They may get stuck with having to do that. If the top talents (Donald, Barr, Martin, etc.) are gone, then do you push a lower rated guy at a need position or go BPA? THis assumes no trade down can happen. Its not like they don't need another WR, though I hate burning another 1st on it.

How much do you stick to your board versus pushing need?

had they not spent a 2nd round on a TE last year it might make more sense to consider it this year. if Ebron falls they'd have to consider it, but it would annoy me if it came to that. I don;t think he falls anyway

they could use a WR, but they need help throughout the defense, unless some really high rated WR falls there should be a defender of approximate value on the board i would hope

Well, lets say Evans is rated 8th and Ebron is 9th and they are available. Do you take them over Pryor (22nd) or Mosely (24) or Jernigan (29) on the board? I'm making up the board ratings, but you get the idea.

This is what really worries me about where Dallas sits. If they can't trade down, this is the type of thing they could be looking at.

what if you take ebron and your highest rated player in round 2 is a tight end?

I don't subscribe to strict best player available, it has to be a balance

in your example, take evans, he is prolly gonna be special. But the problem is this team is not well rounded, and if it just takes talent and avoids need we could be in for another year of great offense and historically poor defense.

my concern is they have, i dunno, some WR rated 14 and and some DE or Safety rated 18 and take the WR as "best available"

or the ever popular concern that they have someone rated at 16 who everyone else has rated as 47

In your highlighted example, I think they take the DE or safety rated 18 over the 14 rated WR/TE. They did not totally follow their board last year. They passed on 1st round rated guys in WR Patterson and famously the DT Floyd. And even at 31, they took a slightly lower rated Frederick over slightly higher rated Escobar and Williams. Obviously they got the last 2 guys in rounds 2 and 3. But they were higher on their board than Fred.

Based on last year, it appears that they do push need a bit over pure BPA. And they traded down instead of taking a couple of players that were rated materially earlier than their draft spot, presumably because they didn't see the need of that spot in round 1. Now if they had not been able to trade back last year, I wonder if they would have taken Floyd or Patterson. Probably Floyd, but we'll never know.

Any trade up is an epic fail. There is no need to give up a 2nd or 3rd for ANY player this year.
I am so hoping Jerry does what you prescribe....I would really hate losing out on Donald. If someone drafts him ahead of the Bears, I can understand that. But it will really suck if he is available at 12 or 13 and the Boys jump up ahead of the Bears and take him

Look I love Donald too, and IF we do move up...I hope it's for him. However, the Cowboys are 1 not player away from the SuperBowl. This team cannot give up quality picks for shiny toys. Sit tight or even trade down. Build some depth along the lines and address need positions.

Right now, I am happy to sit tight and take Barr.

I will post some draft predictions soon...

:goodposting:

With Romo's contract, other veterans with deferred salary, and the need to resign Dez and Tyrion Smith, the Cowboys are about 2 years from being able to sign any significant free agents. To add talent, they have to do it through the draft. Since this is a very deep draft, the key is to trade down and get more picks rather than trade up and get fewer picks.

but

that assumes you are not just the right player away

jerry thinks we are

because you see if we win 1 more game we make the playoffs, and jerry thinks once in the playoffs we can pull a NYG or a Ravens and make a maical run to the super bowl

we just need 1 player to get 1 win and the super bowl is ours!!!!!!

i personally think that is all hogwash

Each year I post some of my draft predictions based on team needs, reading various stories around the league and from the very little info I get from an internet friend who is a scout from an AFC team. I've had a couple of good years prediction wise and then there was last year...don't think I had any nailed. I usually give a few options by round. I would love to see some of your predictions as well...

My preference is listed first...

- Round 1 (Aaron Donald, Anthony Barr, Zack Martin, Odell Beckham)

- Round 2 (Scott Crichton, Gabe Jackson, Dominque Easley, Jarvis Landry)

- Round 3 (Kareem Martin, Christian Jones, Cyril Richardson, Dakota Dozier)

- Round 4 (Dion Bailey, Anthony Johnson, Ed Reynolds, Will Sutton)

- Round 5 (Lamin Barrow, Adrian Hubbard, Kenny Ladler, Devon Kennard)

- Round 6 (Ahmad Dixon, David Fales, Jay Bromley, Aaron Murray)

- Round 7 (Kevin Graf, Tre Boston, Garrett Scott, Will Smith)

i swear if they end up with manziel I'll order a jersey the day the become available and i'll be all in on the dooshbag

If Manziel is there I think they HAVE to take him for the future. Otherwise just take BPA on defense unless there's a nice trade down. Technically if Manziel is there and a great trade down exists that might be interesting too. If Donald is there he's a pretty strong selection too of course.

Donald or Johnny ... getting more likely one makes it. Get by TEN and barring trade or surprise ... noone else takes QB.

safety or Johnny ... or a draft haul from a team like Cleveland? Any chance we take a CB? Nah ... it's Johnny...

Ok ... I don't think we can win this year so Manziel made sense to prepare for the rebuild but I'm good with this. Surprised we didn't take the top safety or BP DL or LB but this is a pretty strong starting OL with Martin maybe sliding in at RT if we let Free walk down the road: LT Tyron Smith LG Ronald Leary C Travis Frederick RG Zack Martin RT Doug Free

Hey, congrats.

Great pick IMHO.

You're building the interior of your O-Line and DeMarco Murray should benefit greatly.

Love Zack Martin.

He'll be a muliple Pro Bowler.

Good pick Jerra.

I can't believe it wasn't a disaster. I would have traded down and picked DL for an extra pick personally, but I like Martin with Fred and Ty on the OL for the future.

Im glad they did not pick Manziel, I can envision him as a petulant child on the sidelines being a distraction not wanting to learn from Romo for the next 2-3 years. Do you think that Free would move to guard and they would keep Zack Martin as RT?

So happy they went 'trenches' instead of trying to make a splash.

OT was the right call here. Rest of draft go D(unless value OT falls to us).

I believe we were uber high on Easley. Crichton would be perfect. Lawrence too maybe, but I'm not a fan. There are plenty of DT's still.
