No pass rush + below average corners = bad pass D.

Their best pass rusher is a bad scheme fit and only gets 20 snaps a game (Curry). Their best CB is a 5'10" slot corner and only gets 20 snaps a game (Boykin).

If Boykin plays more snaps, the TOs may go up as he has great hands for a CB. Kendricks being hurt also affects FP because he's their best blitzing LB, but he should be back soon.

They blitz a lot, and it's kind of pathetic they only have 3 sacks so far. However, the inside blitz they did against Indy definitely helped them win that game, just more with disruption than turnovers.

I said coming into the season that the Niners were either going to finish 11-5 or 5-11. Pretty sure this is the week we figure out which it is.

I tend to agree with this. Honestly not expecting a close game. But I'm also not really sure who is going to blow out who.

Obviously was on purpose, but wonder if it was the team or hotel that set it up or just some fan staying in the hotel.

 
Chip called a bad game. We can't run the ball at all. Foles has played one good game against a bad defense. Cooper has been quietly brutal. Doesn't feel like a 3-1 team.

Most of that can be attributed to missing your entire OL practically.

Cooper has to catch something though.

We're unable to run the ball and turning it over. 2 things we didn't do last year.

 
There for the taking with the offense doing absolutely nothing.

Let them kick the FG and get your ####### defense off the field for once. They've been out there the whole game.

Wasn't expecting a win but it's tougher to take because they should've won this ####### game.

IMO it's got lots to do with the O Line. No time to throw, not many lanes open, and Foles is getting killed back there. Get Johnson back next week, that helps some.

hate to say it but was i the only one who saw questionable penalty after questionable penalty on the eagles? they got hosed. the offense sucked but was shackled many times by bad calls. should have won this game easily

Cooper had to catch that ball IMO. The 3rd and 4th down calls are all gonna be what's talked about but Cooper had to catch that pass.

This. Foles has been hammered. McCoy is great in space, but he's had little space this year. It isn't his style to drive through a tiny gap between giant linemen and fall forward for 4 yards and it never has been.

3-1 behind this O-line is a great start to the season, and nothing to be ashamed of. It will get better.

 
Beginning of year we'd all be stoked of you said we'd be 3-1. Plus, they went across the country into a hostile environment and almost pulled it off. Remarkable with the line issues.

That said though, cooper is killing this team and I can't believe they paid him 25 million. That ball was right in his hands. He does this once a week.

 
Knew the circumstances would dictate how we felt. If we played a back and forth brawl with the offense scoring 3 TDs and we come up short, everyone says oh well it as in SF. With how terrible we played and still had a shot to win it, we will over analyze every mistake for the week now.

Its a ####ty loss but we get Stl next week to right the ship and Lane Johnson returns not a moment too soon.

 
Any chance Matthews takes over as the #2 over Cooper or is he strictly a slot guy for this year? He couldn't be any worse out there than Cooper right now, could he?

 
They didn't deserve to win this game, but could've. (Any different from the first four?)

Any word from Cary? He must be beat.

I don't know that it has to. I believe that this is the rule:

The play is dead and the touchdown scores the moment the ball crosses the goal line in possession of a player, or the moment the ball comes into possession of an offensive player in the end zone, having established possession by controlling the ball and having one or both feet or another part of the body on the ground.

I think that there was a play like this a few years ago that was a big controversy.

The offense scored 0 points. I mean if they had managed one f'ing field goal in the first 55 minutes of the game, we take the lead there.

It seemed to me that the offense had the same slow start it had in weeks one and two. The difference was that this time they faced an opponent that held the ball a little better, our special teams scored a couple of times (meaning fewer possessions for our offense), and then when the offense did start to find some rythm, silly turnovers (Ertz fumble). By the time the offense got enough time with the ball to make a difference, they were behind again. IE: Our offense lost several possessions through the first 3 quarters, so even though the Eagles were leading much of that time, they had less time than in previous games to find any kind of rythm. It was just a wierd game.

I have no doubt that without the Ertz fumble, we almost certainly win that game. Kelly needs to figure out why the offense keeps starting slow.

The interior line is so pathetic. This team is in trouble until Kelce gets back. I seriously have to wonder how a team with 20M in cap space has Casey Matthews as the #3 ILB and interior offensive lineman that are just happy to be there but have no business playing in a real game. Molk should be embarrassed with his interview after the game. I've never seen an offensive line get so thoroughly dominated. Pathetic.

The Saints have gone from a mediocre road team to an outright terrible road team. That was probably the best we'll see from the Cowboys this year, maybe other than when they play Jacksonville.

 
It was a weird game. Foles missed just about every deep throw he made. The one call that baffled me was the 3rd down 2 to go. Shady ran on 2nd down and picked up decent yardage to get to the 2. IMO I would have ran it again knowing I would go for it on 4th down. In that situation we clearly had momentum.

But WOW where would this team be without Jenkins and Sproles. Saints are the Eagles MVP at this point in the season.

I have no issues with the way our D played yesteday given how bad the offesne was.

Just as I mentioned here after the Kelce injury...you can only lose so much OL before it all comes apart. There's not a single team in this league that can lose that much upfront and still look productive against a D like SF.

You're going to hear a TON of this today and its all hindsight. The passing game is what brought us down there and it seemed like Nick finally got into a groove. Shady was looking awful in just about every way yesterday--he couldnt even block well. His last 27 carriers he has 29 yards. Had they chose to run the ball on that 3rd down it more than likely wouldnt have gone no where IMO

Eagles had two plays to gain 1.5 yards, plus they needed to let time run off. McCoy is a great goalline back. Always seems to find a crease to dive through. Absolutely horrid play calling.

There is a "Casey Matthews" type of back-up on every single NFL team and just about every NFL team is under the cap. Matthews was also going to be cut but season ending injuries to Goode and Long kept him on the roster. I dont think people understand just how many injuries we have--there's been a ton

This is it IMO. The OL has to improve, period. Getting Lane back this wee should help out a little bit. We have to get to this bye week with no more injuries IMO

 
It was a game we weren't expecting to win, and the way we played, we had no business winning it.

Let's see how/if we bounce-back strong against the Rams at home, next week.

 
Good and Bad From Sunday

There are positive and negative angles to all NFL games. Since the Eagles lost on Sunday, lets start with the bad stuff.

* Blocking Notice I didnt just single out the OL. Zach Ertz was called for holding on a run play. Shady McCoy got run over once by a blitzer. On another play late in the game, he failed to get outside quick enough and let the blitzer hurry Foles. Bradley Fletcher had a terrible block on the final punt return of the game. He got his hands on the back of the gunner and drew a flag. There was barely any contact, but the point is there should have been NONE. When you see the guys name on his jerseydo not touch. Nothing good will come of that. The Eagles should have been close to midfield, but that backed them up to the 30.

The OL did have a rough day. Jason Peters got beat right after Fletchers mistake and that put the offense back even farther. Ugh. Todd Herremans was once badly beaten to the inside. This isnt all about Tobin and Molk. The whole Eagles team did a poor job of blocking on Sunday.

* Physicality This ties into blocking, but then goes beyond it. Anquan Boldin caught a pass short of the sticks on 3rd down. He didnt hesitate, instead running right at Nate Allen and bowling him over. The Niners have some grown ### men on their team and you arent going to block or tackle them unless you are a strong, rugged individual. Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde got way too many yards after contact. Receivers too. The Eagles didnt match the Niners level of physicality.

* The passing game This is more than Nick Foles. Riley Cooper had the go-ahead TD go through his hands. You simply have to make that catch. Foles did have a poor game. He made questionable decisions and then was off-target way too much. I thought the Eagles focused on downfield plays too much. Im not sure how much of that was Foles and how much Chip Kelly. The blocking for the passing game was obviously a factor.

The Eagles got very little in the way of RAC yards. They did get fumbles from Cooper and Ertz, but limited yards. Receivers have to make something happen when they get the ball on quick throws.

* The run game Many of you wanted Chip Kelly to run on 3rd/goal from the 2. No way. The Niners were in a goal line defense at that point. The Eagles werent getting any push against their base. How on Earth do you expect them to get push against the GL defense?

The run game is a mess right now. The plays Kelly is calling are not working. Shady has no room to run. He sometimes makes things worse by trying to go outside and get the big play. Better to get upfield for 2 or 3 yards than go wide for 0. The biggest problem is the blocking. Most of that goes on the OL, but the TEs and WRs are not helping matters.

It is crucial to get the run game fixed. You must stick with it to balance out the playbook and make the defense honest. Weve all see what happens when they focus on just the pass and that isnt pretty.

* Run defense If you take away Kaeps 58 yards on the ground, SF still ran for 160. Unacceptable. My biggest issue is that the Eagles gave up the edge too often. Setting the edge is a huge priority for the Eagles defense. SF got the D in some creative looks and then ran to the outside. It wasnt always easy to tell which player was at fault.

This isnt about an individual. The Eagles defense must do a better job fo funneling runs to the middle. OLBs, DEs and DBs all had a hand in the sloppy defense.

* * * * *

And now for some good.

* Special Teams The Eagles have won the STs battle in 3 of 4 games this year. They are getting impact plays. I would guess you have to go back to 2001 or 2002 to see this kind of play, and Im not sure even those units were this good.

- Blocked FG

- Blocked punt for a TD

- 2 FGs of more than 50 yards

- Game-winning FG

- KOR for a TD

- PR for a TD

That seems like a seasons worth of big plays. And we just finished Week 4. Great job by Dave Fipp and his players.

Darren Sproles has been an amazing addition. He has more PR yards after 4 weeks (200) than the Eagles had all of last year. That stat just blows me away.

* Pass rush The Eagles hadnt sacked the QB in 2 games. Yesterday they got 4. Actually 5, but they took one off the board when accepting a penalty. The Eagles pass rush was outstanding on Sunday. They regularly got pressure on Kaepernick and forced him to move. He burned them a time or two, but thats just part of his game.

Sacks really are a complicated stat. Kirk Cousins got rid of the ball quickly. The Eagles got some pressure on him, but no sacks. Kaep tends to hold onto the ball and look for big plays. The Eagles were able to get to him. If the QB focused on getting the ball out quickly, there just isnt much youre going to do about it. The Eagles were able to take advantage of a QB who doesnt do that.

* Coverage I havent re-watched the game, but I felt like the DBs did a good job. You have to give credit to the Niners receivers for making some incredible catches. And Kaep made some amazing throws. Anquan Boldin might be slow and 200 years old, but he can still come up big on 3rd downs. The Eagles saw that yesterday.

* Toughness Last year the Eagles had 2 awful offensive games. They lost 17-3 to Dallas and 15-7 to the Giants. Yesterday the Eagles went on the road to SF and lost 26-21. And they had a chance to win at the end. Good teams find a way to stay in games even when things are going very wrong for them. Weve seen this from Eagles opponents plenty of times over the years.

There is no question that the current Eagles team is having some issues. But the team is still finding ways to stay in games. That shows a kind of mental and emotional toughness, something that can often pay off in big games late in the year. Anyone can win with their A-game. How do you do when things arent going your way? Can you stay in games? Can you still find a way to win?
