I'm on the record here as liking Marcus Smith, but hadn't heard much talk of him as a 1st round pick, more of a mid 2nd.

#$@!

Would rather have sooooo many other players. We did need defense, and he can pass rush, but @#$! Think we reached here. Love him mid second.

He might be the next Bruce Smith... but when no other team thinks that - you wait to take him, right? They could easily have had Marquise Lee and taken Smith with the next pick!

Marcus Smith, DE/OLB, Louisville
Height: 6-3. Weight: 251.
40 Time: 4.68.
Projected Round (2014): 1-3.

5/5/14: In a draft that lacks pass-rushing talent, Smith has had a late rise. Some feel he could go late in the first round.

The Cardinals had a tough defense in 2013, and Smith was the leader of the unit. He was the American Conference Defensive Player of the Year as he finished the season with 14.5 sacks for Louisville. Smith also had 42 tackles with 18.5 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and three passes broken up. The senior's sack total put him second in the nation behind only Stanford's Trent Murphy.

Smith had multi-sack games against Florida International, Rutgers, South Florida, Connecticut and Miami. He then held his own at the Senior Bowl and did well at the Combine. Smith's stock has been rising down the home stretch.

Smith collected four sacks and 5.5 sacks as a junior and sophomore, respectively. He played defensive end for the Cardinals, but in the NFL, he will have to move to outside linebacker. Smith would fit best as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.

Personal: Son of Elba Wilson and Marcus Smith. Administration major.

@ZBerm: Eagles take Louisville pass rusher Marcus Smith. 6-foot-3, 251 pounds, 34-inch arms, 4.68 40-yard dash.

@caplannfl: #Eagles love this size, speed, athleticism. Was told he would go late first, early 2nd.

@NFL_CFB: #Eagles take Marcus Smith w/ 26th pick. http://t.co/WNjMeCZUvg draft profile: http://t.co/u3z79pJrp8

@Jeff_McLane: Marcus Smith is from Louisville. Not many had him going 1st round, but #Eagles obviously like him. Definitely needed to address pass rush.

@evansilva: #Eagles rookie OLB Marcus Smith is 6'3/251 with 34-inch arms. 14.5 sacks last year at Louisville. Played 70% of snaps standing up.

@ZBerm: Pass rusher was Eagles biggest need. Smith was No. 2 in college football with 14.5 sacks, AAC defensive player of the year.

@SheilKapadia: Eagles pick Louisville OLB Marcus Smith. Didn't know where he'd go, but like him. Full breakdown with video: http://t.co/dlOaAVvecz

@SheilKapadia: Smith is 6-3, 251. Second in nation with 14.5 sacks last year. 34-inch arms, recruited to Louisville as a QB. Good athlete.

Take a look at some of his film here, I think you'll like what you see:

http://draftbreakdown.com/players/marcus-smith

He's explosive, he has a good closing burst. Louisville used him in a bunch of different ways, 3 point stance, he rushed from both sides and up the middle. Little bit of 2 point stance as well. He can drop and cover, I didn't see a heap of it but he looked pretty natural in what I did see. Has a inside spin as a decent counter move as well.

Needs to work on his lower body strength, he doesn't have the leverage to shorten the corner (see Brandon Graham for a good example), there are a few Mamulas in his film. Adding some strength will help him set the edge better against the run as well.

I think he'll be a part time player, as a rush specialist this year and he should help there.

I like the player, but unless all the pundits are wrong they could have traded down again and still got him.

So a proto-typical 3-4 rush OLB, with solid college production and good measurables. What don't we like again?

Said he was a second round guy--like the second round wasn't 7 picks away from ours. Right now people are mad cause they haven't heard his name.

Agree, I like him. Was one of those guys I wasn't sure was a 1st rounder, but didn't think he'd last till our 2nd round pick.
