What do you guys predict for the WR corps?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Jackson, Floyd, Naanee, and Washington are all free agents. I'm expecting Jackson will be allowed to walk or will be franchised and traded (if that option exists). I'm expecting Naanee and Washington will be allowed to walk and Davis will be cut. I'm assuming there won't be a big market for Floyd at 30 and with his injury history, so I'm guessing the Chargers resign him to keep an experienced starter.

That leaves Ajirotutu, Crayton, and Brown. Who am I missing? If that is how it turns out, would you expect Floyd and Ajirotutu to start?

Pick Analysis: A.J. Smith is one of the best evaluators in the business, and he might have landed one of the most talented interior defenders in draft. Liuget has the potential to play multiple positions along the Chargers' front with his outstanding blend of size, strength and power. He is a capable run defender with the potential to be an impact pass rusher as well.

Round 2, Pick 18 (50) Marcus Gilchrist DB 5'10" 195 Clemson 6.2 Video

Pick Analysis: The Chargers add a versatile secondary defender with the selection of Gilchrist. He has the ability to play corner or safety in their scheme and adds tremendous depth to their back end. He should be an immediate contributor as a sub-package defender.

Round 2, Pick 29 (61) (From Jets) Jonas Mouton LB 6'1" 239 Michigan 4.7 Video

Pick Analysis: The Chargers' special teams will certainly benefit from the addition of Mouton. He is one of the most athletic defenders in the draft, and his combination of speed and strength will upgrade their kicking units. He might eventually find a role as an every-down player, but expect him to make an immediate contribution as a special teamer.

Round 3, Pick 18 (82) Vincent Brown WR 5'11" 187 San Diego St. 5.6 Video

Pick Analysis: The former Aztec is a polished receiver with outstanding hands and ball skills. He catches the ball as well as any receiver in the draft but lacks the speed to separate from tight coverage. However, he has the skills to be an effective slot receiver with the potential to be a solid third or fourth receiver in the lineup.

Round 3, Pick 25 (89) (From Seahawks) Shareece Wright DB 5'11" 185 USC 6.6 Video

Pick Analysis: Wright was regarded as one of the sleepers at the position prior to suffering an injury at his pro day. However, the Chargers are banking that he fully returns to form and becomes a solid player on the island. His combination of speed and athleticism makes him a worthwhile gamble at this point of the draft.

I don't know what the NFL will do about franchise tags if the lockout is lifted. They could keep the tags in place and try to negotiate a new CBA before the issue is litigated. Or they could do away with the tags to avoid antitrust scrutiny on that issue. I really have no clue which course of action they'll take.If the franchise tags are done away with, VJ is as good as gone. Otherwise . . . I'd expect him to play for $9 million or whatever the franchise tag amount would be, but who knows with him?I think they'll try to keep Floyd, and I think Floyd will be receptive. So that leaves Floyd, Crayton, Ajirotutu, and Brown. With Floyd's injury history, they'll need another WR2/WR3 type guy in the mix, and they can't expect to get one in the draft. (I wouldn't count on Brown for much this year, either.) This will be a position of need in free agency if VJ is gone.From the group of Floyd, Crayton, Ajirotutu, and Brown; I'd expect Floyd to start, and for Crayton and Ajirotutu to compete for the other spot. They like Crayton in the slot, but he can play outside as well. It's hard to pencil Ajirotutu in as a starter right now because of his lack of experience. He'll have to win the job in camp.

Interesting, so you think it's possible A.J. will franchise him in order to keep him on the team this year, if that option exists. I would have assumed that if there is a franchise tag he would only use it on Jackson in order to trade him and would make sure to get a deal done this time. A.J. seemed to make it clear last year that he doesn't feel the Chargers need Jackson enough to pay him big money, even for one year. IMO franchising and keeping him this year would give at least the appearance that he is admitting he was wrong, and that doesn't seem like A.J.'s style.

Interesting. Have there been any indications of specific free agent candidates A.J. might consider signing? I was suggesting that they would stick with this group and maybe another young guy, like Richard Goodman... I thought maybe A.J. would look at last season as confirmation that the Chargers with Rivers, Gates, and Norv can have a strong passing game with such a group.

Yes, I was envisioning Crayton as the #3 and slot WR, though maybe what would happen is Crayton and Ajirotutu would split the snaps outside.

Also, what is the current expectation on Sproles? Is it possible he will resign, or is he likely to be gone? And, if he walks, is there any expectation that the RB targets may be reduced and perhaps shifted a bit to the WRs? Just trying to judge whether the Chargers' #2 WR this year will have any fantasy value.

Yes, definitely. VJ is the best WR on the Chargers. It would be nice to keep him. For some reason I'm not totally clear on (probably having something to do with immaturity exemplified by driving without a license after multiple DUIs), AJ apparently doesn't want to commit to VJ with a long-term deal. But he doesn't seem opposed to keeping him around on a one-year deal.

I think AJ would have offered VJ franchise-type money last year if that's what he thought it would take to sign him. But AJ didn't think it would take that much. He thought VJ would accept the $3.3 million. And VJ probably would have accepted that with any number of different agents. Anyway, part of the strategy of getting him to accept $3.3 million was the threat to reduce the offer to $600K after that; and after the deadline went by, AJ wasn't going to make himself a liar by relenting.
IMO franchising him this year would give at least the appearance that he is admitting he was wrong, and that doesn't seem like A.J.'s style.

I don't think AJ Smith cares a lick about appearances. (And note that VJ has already been franchised by the Chargers this offseason. The question now is whether the franchise tag will be valid.)

There haven't been indications on specific free agents that I know if. I think the Chargers can get by with any group of receivers, but just getting by may not be enough. It's a pretty thin group right now, especially considering that Floyd is a free agent, and that even if he stays, he can't really be counted on for the whole season.

Should have clarified in the statement that you quoted that I meant franchising and keeping him would give that appearance, which means the fact he was already franchised doesn't matter much at this point, even if the tag ends up being relevant.

Seems like the whole draft except for Liuget, Brown (unless he returns kicks/punts) and the OL guy was dedicated to special teams.I'm underwhelmed. I thought they might try a bit harder to get pass rush help. They better find a way to retain Cooper and Burnett.

Chargers have agreed to terms with Randy McMichael, Jeromy Clary and Takeo Spikes so far. Kevin Burnett and Eric Weddle are reported to be their next targets.

In regards to Weddle, AJ said this week that he has a dollar amount in mind as to what Weddle's value is to the team. He said that if a team like Jacksonville is willing to supercede that number, they can have him.

 
this may me a dumb question.....but from what I here it sounds like VJ is going to sign his non exlclusive franchise whatever....when it all comes out in the wash...what exactly did he gain by holding out....?

He didn't gain much, but I guess he had no way of knowing that for sure at the time. No way other than looking at Smith's history. He was trying to get a long term deal or be traded. He didn't get that and he can't go another season of only being paid $300K. Take the 11 million and try to have a great season. That's the only way to get the long term deal now.
 
I guess that's the end of Cooper on the Chargers. Seems like a significant downgrade from him to Spikes, even though Cooper usually misses some games with injuries. Is Mouton going to play inside or outside?

They picked up 5 WR in rookie FA signings. 0 safeties. If Weddle leaves S is going to be a problem. Sanders can't be relied on, we could be looking at Gregory and Oliver getting a lot of PT.

 
Chargers have re-signed weddle. They also agreed to terms with Jonas Moutan. Chargers appear to be in a serious win-now mode. :football:

 
So now we move on to sweating out the Burnett negotiations. They're letting Tucker go, probably Applewhite too. LB will be thin if both Cooper and Burnett walk.

More on Weddle being the highest-paid safety in the league:

Weddle's getting $40 million over 5 years with $19 million guaranteed.

Eric Berry got $60 million over 6 years with $34 million guaranteed.

Cesaire and Barnes resigned. Good to see that, they're solid contributors, maybe Barnes can develop into a consistent pass rusher from the outside.

2nd rounder Gilchrist signed.

Looks like Weddle's agent was spinning. I'm happy with the contract. As an armchair GM, I'd reserve big, long term deals for folks exactly like Weddle. Guy is great on the field, in the locker room, and off the field.

It was expected, and there will still be more than enough opportunity for Mathews to be a top 15 fantasy RB.

:shrug: It'll be heavily dependent on league scoring systems. Those that are TD heavy probably won't see Matthews finish that high. I also wonder which of the two gets the larger share of Sproles's targets/3rd and long reps (assuming they don't find a new Sproles).

As I posted elsewhere recently:Mathews was a rookie dealing with a high ankle sprain last year that led him to miss 4 games and be less than 100% in other games. Still, projecting his production from last year to 16 games results in 904/9 rushing and 193/0 receiving... that's 164 fantasy points. However, that rushing production is only based on 211 carries; I feel pretty certain that Mathews will get at least 240 carries if he remains healthy... which should translate to more than 1000 rushing yards. And his 22 catches last year were with Sproles (59 catches) on the roster... he should be good for 40 catches this year... even at his pedestrian 6.6 ypr rate from last year, that is more than 250 receiving yars. So... 1250 total yards and 9 TDs is conservative but is 179 fantasy points... right at the cutoff for RB15 last year in standard scoring leagues, despite leaving plenty of touches available for Tolbert. And IMO there is upside for Mathews beyond that.

As for Sproles' touches, I think Mathews should play more downs and in more situations, and thus he should get more of them than Tolbert.

I meant to reply to this earlier. Seems like Matthews is a little delicate. That means 2 things: he might just flat out miss time, and in order to keep him healthy, Turner will use Tolbert often to reduce the mileage on Matthews. Either way I think 240 carries is close to his ceiling, and am expecting 20 to 40 less. I also disagree about the 40 catches. Tolbert is a decent receiver and also seems to be a better blocker, particularly since Matthews is behind in his pro development due to the amount of time he's missed (as a result of injuries). If Matthews can't block he won't be in there much on passing downs - #17 is more important than Matthews's reps. Finally I think 9 TDs is is ceiling, I'd expect 6-7, with Tolbert getting more TDs than Matthews.
 
I recently acquired Rivers to my dynasty squad to go along with Vjax and Gates. Just thought I'd stop in and check on the progress of the team I've apparently cast my lot with.

 
Liuget signs. Given the number of guys who are new to the squad, and that they're breaking in a new DC, I'd imagine the D will take a bit to come together this year. The shortened preseason doesn't help. The line and secondary should be solid, but I'm worried about the LBs.
 
So we lose buster davis and Nanee to FA. That leave Vjax, Floyd and the rookie although Floyd's name is being tossed around everywhere else. Cotchery's name is getting tossed around. Seriously hope they sign floyd or bring in someone.
