***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

The ref just gave Valencia and Sterling straight reds :lmao:
Those carry over into the WC, no?
Highly doubt it but I'm not certain
I don't know either - but aren't there a few players suspended for the first game already? I thought those were from previous cards - maybe in the qualifying process?
Yes. Suspensions carry over from sanctioned qualifiers but accumulated yellows do not. Suspensions from friendlies don't matter.

It was a pretty OTT tackle, especially for a friendly one week before the tournament.

Ghanian witch doctor claims responsibility for Ronaldo's 'injury'.

A traditional priest from Ghana has said that he is behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury problems, which “can never be cured by any medic”.

The Real Madrid and Portugal star is suffering from tendonitis and is set to miss out on his country’s pre-World Cup friendlies against Mexico and Ireland, though Nana Kwaku Bonsam, who describes himself as a traditional priest, has claimed responsibility for the Ballon d’Or winner’s plight, which he has claimed to be “spiritual”.

“I know what Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury is about, I’m working on him,” the witchdoctor told Ghanaian radio station Angel FM.

“I am very serious about it. Last week, I went around looking for four dogs and I got them to be used in manufacturing a special spirit called ‘Kahwiri Kapam’.

“I said it four months ago that I will work on Cristiano Ronaldo and rule him out of the World Cup or at least prevent him from playing against Ghana and the best thing I can do is to keep him out though injury.

“This injury can never be cured by any medic, they can never see what is causing the injury because it is spiritual. Today, it is his knee, tomorrow it is thigh, next day it is something else.”

Ghana are due to play Portugal on June 26 in Brasilia, in what will be their final match of Group G, which also includes Germany and USA.
Anyone have a lock of Phillipp Lahm's hair or something we could send him?

according to fox trax: 81

NO IMPACTRaheem Sterling is distraught. His challenge was late, but he did get the ball, and Valencia was not injured. That was all Valencia there, and to my mind there was no need for Sterling to get sent off there. To be clear, this red card will have no impact on the World Cup.
late tackle and a little from behind but got the ball and didnt hit valencia. Not sure why Sterling got the red but really only saw the GIF posted in the soccer thread. Valencia should have got the red.

I don't mind the ref being a little loose with the reds a week before the Cup. No reason to leave Sterling out there to take a cheap shot from an Ecuadorian player later in the game, or give one out himself in retaliation. A double red cools the tempers down somewhat on both sides.

I agree

You dont think it would have riled up England a little by giving an undeserved red?

I see your point just dont think thats for the ref to decide. England Mgr should sub him if they think this is an issue. Refs need to call the game the same no matter if its a WC Final, qualifier, MLS game or friendly.

But since it wont cause anyone to miss WC games then ok i guess....

I jut watched the next episode in the March To Brazil series. This one focused on media day in NY and the build up to the Turkey game.

Besler and Beckerman were the two players most focused on.

Apologies if these were posted already, but I'm really enjoying the FIFA team profiles on YouTube. Not too in depth tactically, but some good history of each team and their qualification paths.

Here's the USA profile, there are many others out there.

Tickets have surpassed 41k for the last US friendly. This should easily break the 44,428 record for a friendly attendance in the south east of the US (also in Jacksonville).

Yeah I know its just a friendly but if the US just drew with Luxembourgh at home like Italy just did, we would be pretty concerned I bet.

Lux is ranked almost 30 spots lower than Azerbaijan.

Most popular month to be born for 2014 WC players: February - 79 players, January - 74 (least popular: November 48, October 49, December 49 )

If you want a WC player, plan your pregnancies accordingly.

Most popular birthday: February 5, February 13, and February 14 - each have 7 players celebrating birthdays on those dates

Most popular birth date: January 8, 1986; April 10, 1986; April 23, 1987; September 1, 1989; October 3, 1983; and November 28, 1985 - each date had 3 players born.

The bigger kids get the most attention. The sport, like several others, leaves a lot of talent behind because of the age group structures.

Outliers has a part in the book about birthdays in soccer/honkey. January first being the age cutoff for a lot of leagues means the kids born early in the year have an advantage.

:lmao: Is there a section for Basketball/blackies?

I've read the book, and agree with the premise - I was just messing around with the WC rosters, and found it interesting that the data supports the theory even in a world wide sport, where we are talking about some of the best players in the sport.

Jose Mourinho has picked Italy to win the World Cup.

Great call, but they have a difficult road to do it, if they do. But one thing is certain, you never count out an Italian team

Crazy fact: Italy has only lost 2 games within the 90 minutes, in the FOUR YEARS that Prandelli has been coach in all competitions.

Then its a good thing MLS is getting that team in nearby Atlanta.
Orlando is even closer.
I think Miami too as Miami and Atlanta are almost the same distance from Jacksonville.
Now you guys are just making #### up.

This has been a bad week and this list does not even reflect Oxlade-Chamberlain who might be out as well. I don't know Ghana's depth well enough to know the affect of starter Akaminko getting hurt.

Some nasty stuff :(

=================================

World Cup Injury Casualties:

May 31. Luis Montes (Mexico) suffered a broken leg minutes after scoring against Ecuador and will miss the World Cup. Segundo Castillo injured his knee in the collision that broke Montes' leg will go to the World Cup despite being ruled out for three weeks.

May 31. Riccardo Montolivo (Italy) broke his leg in a challenge by defender Alex Pearce in the Azzurri's match with Ireland in London and was lost for the World Cup.

May 31. Jerry Akaminko (Ghana) broke his ankle suffered in stoppage time of the Black Stars' 1-0 loss to the Netherlands and was dropped from their World Cup team.

May 29. Alvaro Saborio (Costa Rica), one of just three holdovers from the Ticos' 2006 World Cup roster, fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot at practice and will be sidelined 3-4 months, missing much of the MLS regular season with Real Salt Lake.

May 28. Rafael van der Vaart (Netherlands) suffered a calf strain in his right leg in training and was dropped from the Oranje's World Cup on days after joining the team after helping Hamburg avoid relegation in the German promotion-relegation playoffs.

with the red card stuff - pretty sure that FIFA clears all cards ahead of the first game - that is all teams start with a clean slate regardless of the card situation before.

Hmm, I agree that they all start with a clean slate but I think if you got a red card in the last qualifier, you would have to sit out the first game of WC.

I might be making that up but for some reason I thought there is a player this year who is affected by that.

Ok I did not make it up. :)

Yeah, Atlanta and Miami are both roughly 5 hours away. Tampa is a little closer (considerably closer mileage wise but there's no easy path between the two).. Universal is about 2 hours away with an extra half hour to Disney, Savannah is also roughly 2 hours away.
