Ash, are you seeing anything as to why there are so few running lanes? Last year, there were wide-open holes everywhere. Obviously the OL issues are probably the biggest piece, but I'm wondering what the loss of DeSean and very little read-option might mean in terms of the spacing and making it easier to defend the run.
I don't think the WRs have much to do with it. We lost one guy who is a home run threat on every play but having Maclin back in his place isn't too much of a drop off there. I've been a Maclin critic in the past but he's doing all the right things on the field so far this year. Cooper's still Cooper. Avant was one of my favourite Eagles for a long time, but Matthews is an upgrade even now and should continue to improve. Ertz is also improved over last year as well. Throw in Sproles and as a unit the group of pass catchers is improved overall, including the ability to stretch the field.
I don't see much difference in the way teams are playing coverage against us. On base downs its' mostly still single high man, or Cover 3 type looks with the odd variation here and there. Teams would at times shade the S to Jackson last year but that's about it.
Mostly I think it's down to inferior personnel due to injuries and lack of continuity in the lineup. Lane Johnson is a very good run blocker overall but excels at driving his man down the line and opening up big cutback lanes. In his place we have Gardner, a 3rd string player who is struggling to prevent his man having an impact on most plays. Mathis is one of the best in the league (Kelce is also on the list) at getting to and controlling his man at the 2nd level. He does a great job of engaging and then working his body into position between the defender and the ball carrier. In his place we have Kelly, who's mostly holding his own on inline blocks but nowhere near as effective at controlling a 2nd level defender. We now have Molk in place of Kelce, so another drop off as far as effectiveness at 2nd level blocks there. Molk's real problems are in pass protection.
The Inside Zone plays are built on two combination blocks inside, the trick is to have two combo blocks using two players each to get control of a DL, then one man passing off and getting to the 2nd level to control a LB. Aside from the talent question that takes time to build up the understanding between guys of who leaves that double team and when. Before Kelce's injury the only two guys on the line who'd played beside each other last year were him and Heremanns, now there's nobody left who's built up that understanding with the player beside him.
Not sure if I'm over analysing, I'll have to take a better look but I think teams might be using some different fronts that make it harder to make those combo blocks work as well.
The Inside Zone was where the yards were last year, they didn't consistently run outside all that well.
Getting Tobin in for Gardner, then Johnson in for Kelly over the next couple of weeks should help, but it will probably still be tough work for a while.
The read option with the QB run I think is a novelty that is kind of passing as defenses now understand it and it comes back to being something that will pop up here and there and work at times but not much more than that. I'm quite interested to see how we defend it this week actually. Overall I've seen quite a bit of teams using the
scrape exchange technique against us which makes it hard to leave that unblocked defender as he now doesn't have contain responsibility and is free to crash inside after the ball carrier. If the QB does pull the ball then he's picked up by the LB who has taken over the contain role. I think that development is what led to the Casey block on the split zone plays where Casey crosses the formation and takes the guy crashing inside.
It does mean it's more difficult now to get a numbers advantage by leaving a DL unblocked but it does have the effect of taking a LB in the opposite direction to the play. With our offense I think things have mostly shifted to run/pass option rather than run/run option. I would love to see a read option with Sproles and McCoy crossing in opposite directions though, and maybe a pop pass option off that.
