Gore, Smith receive weekly NFL honors

Ho-hum.

Another week. Another win. Another set of honors the 49ers.

Today, the NFL announced that running back Frank Gore has been named the FedEx Ground Player of the Week and linebacker Aldon Smith has been named the Pepsi Rookie of the Week for their performances in a 25-19 win over the Lions. It was the second straight week that Smith received the award.

Gore rushed for 141 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown in Detroit, continuing his about-face after a slow start to the season. Gore has reeled off three straight 100-yard games for the third time in his seven-year career, collecting 393 yards, averaging 7.9 yards a carry and scoring three touchdowns during that span.

In the season’s first three games, Gore had 148 yards, averaged 2.5 yards a carry and scored one touchdown.

Smith, in the midst of a three-game stretch in which he’s had all of his 5.5 sacks, had four tackles, two sacks, a safety and a forced fumble against the Lions.

Smith is on pace to tie the NFL rookie record for sacks (14.5) set by Tennessee’s Jevon Kearse in 1999 (sacks became an official stat in 1982). In addition, Smith, at his current pace, would also have the most sacks by a 49er since Chris Doleman had 15 in 1998 and would be the first to record a double-digit sack total since Andre Carter had 12.5 in 2002.

Anything to see with Braylon Edwards? His first game back and he caught 4 for 40. Any homers watch the game? Enough passes to make him a viable FF starter?

I think it depends on your league size and scoring system. The Niners will throw as little as possible. Alex Smith has looked much better but they're not going to start having him sling the ball like he's Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees. In a 10 team league with normal scoring I'd say Braylon is an okay #3 wr and a great bye week filler.

So it turns out the York had a brilliant long term strategy - hire the worst coaches he could find for a number of years, while putting together a team with a ton of talent, due to the high draft choices said coaching afforded. Then bring in a top new coach to put it all together.

On a serious note, struck me yesterday that they've taken on a number of former 1st rounders from other teams: Justin Smith, Carlos Rogers, Braylon Edwards, Ted Ginn Jr., Donte Whitner.

Combine that with their own starting first rounders: Willis, V. Davis, A. Davis, Staley, Iupati, Crabtree, Aldon Smith, Alex Smith, and that's a lot of high picks.

(Maybe this is just a duh, no ####, and every team is like this - still seemed interesting to me and yet another testament to what a good coach Harbaugh is.)

Brooks' play suitable for framing: Coach Jim Harbaugh's favorite play from last week's 20-10 win against Cleveland? Linebacker Ahmad Brooks' helmetless sack-and-strip of Browns quarterback Colt McCoy appears to be a strong candidate.

Brooks was bleeding from his mouth and nose after hitting McCoy's helmet with his face. Harbaugh said a picture of the play has been displayed in the 49ers' team meeting room.

"Loved it, loved it," Harbaugh said. "Wished he would have come wiped some (blood) off on my cheek ... Doesn't even have his eyes closed either. A lot of guys would have probably closed the eyes when making that tackle without a helmet, but not Ahmad Brooks. Loved it, loved it."

What's funny is that some fans wanted Braylon Edwards instead of Alex Smith (while a lot of them wanted Aaron Rodgers) in the 2005 draft. Now they have 3 of the top ten picks out of that draft in Smith, Edwards, and Rogers.

You realize he was speaking of Carlos Rogers who went with the 9th pick that year, not Aaron Rogers who went later.

i think they beat the g-men next week. feels good to be a niner fan again!
i can't help but feel we have a stinker coming. can't afford to waste so many red zone opps against a good team like NYG, especially since they match so well against us. Skins and Browns are both crap and should have been 31-3 type wins. :beenburnedtoomanytimes:

In the 49er/Redskins thread you were concerned it was a trap game & thought the 49ers were in for a loss, now we should have blown them out???The surprising thing to me for this whole season has been how well the 49ers have handled the east coast games. As I've said before, the 49ers could not buy a win on the east coast previously, so this year has been an eye opener. I keep waiting for a letdown but they are just so consistent in what they are doing. Looking forward to see how they match up against the Giants passing attack. It's not in the Packer/saints class, but should be a really good test to see how far the team has come since the Dallas game.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, the niners aren't a good enough offensive team to put up 30+ on opponents at will... 5 weeks ago what you posted would've been considered crazy talk. And I don't think the giants match up all that well against the niners, they're terrible at defending the run.

The niners should be able to run the ball on them, plus it's at home. that said, I'm afraid Eli will be able to sling it on them. I'll bet the line ends up being pretty narrow either way.

I didn't realize people would miss an key letter here.

An interesting fac I saw the other day, and I didn't realize this....Vernon Davis' touchdown Sunday was his 33rd of his career, putting him in a tie with Brent Jones for most career tds by a 49er tight end.

2 areas not getting nearly enough press: special teams and o-line

Akers, Lee, Ginn Jr., et al have been stellar.

Ditto for the O-line (2 sacks allowed against the league leading NYG [30])

Iupati and A.Davis are coming into their own in their 2nd year.

Moving Snyder into the starting line-up over Rachal made a huge difference,

and most importantly, signing Goodwin gave them a seasoned veteran presence to anchor it all together.

They also have depth with Rachal and Boone, who they took a chance on (loaded with talent, but problems with alcohol).

9-1 now baby!!

They have to figure out how to put TD"s on the board instead of FG's. No way they can hang with the packers with just FG's.

Just like the Browns and Skins game. Should have been 28-0 at half and its 9-0. Oof.Yah, I know, I know...lets just be happy to be here and all....

Braylon is looking like crap. First pass he dropped he banged his wrist, wonder how much that affected his next few drops. Good showing by Williams though.

Fired up for the Harbaugh Bowl

:lol:I don't expect the Niners to win this one, unfortunately. They've been good traveling to the East coast this season, but traveling to the East coast on a short week against the Ravens? Ugh.
I didnt expect them to be 9-1 at this point, or to be 4-0 in EST road games this season either. The Ravens will be playing on a short week, too. The only advantage they have in this one is home field. Also, Ray Lewis' status is still up in the air. John Harbaugh said today there a "realistic chance" Lewis could play on Thanksgiving. Even if he does, I dont think he will be 100%....that said, Ray Lewis at 70% is better than 99% of linebackers in the league. Its gonna be a good one I think!

I agree. Williams had 5 targets, and he caught all 5, including the TD. AFter the game Harbaugh said he earned more playing time, and that Edwards wasnt fully recovered yet from surgery.Hopefully we get to see more of this kid

I would think the travel day is a much bigger deal on a short week because it's eating up a higher percentage of your prep time. I'm guessing 17-6, Ravens. Niners have yet to play an elite defense and Baltimore shouldn't have problems motivating themselves for this one. Hopefully it will at least be a good learning and motivating experience.

Game is going to be a defensive slug fest even if Lewis is out. Vegas has it BAL -3 at the moment. :football:
I'm looking forward to watching Rice vs Bowman in the passing game. I'm curious to see if Fangio respects Torrey Smith enough to have Goldson over the top. I'm guessing Reed will man up on VD, which opens things up for Crab or Delanie.Wing, good points on Williams. Lardarius isn't much of a cover corner, I think he can be exposed.

Bingo.Cross-country travel on a short week while the Ravens chill at home after a home game? Oof.I also believe this is the game they tried to get rescheduled to go back-to-back with the Washington game to cut out a week of unnecessary travel. Just a really crappy draw, imho.

A little news/injury update

Fullback Bruce Miller and right tackle Anthony Davis are still uncertain for the 49ers on Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens.

Miller sustained an apparent concussion when Arizona Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson's shoulder hit his head at the end of a 5-yard pass play along the sideline in the first quarter of the 49ers' 23-7 victory.

If Miller is unable to play Thursday against the Ravens, veteran Moran Norris will likely be used as the 49ers primary fullback. Norris has been healthy for several weeks after fracturing his left fibula in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Third tight end Justin Peelle played fullback Sunday with Miller out of action.

Anthony Davis' status is also up in the air after spraining his right ankle in the third quarter. He left the game for three snaps, then was on the field for two plays before sitting out the remainder of the game.

Backup tackle Alex Boone played well in Davis' absence. Boone is in line to get his first career start if Davis is unable to play.

"I have tons of confidence in Alex Boone," Harbaugh said.

The 49ers are scheduled to have a full practice Tuesday before flying Wednesday to Baltimore. The 49ers had lights on their practice field for a Monday evening walk-through practice.

OK, Alex is just terrible. Im really hoping Harbaugh looks at a new QB this offseason.
Pretty hard to look good when you're sacked 10 times and hurried another dozen or so times. The Ravens did a great job getting to him. I've little doubt Alex is not the long term solution but let's not jump off the bandwagon after the quality season he's had thus far.

thisNo surprise, short week + losing a day traveling east. D showed solid, OL lost the game. Regroup and take it out on those sorry #####es in St. Lous

Man is Rachal really that bad that he can completely destroy the offensive line. IIRC Rachal started the first 3 games, during which the OL was awful. He got benched for Snyder and we've barely heard a peep from the o-line the past 7 or so weeks. Today Rachal and Davis were absolutely abominable, whether it was getting fooled by stunts or just getting manhandled when the Ravens were rushing 4.

I'm not of the bandwagon yet, its not just this game, Ive watched Alex a lot this year and he just doesn't have a killer instinct. He always takes what defenses give him instead of attacking. Guys like Rodgers always seem to dictate to defenses while Alex always waits to see what the defense is going to let him have, which is usually a short yardage checkdown. I just don't think he will ever be a quick, good decision maker. Its almost like the game is still to fast for him to read and react like he should at this point in his career. This season is sill a quantum leap compared to past seasons, but I'm just not sold on whether or not he can even be a good game manager in January when the season is on the line. And tonight he could have avoided at least a few of those sacks by throwing the ball away, but he kept holding it and taking the loss. No excuse for it.

:goodposting: But in fairness to Alex there were a couple plays where he could have thrown the ball away but instead avoided what was a sure sack and scrambled for positive yardage or completed a pass. So I'm not going to knock him for holding the ball too long and taking a sack. He was Big Ben-ish in that regard (and sadly only that regard).

I've now had Gore for two weeks since trading for him. Hopefully this isn't "THE WALL" for him and he can recover for the end of the season. He's borderline unstartable.

This is the real question I think. Alex clearly wasn't sharp at the end, and started holding on to the ball too much, but the pressure he had on him was ridiculous. Not only was he sacked 10 times, but there might have only been 5 dropbacks all game where he wasn't hurried or hit or had the pocket collapse. Rachal really is bad, but does his crapitude somehow affect the rest of the line? I don't know enough about O-line play/assignments/etc to know the answer, but this week really did remind me of the first couple weeks when it was obvious that our o-line blew, and led to the whole "we don't suck" affair. And it wasn't just Rachal getting beat, although maybe with more cohesion the whole line plays better? There was one play in the 4th when the Ravens rushed 4 guys, and every single one of them blew by our line to get after Alex. It was so bad that I thought we were setting up a screen, but then Alex just threw it away and got called for intentional grounding. That's just pathetic.

Yeah.

Not sure how you can pin this one on Alex.

It was getting ridiculous - he barely had time to get to the back of his drop.

Thing I'm scratching my head over is the play calling.

Not sure why they didn't stick with the run.

They were starting to knock off more 4 and 5 yarders into the 2nd half.

Also, wondering what Harbaugh has against the screen pass (to backs).

Seems like he hardly did anything to try and counter the pass rush, other than commit more blockers.

All that did was offer fewer targets running routes.

They still were on him in 2 seconds.

Come to think of it, it was kind of a microcosm of the previous 6 years.

Im not pinning this loss on Alex, Im just tired of watching him be unsure and passive when it comes to decision making. Maybe he will prove me wrong and learn how to attack a defense, (and maybe even develop a vertical game), but I doubt it.

Also, when pressured, and particularly when the pocket starts to collapse, more times than not he just tucks the ball and waits for the hit instead of keeping his eyes downfield and looking for an outlet. Drives me nuts.

All that said, this season is amazing, and I coudnt be more pumped that we are winning.

Rachal needs to be waived. Immediately.
From Friday Harbaugh conference call:Q: If the Adam Snyder injury is prolonged, do you open a competition at right guard? Would Alex Boone get a shot there?HARBAUGH: We believe in Chilo Rachal. We feel good with him at that position. If it’s prolonged with Snyder than Chilo will step up.Q: Do you fear that Snyder’s injury could be prolonged? Where does that stand at the moment?HARBAUGH: I don’t know exactly where it stands at this moment. But no, I don’t fear it. He’s a guy that bounces back quick and Chilo’s up and ready to go. :wall:

If you ran some sort of yards per play analysis with Rachal in the game vs. anyone else over the last 3 years, I'll bet there would be a marked difference. A couple of years ago that was fine, because he was a developing prospect, but that ship has sailed at this point.
