cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who was cut by the Raiders and picked up by the Redskins this week.

"I think he needs to grow up,'' Blank said.

Give Blank a ton of credit for flat-out stating the truth. Hall, a former first-round pick by the Falcons, forced his way out of Atlanta and Oakland. Sometimes, Hall's emotions spilled out unproductively on the field. More often, though, his words and actions in the locker room and off the field prevented him from ever reaching his massive potential.

Blank went on to mention Hall's great physical talents, but said the cornerback needs to learn to play within a system.
I'm not sure the middle of a season, when your right in the thick of the playoff race, is a good time to be experimenting with a guy like Hall. If this had happened during off or pre season, I wouldn't mind it so much. Now seems like such bad timing.

What’s just as notable as the team cornerback DeAngelo Hall chose are the ones he didn’t. Hall heard from Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, each of whom tried to persuade the former Raiders cornerback to sign with his respective team.

(Random question: If Hall was such a bad influence, why did two of the most respected defensive-minded head coaches in the game pursue him the way they did?)

Ultimately, the Redskins offered something no other team could: the chance to play in his backyard. Hall is from Virginia and played college football at Virginia Tech. The Redskins asked Hall, “Why’d you pick Virginia Tech when you could have gone to any school in the country?” And Hall told them because he wanted to be close to home. Now, after agreeing to a one-year, pro-rated $1 million deal with the Redskins that will pay him $492,000 for finishing the season in Washington, Hall will be close to home. He is scheduled to arrive in Washington on Friday night, undergo a physical then and sign his contract.

The Redskins also promised Hall they would not slap their franchise tag on him after this season but, with their tight salary-cap situation in 2009, they could not afford to do that anyway. Still, the two sides already have discussed the possibility of signing a long-term agreement and if the engagement works out, the marriage always could be consummated.
