Does Alves get benched? Julio Caesar?

Who's available? Maicon?
Maiconhad a phenomenal resurgence at Roma this year...showed he still has pace and still delivers lethal crosses...he definitely wouldn't be caught "out"nearly as much as Alves; more position discipline.

Good thing Oscar scored, Brazil deserved to win, but not on that penalty
But does he get the opportunity if it was still 1-1?
Unknowable
I'm going to speculate that Croatia would have been a little tighter at the back had they been protecting a point rather than chasing a point.
It was practically an empty netter at the end of a hockey game. They were pressing hard in hail marry mode.
Still, Oscar knocked that layup out of the park though, am I right?
I think 90% of the keepers in the WC get to that shot to at least parry it. It was a toe poke from the top of the box and hardly a bullet.
The defender blocked his view
I agree he likely did but his reaction was still god awful slow. This was not a laser beam by any means. It bounced twice before going in. His dive was very slow imo

Croatia deserved better. Brazil looked too loose, sloppy and not paeying with precision. Julio Cesar may cost them a cup if they don't tighten up their midfield and defensive wingback play.

The penalty call was terrible, really inexcusable. The Croatia goalie was piss poor on both non penalty goals. I think any goalie starting in any of the top 4 leagues in Europe would haver done better than he today.

Brazil often starts slow in world cups. The question is will they gel and get geared up to play as a team in time? If they do, they win. If not a team with lesser talent but more cohesion can take them out.

Not for Oscar's, the defender ran across Oscar after he kicked it. the toe poke on the run is what caught him off guard
Nothing caught him off guard. He just has no mobility. He demonstrated it the whole game. It was painful to watch. It's like he was moving in clay.

I think Germany (and maybe Spain) have both more talent and more cohesion. They don't have homefield advantage though.

From the game today:

- Croatia didn't look terrible.

- Brazil was given that penalty call. Not a penalty.

- Croatia's attack when 2-1 in the waning minutes was pretty tough.

- Brazil should have been called for a foul before scoring their 3rd goal.

- Brazil wins but score should have been 2-1.

How quick is the hook in these things? Croatia keeper looked clueless to everyone and they only get 3 games to decide this. Can they bench him over 1 game realistically?

If they have a viable alternative (I'm certainly not an expert on the back end of the Croatia roster) they have to play him. The guy who played today was atrocious.

They have Subasic, who is the guy keeping Argentina's #1 on the bench at Monaco.
The Croat manager Niko Kovac is very inexperienced. His first senior level coaching kid was in the playoffs against Iceland. Kovac also played alongside Pletikosa on the national team for years and may have more loyalty to his former teammate than a typical international manager.

I know nothing about the current relationship between Brazil and Portugal outside of a shared language. Will Brazilian fans in the stadiums be cheering for Portugal against US?

I thought the toe poke caught the gk by surprise, so he reacted slowly. But he sure didn't get to either of those goals too quickly

Yes, it'll be pro Portugal in that game.

That said, if the atmosphere is like today's.... Will it matter? Needs more vuvuzela imo

It would have been awesome for Brazil to lose on a Marcelo og. Who do you hate more? Marcelo, Ramos, or Pepe?

Capello had a quick hook for Robert Green in favor of Calamity James 4 years ago, although Green's howler on Dempseys goal was probably worse than anything we saw today.
Capello didn't have a regular keeper leading up to South Africa. Green was a pretty late selection as I recall. Pletikosa has been the established #1 for Croatia for over a decade.

I heard on one of the preview shows that Brasil is decidedly anti-Portugal.

Do you know different, or just assuming?

My Brazil support team has either been blowing smoke up my ### for years, or is generally pro USA soccer. I will fish for thoughts on Portugal once their hangovers wear off.

I couldn't watch live, was following along here. None of you mentioned that it was my boy Lovren who got whistled for the Fled Frop.
Well, to be fair, he's only your boy for a few more weeks before he is off to a different team. Speaking of which, have you picked a new side yet, or determined to stick it through the fire sale?

UPDATE: "Brazilians are 50/50 between Portugal and US...here in Brazil, people make fun of Portugal...they say portuguese people are slow, they say they're the worst European country :lmao: "

UPDATE2: "I'm going for US, all my friends too, they don't want Portugal to make it, because of Cristiano Ronaldo...everyone want's Neymar to be the best player"

World Cup Smartphone apps: what are you using?

I am looking for suggestions or preference for the soccer apps that you will be using during the World Cup. Maybe even your experience in using any of the ones listed below?

My preferred soccer app is OneFootball (not the Brasil one), but I do like FutMob for some things so I think I will be using both of them (at least at first). I do have the paid version of FutMob so I have been using them more and more lately (hello USLPro), but OneFootball is easily still my preference. I believe that each also provides some in-game audio for the World Cup. The MLS Matchday app looks like they will have full WC coverage as well... but I do not think I will be using that app for WC coverage as I barely use it for MLS coverage.

I have the TuneIn Radio app that I will use if I am in the car while a game is on, I am pretty sure they carry the BBC broadcast of the games by way of TalkSport. All of the games are also supposed to be available on the ESPN Radio app, but I am not really a big ESPN fan so I do not have it installed...

That being said, I did install the WatchESPN app so i could watch games when there is no TV available, or use the pitch view as a second screen on my tablet. I have not had a whole bunch of luck with that app so far for live events (especially with ChromeCast), and am hoping it is just my crappy home wifi that was the issue.

Has anyone looked into the FIFA app? Is there anything there worth checking out? Am I overlooking anything obvious? What else is out there that I should be aware of?

P.S. I usually leave a LiveScore.com window open on my desktop while games are in progress, but I am open to a better suggestion there too.
UPDATE: I broke down and installed the OneFootball Brasil version of the OneFootball app, and it is pretty great - I will dump it after the tourney, but with one minor update (player club teams) it would be the only app I use. I still see myself checking FotMob for player club info, but that is about it. I really do prefer OneFootball over all.

TuneIn Radio seemed to block TalkSport broadcast "in my country" yesterday... not sure what that was about, but they did have the ESPN Radio broadcast, so that was nice.

Oh, and Google Now has very cool World Cup support now... I am very impressed with that they are providing.

P.S. LiveScore.com has a new WC format - I am going to stick with them for when I am in the office.

ETA: WatchESPN was so far behind that it did not work as a 2nd screen for the Tactical cam... I suppose I could have paused the TV to let it catch up, but I do not trust my cable box to not stop working (which it does all the time and takes 7 minutes to re-boot :hot: )

I'll keep watching them if they play pretty. But that's hard to imagine with half the lineup gone. Having a team isn't a high priority for me.

Early in the year I was really down on Lovren but that might've been a bad call. He's actually pretty decent but he always looks like he just mugged somebody in an alley.

For scores and news, I love theScore on Android. Very nice looking app and loads much faster than the SportsCenter app. They have a full bracket and everything for the WC.

Maybe I'm just forgetting, but there seem to be more great 1st round matchups this time than I remember:

6/13, 3pm: Spain v Netherlands

6/14, 6pm: England v Italy

6/16, 12pm: Germany v Portugal

6/17, 3pm: Brazil v Mexico

6/18, 3pm: Spain v Chile

6/19, 3pm: Uruguay v England

6/23, 12pm: Netherlands v Chile

6/24, 12pm: Italy v Uruguay

Those are some tasty games.

The 4th teams are weaker, but Spain, Netherlands, Chile and Italy, England, Uruguay seem like the true groups of death to me.

My group of 30-40 Portuguese/Brazilian friends/soccer hangerouters gives me that vibe. Everyone with strong ties to Portugal or Brazil, by strong ties I mean that half weren't even born here but in Portugal or Brazil  Maybe it's different because they're here together, though...who knows

Of course, that's only my sample size and that being said, neither side is rooting for the other side's star player to do well. It was fun when Deco(Brazilian born Portuguese player) was doing well for Portugal. That always got them fired up one way or the other.

You got: Brazil
BRASILLLLLL! You’re very talented and people love your young and particular spirit. You’re always full of energy and this is why the world loves you. Now, the world is your guest and you can show why you are the best!
I want Ruud to punch Twellman in the face
oh please let this happen. Twellman is beyond worthless. And he totally blocked the camera's view when he was trying to determine if there was a foul before the 3rd goal. Noone saw it so noone could discuss on set.

With a competent ref and a better keeper, Croatia wins that game 2-0.
