Just think Smith is a second rounder, not that he isn't a good player. Would rather have had Lee or many others, but it's not Chris Gokong bad. And we did need a pass rush, which he brings.

Marcus Smith

Pros:

Versatile, hybrid style line backer capable of pressuring the pocket from any spot on the field.

Very good initial burst off the line with quickness to the edge

Knack for causing sack-fumbles (4 forced fumbles in 2013)

Very effective on inside stunts (similar to Aldon Smith)

Above average athleticism with some experience in coverage

Excels in deflecting passes at line of scrimmage

Cons:

Needs to develop more of a repertoire of pass rushing moves

Will benefit from a year or two in an NFL strength program - needs to add bulk

Arm length suggests he should have easier time disengaging blockers but Smith needs to refine technique and learn to play with that advantage

One year major producer in college

Inconsistent. Will appear dominant in some games and disappear in others.

@lawlornfl: Here's a quick take on the #Eagles selection of OLB Marcus Smith. http://t.co/0RgP1qTQSl

@GeoffMosherCSN: Chip: "he's a big kid...has a huge upside."

@GeoffMosherCSN: Chip. "We thought adding a pass rusher was important to us."

@GeoffMosherCSN: Admits he's new to position, compares to lane Johnson as raw prospect whose best years are ahead.

@GeoffMosherCSN: Chip said they had 6 guys in mind at 22, all were taken.

@GeoffMosherCSN: Chip said he thought about trading up for some of those 6 but teams wanted too much.

Liking what Im reading. The more I think they used up all 10mins there. They wanted to trade abd no one bit. so take the guy they want and wont be there at 54.

Hey... I like the guy. Just thought we could have gotten Lee as well... no chance we get him now.
I guess we could package the extra 3rd t move at some point but doubt we could get him where as the guy we drafted would have most likely been there.....will see I guess.

Second round was 7 picks away.
Not going to hate on the guy, but Lee and Roby are more what I wanted. But what do I know! And not talking 2.01, 7 picks away. Could see us moving from 54 up to the low 40s to get him and that might cost a 4th.

Nevertheless, if they like him OK! We need a LB. We need a pass rush. Don't think he was worth 26, but he can still be a valuable piece for the team.

@GeoffMosherCSN: Chip emphasized that lville played a 3-4 and 4-3 while Marcus was there. Not a projection-type pick. He has experience as 34 OLB.

Marcus Smith is a pretty exciting edge player. The important thing ultimately is 'can this kid play?' They have Connor Barwin on one side and Trent Cole, who will turn 32 years old, on the other. In that scheme he's a perfect fit. The pick attacks an area of need for the Eagles, and they got some extra picks in the process." -- Mike Mayock

Well, maybe we can add Robinson in the second. Lee won't drop and he's Robinson is next on my wr draft list.
Lee, Latimer, Adams for me... Robinson has good size though.

There are lots of good WR options. At 26 would have grabbed Roby or one of them, but pass rush was the biggest need so have to trust that process.

@lawlornfl: On April 17th I wrote "The Case for Marcus Smith". Talked about him as a target if the #Eagles moved back in the 1st. http://t.co/a0cbfsv1Qr
This is a great write-up with video.
Wow. I feel much, much better about this pick. I am glad we went defense, and have been really wanting a pass rush. Just thought of Smith as a mid-second rounder.

Maybe not as much of a reach as I thought, he looks solid and a good fit for the scheme.

I don't know anything about the guy, but I am on board with the pick.

- we all wanted a playmaker on D

- he is versatile

- position fills a need

- I would guess he is a smart football player since he played QB

- who cares where he was projected. 2nd round was a few picks away. This isn't the old staff. You can argue some moves this offseason, but they have yet to show on the field we can't trust them.

- we got him and a 3rd round pick in the 1st!!

@GeoffMosherCSN: Smith said he models his game after Osi, Aldon Smith and Clay Matthews.

@GeoffMosherCSN: Smith thinks he was only a second round pick because of a poor junior season. Just four sacks.

It really was well put together. He seems raw and big with high upside. Initially he'll be used on passing downs. This is what we needed and we got a 3 back.

Just about every WR all of us wanted are still available as well.

I wonder if the trade with Miami was discussed after they traded back. Smith or Jordan? Have to assume they will now not pursue Jordan.

This is what I think as well. If he turns out to be an above average pass rusher in two years, the pick will be worth it. Overall I think people make too much of guys being picked 10 spots too early or whatever. Even in the first round 30-40% of the players will disappoint if not outright bust, so if there's a guy you believe in and you want for your team and you think he won't be there next time you pick then just take him and be done with it.

A lot of WRs left. Id be happy if they moved up tomorrow to grab Lattimer or Lee.
There's too many left to move up IMO
Off the top of my head though Lattimer and Lee are the last of guys projected with first round talent though. I think there's a fair drop off to the likes of Allen Robinson, Jordan Matthews etc, guys who come with more pronounced limitations to go with their strengths.

Not happy with the pick, flat not a first round talent IMO. Liked the trade though, hoping for some better picks tomorrow with plenty of quality still on the board.

In other word, not a flashy put but killed 2 birds with 1 stone.

Lot of talk Raider were interested in Smith, going back to Louisville's Pro Day. A lot of people who do multi-round mock for teams had Smith going to OAK at top of the 2nd.

If Smith was a reach, he was by maybe 10 picks, which really means he wasn't a reach at all. Add in that he was a pass rusher......One could argue there were three top flight edge rushers, and they are all gone now.

With Pryor and Clinton-Dix gone, especially, I kind of like the pick.

I wonder who the six players were that Kelly mentioned were gone that caused them to deal down? Fuller, HaHa, Pryor, Barr, Beckham probably, but who was the sixth?

Sports talk radio is absolute gold today. People giving up the season tickets and ####. :lmao:
F'n drama queens. I wasn't a huge fan of the pick, but it fit a need. My worry is that he's a one year wonder since his Jr year was mediocre.
Oh noes, R Diddy had him as a 3rd rounder!!!! Chip sucks!! Eagles suck!!!

Daniel Jeremiah from NFL.com had him going, and this is from mid-April:

I've talked to 2 GM's in the last week that swear Smith will be gone by pick 35

12:18am - 14 Apr 14

Just read a 2nd round mock that has 4 DEs going before Eagles next pick, so he could be right.
