Congrats to the Cards fans on here as well. You guys are all classy and that team is going to be sick for years to come. Despite what happened this year, I still think the Cards are the best run franchise in baseball.

For a team that wasn't supposed to make the playoffs, winning two games in the World Series is a damn good season. Tough to overcome all the injuries in top of the $40MM salary difference, and Boston is a really good team.

Ortiz will win the award, but Lester was the Series MVP. That's not a reaction to anything any hitters did or didn't do, but just how valuable a dominant starting pitcher is in a playoff series.

Bummer to see the Cards lose the World Series, but there are fans of 28 other MLB teams who wouldn't have minded the opportunity to see their team in it. It was a great ride, and a great thrill to see one of the games in person.

Pleased with the season and pleased with how the organization has the team positioned going forward. Probably need to find new guys for 3B, SS, and CF, but the "problem" of more flamethrowing 23-year-olds than spots to use them is encouraging.

Been a great season, and wow is my wife going to be happy when she wakes up tomorrow morning to learn baseball season is finally over. I'll give her a couple days before I tell her college basketball season starts in a week.

Congrats to the Sox fans in here - Red Sox players delivered all Series at the right time and the Cards couldn't.

Cardinals will be back I think pretty soon.

Not sure about that. This will be an interesting offseason and it wouldn't shock me of there's a bit of musical chairs going on with some players.

That out of the way, again, congrats Sox fans. World Series titles are something to be damn proud of and, even though I'm fighting back the bile in my stomach saying nice things about a Boston team, the Sox showed some real moxie to win it.

Now that that's out of the way, I still hate all Boston teams with the power of a thousand suns. ;)

crazy, my father never lived to see the Sox win the world series but my kids have seen 3
BTW - no Cardinal fan born since 1902 has had to wait longer than their 25th birthday to see a World Series winner - or 17 years to see a team in the World Series

Come on buck up little fella - tonight hurts sure- this is the Cardinals and you know that they have alot of the parts in place to make it happen. If they can survive Albert leaving and perform like this with all the youth that they have they will be alright. St. Louis is one of the top destinations as a Free Agent out there - and they can get some players to play for a little bit less and still get great value.

I will say this: I think it's close to a lock that the Cardinals push hard and sign Stephen Drew to be their SS next year. Cards have lusted after him for years.

Wait till Tavares is hitting .333 with 20 HR and 80 RBI heading into September next year - you'll feel better

There was a bunch of dead money on the books this year that can be freed up to go shopping this winter. For example, the Cards will probably buyout Westbrook for $1MM instead of paying him $9.75MM. Chris Carpenter probably won't be re-signed, and certainly not for $10.5MM. Furcal's $7MM is probably available. That's a lot of money to spend even if the team doesn't want to increase the total payroll next season.

They have some holes to fill but the Redbirds are in better shape right now than 27-29 of the franchises in baseball.

Disappointing ending, but a heck of a ride this season.

Congrats to all you Sox fans out there. A very nicely played series by your squad. Something to be proud of for sure.

This. Sounds cliche but this reminds me of my litte brother joining me at neyland stadium my 4.5th year (added a minor and wanted to spend a semester at school w my little brother) and his freshman year just prior to FLA going wide on the kick that led to UT winning the title in 1999. It was his first year at the school and on our way over various seats/students/cameras I made a point to let him know "It's not always this good... soak it in". we caught some goalposts and walked them out of the stadium and down the strip but the recently massive stretch of sub-mediocrity (and last year's performance) reminds me how lucky we are to get to enjoy this three title stretch. I'm soaking it in and don't expect another anytime soon.

Congrats Wilked, Icon, Matthias, BS, cakes, moops, etc...... . Go party your asses off now....
Just got done with a 3-waY (hug) with a hot lesbian couple who kept insisting that my girl (of 11 years / live in) might like girls.... she repeatedly shot that concept down :kicksrocks: so I ordered another pint of sam and winded down.

Cards have a ####### ridiculous amount of young live arms. We have no ####### chance of playing for the hardware next year... they might be the favorites for it. Hats off to the Cards front office for that.

Cheers man... have loved your contributions both shtick and thought out.

Cmon on that... shhhh

Very legit argument to make. No way we compete without our arms at least TRYING to match the very very VERY good arms of St Louis.

You guys are stacked...

At least now I will be free to take my daughter trick-or-treating around the neighborhood tomorrow night, instead of getting upset at the doorbell ringing constantly while I'm trying to watch the game. Even if those snot-nosed brats have it coming, it's still poor form to throw candy at them and slams the door in their faces because there are runners on base.
You might be my favorite poster here.

damn hate leaving them juiced
Yep. Because we're going to get a steady diet of their top bullpen guys from here to the end.
LOL. The Cards wouldn't tie this game up if it went 30 innings.
First time encountering Red Sox fans? The real Red Sox fans, the ones who were around for Bernie Carbo, Bucky Dent, Ray Knight, and Aaron Boone and lived to tell about it... They won't believe the game is over until the umps have left the field and the stadium lights have been turned off. And to be fair, they have plenty of reasons to feel that way.
I live in R.I. Right in the middle of it.

Most of that impending doom feeling was erased in 2004.
That's the truth.
The fear is still in me
I was at Game 7, ALCS 2004. By the 2nd inning, everyone at Yankee Stadium knew it was over. Except Sox fans, Yankee fan sitting next to me left in the 4th inning. Unreal. The fear was there, until the end.

Even in that World Series, I remember wanting to kiss the closer foe the Sox in Game 4, for babying that final flip to 1st. Because of the fear.

By the time we were playing the Rockies, no I didn't have it anymore. I didn't think they stood a chance.

I didn't think the Sox were a lock for the title this year, but I am watching now, and am not expecting a comeback. I haven't been reading a bunch of "Here we go..." posts on Facebook after the Sox 2 losses.

I think it's safe to say the Murphy's Law, sky is gonna fall mentality has left Sox fans. For the most part.
As a teenager who elevated the importance of sporting events a bit too much, '86 game 6 killed me. By '03 and Grady Little (Aaron Boone gets too much credit), I was already numbed from 17 years earlier. When the following year's Sox were down 0-3 to the Yankees, it was business as usual. Then it all changed. In '07, there was plenty of hope even when down 3-1 to Cleveland. After Papelbon clinched the title in '07, suddenly comebacks from the brink became _expected_. The following year vs. Tampa it looked like history would repeat as the Sox down 3-1 won a ridiculous game 5 and solidly took game 6 and that's why the tight game 7 loss was actually a bit surprising. Throw in being on the wrong end of a couple ALDS sweeps in '05 and '09 and by '10 expectations kind of became normalized. No elevated expectations, but no sense of dread, either.

I felt this way throughout this whole postseason. Thought Detroit's starting pitching would eat them up, but also thought if they could match them in a few games, that could be the difference and it ended up happening. Thought the same vs. Wainwright and Wacha. Boston, St. Louis, Detroit, Tampa...all good teams. Thought the Sox had a great chance, but respected the opposition and losing to any of them would have been perfectly reasonable. Sox got great play when needed and it carried them. Never thought the Sox had it in the bag, but never waited for the other shoe to drop, either.

:towelwave: :towelwave:

Glad the last game wasn't as tense as the previous 4....not sure my ticker coulda taken that, or a game 7.

Great performance by Lackey.

688/.760/1.188 just plain sick

GB Victorino and Gomes and that pitching staff, top to bottom was nails.

Love the story of peavy's cigar store indian. That sorta loose goofiness has kinda been the hallmark of all the great Sox squads of late.

Doesn’t it seem like good teams always have these quirky anecdotes and strange team-bonding experiences?

Well, this year’s Red Sox team, which is one win away from advancing to the ALCS, has no shortage of chemistry. And while their beards probably stand as their most recognizable symbol of unity, there’s another good luck charm in the Red Sox’ clubhouse that is flying under the radar a bit.

Jake Peavy purchased a little Indian statue during the Red Sox’ West Coast road trip near the end of August. The Sox had just lost two of three to the Yankees at Fenway Park, and Peavy sensed that the club needed a pick-me-up. In stepped the statue, which Peavy apparently had a conversation with before purchasing on his way to the park one day in San Francisco.

Because the story of the good luck charm is so elaborate, so unique and so awesome, let’s just have Peavy tell it. Here’s what Peavy told the media in St. Petersburg on Monday.

“We went through a rough stretch there where we lost two of three in Toronto. We had to go home for just a weekend series. Things got ugly there Sunday night and we ended up losing the series to the Yankees. The guys who travel with us on a daily basis understand that the travel was ridiculous.

“We went out to San Francisco, and things were just kind of it wasn’t that same attitude. And the travel had kind of worn us down. I was walking to the field on the day of my start and walked past a smoke shop, a tobacco/liquor store, I guess — something to that effect.

“And I’m Indian, my heritage is American-Indian. And I walked by and saw just in the glass window this fellow looking at me. And I looked at him and he looked at me. And I just kept walking, I took a few more steps, and I kind of looked back and he was still looking at me. And he said, ‘Am I not one of the boys? Look at me, I’m your people.’ I said, ‘You know what, you are one of the boys.’ I did a U-turn and I went in and asked how much he cost. There was no price tag on him. I told the guy there was a price tag on everything in life.

“We did some negotiating, and I carried him on to the ballpark and brought him in. We had some guys banged up at the time. Came up with some elaborate story about how he had some healing spirit, so he started in the training room, getting some guys right. And he made his first appearance that night in San Francisco, or that day, and we ended up losing that game that I pitched.

“And we had a serious team talk with him, and told him if he didn’t show up tomorrow with a little bit better attitude and show us his powers, then we were going to have to lose him on the plane ride to L.A. But he showed up in a big way, Douby (Felix Doubront) pitched well that day, and we took him to L.A. He showed up for us there in L.A, we won that big series, he got on the flight back with us.

“His wardrobe has grown. I don’t know if you know, but he’s holding some cigars in his hand, and those are celebratory cigars, when we do hopefully reach our goal, we’re going to smoke those cigars that he’s got in the box. But now he’s got a couple of jerseys on. He helped Jacoby [Ellsbury] get back from his injury, because Jacoby has got some Indian in him. They had a good talk. He got Jacoby back for us. He’s got a beard now, he grew out a beard to get on the same page as the rest of the guys. There he is, chief. He’s going to ride on my Duck Boat if we win the World Series.”

This kid Martinez is in the rotation next year, correct?
Gotta think they'll break camp with 6-7 "starters" again. He should be 1 of those.

Shelby Miller, Wainwright, Wacha, Martinez, Jaime Garcia

Chris Carpenter?

Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly - Gotta think they try to move one or both of them IF they can get something worthwhile. The other maybe sees long relief/emergency starter duty.

Jake Westbrook - likely gone.

Still have some interesting arms behind those guys, too, but I'd have to think those are the guys vying for spots next season.

Rosenthal was also a starter up until this year. Tyler Lyons wouldn't be the worst starter in the league. John Gast had shoulder surgery but could be back in the mix by mid 2014. It's really an embarrassment of riches.

Can't wait for next season so we can forget this one. Boston can enjoy this year. Glad the nucleus of the team is old and they'll fall off quickly. Looking forward to it.

Ortiz, Lackey and Uehara are old. Maybe Peavy as well considering his injury history.

They have some free agents but lots of money to spend on them. Their farm system is probably top ten even with Bogaerts graduating. The Red Sox aren't a dynasty but they seem better positioned for sustained success than anyone else in their division.

And at some point there will be a money issue in Tampa and the Yankees have a lot of fixing to do IMO.

Rumor has it the Cardinals may be shopping Miller
If that is true, they can get quite the haul.

Cardinals have an opportunity to really make a geat roster even better. They have young trade chips and a good amount of money coming off the books.

I would be calling the Rangers immediately to see if they would give up Andrus.
