*** Official 2011 San Francisco 49ers Thread *** (1 Viewer)

TB passing defense was ranked 1st in 2002.

SF passing defense is ranked 16th in 2011.
By total yards. that ranking in this year is skewed, as teams generally attempted far more passes against the Niners than against an average team. 49ers also ranked 9th best in net yards allowed on a pass play, a much better indication of a defense imo.Not to mention, Andy Lee gave the Niners D best field position in the league iirc. For a bend and not break defense like the 49ers, those yards are less important as opposed to a big play/stop before the endzone or redzone
DAL and PHI each passed over 400 yards on them. Teams like AZ, CLE, STL, CIN, have passed less than 200 yards on them. The 49ers haven't faced a Brees or Rodgers this season.
um OK, yea they did. nevertheless, we won one game and lost a very close OT game at home. giants also passed for 300+ yards, but we forced turnovers. yardage, again, isnt the end of everything. steelers got a lot of yards out of gimpy Ben too, but since every drive of theirs started at the very most on the 20 yard line, and ended in a pick or a stop, they couldnt score much.the 49ers offense will get a decent amount of points against the Saints because the Saints defense is as scheeks. the only thing Im worried about on offense is the preseason game in which Payton brought the heat nearly every down. That's what Baltimore did and it wasn't pretty, especially on the right side of the oline.

if people think Alex Smith and the offense are winning this game on their shoulders or keeping them in the game, they're delusional. We'll live and die with this D and the front 7.
Still doesn't discount the fact the Michael Vick alone had almost 500 yards on you.
so you decide bring semantics into the equation. good job. next season when I wake up for that 10am game on sunday to watch every snap, just like I've been doing every gameday for the last 10 years, through monster hangovers and no sleep, I'll make sure to remember that I should never refer to my team as 'we' :) otherwise I'll be faced with the wrath of the bold font  as far as Vick, yea he threw for a lot and ran for a lot as well. Niners have had trouble defending a mobile QB/fast RB on the edges, that much is obvious.

but that by itself doesnt matter at all. The Jets last year, a top 5 passing D, gave up 400+ yards to Brady. We all know what happened when they faced Brady again in the playoffs. Oh, and Jets lost that regular season game. Niners won theirs.
What does your hangovers and the Jets have to do with Skelton tossing 282 and 3 tds on them?

If there was a feature where you could block someone from posting in a thread, Id be all over it.
:goodposting: Not sure what drummer's deal is other than trolling and enjoying him or herself. Very few people are arguing that SF has superbowl-lock written on them. Most of 49ers fans are thrilled that we're talking about playoff games without pulling a Jim Mora "Playoffs??!!" moment. But I would absolutely use an ignore list (for a variety of posters, not just one.)

The thread title says "Official 2011 San Francisco 49ers Thread". I didn't realize it was a review of "We Bought a Zoo" feel good movie thing happening here.

Keys for the 49ers success in the playoffs go back to where it always is true: Frank Gore, Pass Rush, Special Teams, Frank Gore. Heck, Carlos Rogers and Delanie Walker on KNBR said the formula was Gore and the defense, while having Alex Smith toss a few to keep the opposing defenses honest.

If you wanna call the defense "Elite", fine. I think it's a damn good defense that finally has a pass rush which they lacked for years since the days of Stubby and BY. The defense is no longer Patrick Willis, Patrick Willis, and Patrick Willis' name called every play. The helicopter ride that Nolan took Justin Smith on over San Francisco has finally payed dividends.

But I wont call them Elite until I see them face The Elite in Brees and Rodgers whose teams are on fire as far as offense.

As far as the 49er offense: I'm a 49er fan. I used to seeing Elite offenses in my own backyard. It's nowhere near an average offense. I think I have posted enough about it in this "feel good" thread already not to cover old ground in this post.

I'm not "just happy" to be in the playoffs. 49er fans know it's "Super Bowl or Bust" in SF. Or it used to be. Steve Young always said that if they didn't win the Super Bowl it was a train wreck season. Young lost a few playoff games and NFC Championships to know this, and back in the day, 49er fans used to hate on Young for not being able to win a big game. I wasn't one of those fans. So it goes to show how demanding 49er fans were before John York destroyed the team and the 49er Legacy.

I'm not gonna be content until the 49ers get a Real QB and a stud #1 WR. I'm kinda disgruntled at this so-called offense. Not at Frank Gore though. He is the key to everything in SF.

So if they pull off a miracle and win the superbowl, you won't be content? :o I agree with a lot of your critique (in fact, pretty much all of it), but why can't you just enjoy the ride? We, or um, should I say, the 49ers are the #2 friggin seed man!

Agree. Look, all of us wish we had a QB like Brees or Rodgers, and WRs like Calvin Johnson, but we dont. So for now we have to work with what we have, and its working pretty good (Ive been a 49er fan for 30 years, I have endured good times and bad times, I have earned the right to say "we" and "us". Get over it). Of course I want us to be a serious SB contender, but did any of us think, before the season started, that we would finish 13-3??As far as the SB or Bust mantra, sure in the powerhouse dynasty days that was true. But THIS year, I think being 2nd seed in the NFC far surpasses any expectations anyone had for us. THIS year. So Im not gonna piss and moan about being barely average on offense...its not the strength of our team right now. But I think this team as a whole has taken giant steps forward, and players didnt even have this coaching staff to work with during the lockout. I for one am going to wait and see how much more progress is made once the coaching staff has a chance to work with the players for an entire offseason. But for now, for THIS YEAR, I couldnt be happier with how it has turned out up to this point.

And now the ante is upped for next year. Expectations WILL be Super Bowl or bust. But this year? C'mon, man. This year has been a huge success and we once again have a team we can feel good about going forward. Its been a while since that has been the case. How can any 49er fan not be happy about that?

The "Miracle" would be for Alex Smith to morph into Joe Montana. Can he do it? I would hope so since they are gonna give him 3 more years for $30+ million that would only be a drop in the bucket to go after a Real QB. My off-season miracle is for Baalke to pull one for Andrew Luck. Until Smith shows that he can win the Big Game, then I remain "faithfully" disgruntled. ;)

My high expectation for the team was for they to get 10 wins. They are 3 better than that. So needless to say I am very happy. But it's playoff time, and my 49er playoff hat is on. Time for them to make some noise in the post season. The worst thing that can happen is for they to lose the Super Bowl. That would seriously suck.

BTW, being a another 30+ year fan, I never say "we" when referring to the team because I wasn't part of the FO staff that hired Erickson, Nolan, and Singletary, as well as ignored Bill Walsh who saved them (and killed them with Salary Cap) after the Policy/Clark era. Which was another disastrous era on itself.

if you were able to follow logical arguments, then my hangovers had nothing to do with that fact. you pieced them together yourself in a sad attempt to be facetious. and for every Skelton I can find a Chad Henne who threw for 360+ yards against the Jets. then the same Jets went and used their DEFENSE to win against Indy and New England. So THAT'S what Jets have in common with the 49ers. No matter who threw on them in the regular season, they went and beat those teams.

Sorry, I was having a hard time wondering why a hangover had something to do with a logical argument.

I'm going to borrow a page from your own book. Now I get what's going on here. You're a long time 49ers fan. You became spoiled. You think teams win with air attacks and offenses. You love to see QBs air it out. You won't be content with the team as long as it doesn't fit your idea of what is good football and doesnt get a stud QB and a stud WR, when WRs and QB arent even the biggest problem on the offense. Moreover, you only want to be associated with the good and not the bad. I'd say you probably liked Mariucci here, even though he rode on Seifert's baggage, Young, TO, and that OLine that was mostly drafted before him.Well, that's one way to think about it I guess. I'm completely on a different page. My first Niner game when I started rooting for them was when Steve Young got trucked by Aeneas Williams. Then I watched Baltimore and Tampa Bay win with dominant defenses. I also watched the Giants D play great against what was called one of the best offenses of all time just for Eli to get the ultimate credit.Ben I've watched Ben Rapeeverybush have one of the ugliest ever QB games in the Superbowl and still somehow get some credit for winning it.I've watched the Pats and Belli's defensive schemes suffocate the greatest show on turf, just like his schemes with the Giants were used to suffocate the Niners in the mid 80s. I've watched the Jets D, with a bad QB like Sanchez and questionable WR core, take them to the AFC championship twice. This defense is good enough for us to compete. If we resign Rogers and draft a CB or a FS next year, it will be an absolute monster. In the playoffs, it's all about defense, turnovers, field position and little things in general, something this team does well. It's not about the prettiest spiral and breathtaking big passing plays.

wait, you have a hard time wondering ? whoa, the situation is worse than I thought...maybe the drumming got a bit too loud ?excuse me for thinking you were being facetious, seems like you replies are absolutely genuine.

You're a spoiled brat from the Niner glory years who will only be content if they win by doing exactly what you feel is right. If they win with another style you throw tantrums and whine how terrible it really is. Good defenses can, have, and do win Super Bowls. This team exceeded everyone's expectations. Even yours. So quit crying for once in this thread and enjoy where they're at. Realize that a good defense is usually better than a good offense and keep your fingers crossed like the rest of us. Pretend you're actually a Niners fan instead of the local grouch who can never be pleased and hates life in general.

So quit crying for once in this thread and enjoy where they're at. Realize that a good defense is usually better than a good offense and keep your fingers crossed like the rest of us. Pretend you're actually a Niners fan instead of the local grouch who can never be pleased and hates life in general.
:goodposting: Looking forward to the new hat.

SF will show DET how to make tackles and catch INTs next week. ;)

DET did get hosed on that Brees fumble. If the refs didn't blow the whistle early, that's taken for 6 the other way. It was still a ball game at that point too.

You've mentioned that post a few times while ignoring the fact I also said
I'll be a bit surprised (but quite happy) if Alex Smith isn't back for another year. But I have total faith in Harbaugh - if he keeps Alex I trust it will work out.
And so what? Even if I hated Alex Smith and had no faith in Harbaugh it's clear I was wrong and can admit as much. Harbaugh will get the benefit of any doubts I have for at least one more year. Anyhow, let's hope your playoff hat works well. Detroit was keeping New Orleans in check for a bit. Here's hoping being on the road and against a better defense stalls them out.

I know how you felt about Smith because I felt the same way. I'm just not as sold on the job Harbaugh has done as far as 'improving' Smith outside of not taking any chances with his arm this regular season. Heck, what Norv Turner did with him was far more impressive. Harbaugh has him less 11 INTS, 1 TD and 160 yards better. But hey, my playoff hat is on. New season altogether.

I like how most of everyone on this board (not a 9er fan) are giving the 9ers a snowball's chance in hell to win vs. NO.

I know that the odds are against us, but I really, really, REALLY hope that Harbaugh puts together the perfect game plan, everyone executes it perfectly, and we pull off the win next week. It will feel so good to post a bunch of  's in those threads on Saturday night. :)

I'm actually ok with the lack of confidence this 49er team is getting. If we win, it's huge. If we lose, it's easier to stomach because we weren't supposed to win anyhow.

I respect the "Superbowl or Bust" mentality, but that's not mine. Of course we want to win superbowls, but I'd rather enjoy watching games later into the season and keep the excitement going longer than being eliminated early. This season's been a bonafide success in my book.

For the record, I don't expect to beat the Saints. They've been schooling teams for the past few weeks. Here's hoping the combination of them being on the road, on real grass makes a difference.

And any talk about 49er fans being spoiled is odd... we've had plenty of time to unlearn those glory days.

I wasn't one of those fans who called into Bernie Ward's (Bernie is in prison now due to possessing kiddie porn) radio show on KGO wanting Jimmy Johnson instead of George Seifert after a regular season loss to PHI. Seifert remembered that after winning the Super Bowl vs. SD. Fans who wanted to see Cody Pickett behind center after the Dynasty era didn't realize the pain would not stop until this season. The only thing good that came out of the Cody Pickett era was Andy Lee. I tip my playoff hat to all of us who suffered through this. :banned:

I'm not sure if beating the Saints is what's best for the team in the long run. If the Niners can beat the Saints with Alex Smith, I'm afraid it will give management reason to re-sign him to a long-term contract that will doom the Niners to being a rung short for years. If Drew Brees beats the 49ers, perhaps it will show them that they need to go out and get Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn to win another Super Bowl. I'm going to be rooting for the Niners, but I won't be disappointed if they lose.

Alternatively, if they lose, it's also less draft spots to have to trade down to get Luck.

You'll be fine. They won't win and Smith will be a FA. Manning will ask for his release to go to a contender called the 49ers (or he retires).

I'd be surprised if we trade down for Luck as I think Harbaugh made his choice in Kaepernick and I think the price will be steep. And Drummer - agree that Smith probably isn't the long term answer and will share that :banned: with you... at the end of the day we're on the same side.

And, now a break from your regularly scheduled programming...can you believe it's been 30 years ago today? I remember watching that game on TV.

Maybe we need a geezer emoticon (http://www.free-dc.org/forum/images/smilies/geezer.gif) for old farts like me :)

There is nothing on the face of the Earth that is enough to wrestle the #1 pick away from the Colts.

Harbaugh has already told Alex that he wants him back next year. Alex WILL resign, and he WILL be the 49er starting quarterback next year, regardless of the outcome this Saturday.

It's one thing to say that and it's another thing to go through with that if Peyton Manning is healthy, a free agent, and expresses interest in coming to SF.

We'll call this the Peyton Manning exception. lol. Barring THAT situation, Im positive Alex will be the starter next year.

Baalke was targeting Jimmy Clausen last draft (until Singletary ran all over him in the War Room), and CIN stole Dalton from them and they got Kaep instead. It isn't like they aren't looking for a QB. Harbaugh has held the offense back because it isn't a passing team with what they have as far as the roster. He has Smith bubble wrapped until the playoffs. We'll see how Smith responds, and he can run a high octane offense. He just blows himself up at times when he does, usually near the finish line. I think Sing saved Baalke from that Clausen pick, but killed it with Taylor Mays anyway.

Ginn is supposed to play today. Three cheers to all the Niner fans as we hope for a victory. Yes, that even includes drummer. ;)

Hell yeah he was. I will take poor offense most of the game for the last 4 minutes to win. But the defense, Justin Smith, and Seely gave him that opportunity.

Defense was lights out except for the 2 long TD plays. They made believers out of a lot of people today. The offense was as bad as Ive seen for a long stretch there. But, like you said, it came alive and got the job done when it mattered.Special teams was on point all day, too. Very unheralded group.

I was watching this game with family members, and I told them the 49ers have to put the game into Smith's hands and let him throw the ball, even on the final possession to win it instead of going into overtime. I didn't care if they might have lost doing it. In a game like this, let's see what you have behind center. Smith delivered. Now let's hope he can carry this over into the next game, and not have us bite our nails into the knuckles looking like he did until the final few minutes of this game after the 17 point spot.
