Jay hurt pretty badhope that's the worst news of the day
The only reason they would consider doing that is if they in fact thought that Shea was a better OLB in a 3-4 than a down lineman in a 4-3. But I don't think that moving Shea to an OLB position in a 3-4 is suddenly going to turn him in to a stud. He might be a little better at OLB in a 3-4, but certainly not enough to change your defense to accommodate him.Yeah I think it's going to be tough to fix this D. Said it last week, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a switch to a 3-4 next year. The line will need a big body for NT and then a pass rushing OLB to play opposite Shea. Paea, Melton and Wooten could all play DE. Briggs, Bostic, Greene and Anderson are enough for the ILB spots.

Nobody wants Shea. And I'm not sure how Melton is going to get big money after missing virtually the whole year. Scheme never really mattered to me so I don't care either way. Just have a feeling Emery is going to push it because of Shea, and it's not a stretch at all to put Paea, Melton and maybe Wooten at DE; I'm sure Trestman doesn't care. The only reason they would consider doing that is if they in fact thought that Shea was a better OLB in a 3-4 than a down lineman in a 4-3. So if you switched to a 3-4 you are really playing them out of position. And I am not convinced that the Bears resign Melton. He is going to want huge money. I just don't see that a switch to a 3-4 defense makes much sense. I think they would be more likely to try to trade Shea to a 3-4 team than switch to a 3-4 themselves.
I'm hopeful that Emery is smart enough to not compound the mistake of picking Shea by trying to adjust the defense to the bust. Seeing what happens with Shea will be really telling about how Emery perceives/deals with his own mistakes. I'm hoping he works out a deal that sends him to the Cubs.Nobody wants Shea. There really is no player holding us to a 4-3. Peppers will be gone and we are going to need wholesale changes either way. Almost like having a blank canvas here. The mistake of Shea was playing him at a position he's not suited for. We really have no idea if he's just a complete waste yet. Every glowing review of him coming into that draft was in the vein of being an OLB in a 3-4.I'm hopeful that Emery is smart enough to not compound the mistake of picking Shea by trying to adjust the defense to the bust. He didn't. The problem was he was on the field a lot not playing.Barely even realized he playedShea gets worse every game. Looked awful yesterday, along with Conte.

Kinda surprised that Shea and Conte didn't accidentally run into one another taking each other out of the game.He didn't. The problem was he was on the field a lot not playing.Barely even realized he playedShea gets worse every game. Looked awful yesterday, along with Conte.

#Bears say Jay Cutler tore groin muscle. Out at least 4 weeks. Lance Briggs is out around six weeks with a shoulder injury.

I think GMs get players wrong. He missed on Shea, and he missed on Rodriguez. He's bound to make mistakes. But he has hit on some good ones. Jeffrey looks good. The returns on Kyle Long are really good so far. No one, including Emery, expected Jordan Mills to be starting as a rookie. The Slauson pick up looks good. The Bennett signing looks good. And I think the selection of Trestman as the coach looks smart. It looks like he is a better fit than Arians would have been. So Emery has done a good job. Next year he will have the challenge of retooling the defense.RBM said:Ha. How the hell could Emery have misread this guys skill set this badly? Scary.flapgreen said:He didn't. I'm blaming the Williams and Briggs injuries on you.Williams and Anderson have been solid, but I'd really like to see Bostic and Greene a bit.
Woooo I didn't say a thing about Briggs.I'm blaming the Williams and Briggs injuries on you.Williams and Anderson have been solid, but I'd really like to see Bostic and Greene a bit.
Calm down. How annoying that you have to rush to his defense. He blew it with Shea and should get slammed for it. Doesn't mean he's done a bad job overall. However that was a huge pick where we had a huge need and it's a big reason our defense is a complete wreck.I think GMs get players wrong. He missed on Shea, and he missed on Rodriguez. I agree with that. The team desperately needs a pass rusher right now. With Peppers fading, Melton out, and Shea a bust the cupboard is bare. You can never have enough pass rushers. Actually, the secondary might not look this bad if they had a pass rush, although Conte and Wright would still suck. You can't cover that up.Calm down. That happens a lot where a team drafts some guy who was a 4-3 DE and they want to convert him to a 3-4 OLB, or vice versa. You are right that it is iffy when you take a player like that in the first round. Occasionally they draft a guy who is just an icredible athlete and hope they can develop him. You are a genius when it works and a goat when it doesn't.What pisses me off the most is that every scouting report of the guy said OLB in a 3-4 and yet he, I assume out of either arrogance or inept scouting, decides to draft him as a 4-3 DE.
Not the time or spot to be taking risks like that imo. Although he did the same this year and looks great. What the hell do I know.
There a couple of us around that said them same thing and got hammered for it. Moronic pick for sure. Hard to win when you keep blowing first round picks. Guy has a tough time cracking the starting lineup even with multiple injuries to the line. I'm pretty sure I saw Urlacher say today that Shea would be better at lb.What pisses me off the most is that every scouting report of the guy said OLB in a 3-4 and yet he, I assume out of either arrogance or inept scouting, decides to draft him as a 4-3 DE.

That and we have so little money left for the year, i'd rather hold on to it in case things get wose on D and we need to sign a body than to add depth to the TE position. There was a time that Scheffler would have been great to have on the roster, but I think that time has passed. Most of the reports indicate that he was released due to multiple concussions and dropping balls. Doesn't sound good to me.

Free agent TE Tony Scheffler worked out for the Bears Friday.
Scheffler was released by the Lions on Tuesday. If signed, he'll provide insurance as the No. 2 tight end behind Martellus Bennett. Scheffler had just seven catches for 82 yards in five games this season.
Strange. When it happened he was touching his hip.Man, this cutler injury is strange. He is talking about how this was his most painful injuy ever, but during the press conference today they wouldn't even rule him out for monday's game after last week talking about a hard 4 week plus timeframe. They also won't be very specific on anything. He's not practicing, but he's out there with the team catching balls from the other QB's?
As of now looks like we have him back for the Lions. So that's great.
I honestly wonder if this was something besides a groin muscle tear.
Don't see anything no to like about this, no long term risk, could help with a playoff push if we can start getting any pressure on the QB. If he works out it could push Wooten back to end and get Shae off the field and that has to help some too.Ratliff signed. Best available?![]()
