***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (4 Viewers)

Portugal is lacking talent compared to 2002 IMO. Sure they have one of the two best players in the world playing for them, but we know that those players can disappear in World Cup matches.
Have you SEEN our LB and RB?
I've seen CR7 play poorly and go into head-case land against lesser players. I think a draw and possible win there is doable.

If we dont' beat Ghana in the opening game, the tourney is ovah and the US will crater, possibly with 0 points. If we get the 3 in the first game, we can try and stifle Portugal for a draw at the minimum. It will be a tough road, but not insurmountable.

@celebrityhottub: Meanwhile, an Auburn fan tells a very disinterested Burger King cashier that the SEC West is the real Group of Death.

You guys are right though, possibly the worst draw for us, but if we feel we are top 15 team in the world, that means we should beat Ghana and be even with Portugal. Staying tight with GER or even snatching a lucky (or pity) draw could happen.

The good.

We get the other relatively low team early. With this game order there's less chance of 0-2 vs 0-2 which would suck.

As bad draws go there are at least some advantages.

These are all teams we know - it'll be interesting to see what kind of adjustments Klinsmann makes against Ghana - we've got tape there.

Germany of course has many fans in Brazil and Argentina ;) and they generally travel well. But at least they are a neighboring country.

Portugal has the language tie with Brazil - they'll have a lot of support there I am sure. That's probably the worst aspect of drawing them.

Ghana has our number but as I say above let's see what we do with a different coach.

The downside is of course that these are 3 tough teams.

The upside is that this is the ultimate measuring stick for the USA.

If we get out of the group there's no luck about it.

And if we get out of the group we are at least in the favorable half of the draw. Get through this and we are a very real contender for a spot in the semi-finals.

Portugal is terrible, I'm not sure what the big to-do is with them. Gutless team.

Ghana is going to be a very difficult opening match. If U.S. can draw or win, game on.

Germany will thin that half the US team are Germans that couldn't crack their national team. I hope that a) makes them underestimate us, and b) puts a chip on the German-American players' shoulders that will fight tooth and nail to hang with their countrymen.

Germany is dangerous in all facets, but they are very dangerous on set-pieces. The US attacks set-pieces well, but doesn't defend them as well. That should be a focus in training I imagine. Conditioning and prep for the travel, heat, and humidity will also be huge concerns. Germany may also wilt in Game 3 if they've locked down 6 points through the first two games.

Group C - total rank 67

Group H - total rank 92

I though Australia was ranked like 59th. How does Group B rank so low with them in the draw?
These ranks are just amongst the 32 teams. It's also the average of the rankings on that basis in FIFA, ELO, and SPI - they work out to be 30th. The other 3 combine to be 17.

Our group is stronger overall but I think B has a better top 3. I mean the two finalists in the same group? Sucks to be Chile.

Ballack a little to smug - I don't think he thinks much of the US team.
Honestly would you if you were in his shoes? The talent differential is pretty staggering.
No doubt but it's just funny to see how confident the Germans are. He said something like it will be a short WC for the US - probably right though.
I don't think he is smug. I think he is just being honest in a typical German fashion.

Agree, it comes across as smug though if you don't know better

Interesting that people speculting the Brits will be happy with their draw. I'm pretty happy with Italy's draw, to be honest. England just isn't that good.

With any other coach, even Bradley, I'd think we'd be cooked in this group.

With JK - I think we have a heckuva opportunity here.

While the group sucks, the matches come in the best possible order.

Can pull out a W vs Ghana

Hope for a draw vs Portugal

If Germany has clinched, might be able to sneak out a draw

Gotta hope for 5 points at most, but it all hinges on the match vs Ghana

Going back to 1994, Germany has only won the first 2 games in the group stage once and that was at home in 2006.

I have to admit. This could be an interesting scenario. Would the Germans rest some key players with the idea of giving JK the best possible chance at a result?
