Yeah so if the Swiss concede 1 couple more then Honduras can get through with a win vs Ecuador and a tie versus the Swiss.

Just sayin'

Mad Maynard: I've just about had enough of you F*&^%' ities!
Vatican Guard: But I am Swiss!
Mad Maynard: Them, too!
Thought I was the only one who saw that movie. Scotty doesn't know!
Mad Maynard: Look given the current geopolitical climate, all European countries should have a seat at the table. Except those &^&&^& Ities, I hate them Italian bastards, know what I mean.

Vinnie Jones was damn fun in it.
Wimbledon legend

The FIFA ranking are similar to NCAA basketball rankings about 2 or 3 weeks into the season. Too little data. But there are a few teams you know are pretty dominant.

Rich Coast basically just won the group didn't they? What is the tie breaker order?
If they lose to England and there's a winner of the Uruguay/Italy game, then it will be goal differential.
That's what I thought, but someone else told me head to head if it is just a 2 team tie.
That person is wrong.ETA: If Goal differential and goals scored are tied, then it would be head-to-head.
Here are the exact rules

Teams are ranked on the following criteria:

1. Greater number of points in all group matches

2. Goal difference in all group matches

3. Greater number of goals scored in all group matches

4. Greatest number of points in matches between tied teams

5. Goal difference in matches between tied teams

6. Greatest number of goals scored in matches between tied teams

7. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee
When would 5 and 6 ever come into play? If they have the same head-to-head points, they'd have the same goal difference and total goals head-to-head.

3-way tie

This tournament is making a mockery of the FIFA rankings.
I thought the FIFA rankings were the mockery?
:goodposting:

But in FIFA's defense, it simply isn't possible to have accurate rankings given the high turnover on teams (Donovan :hey: ), and infrequency that they play inter-federation games.
true, but I am not even sure they take into consideration who plays who? USA beats the Brazil C team while Netherlands lose to Germany in a Euro qualifier and the we move up and Dutch move down. Or we win in CONCACAF (which has looked good finally) and jump teams who Lose in UEFA.

And I could be wrong, I am not even sure how the rankings are determined but they dont make sense to me. But it does seem like the BCS runs the rankings.

FIFA does rank the competitions - so WC wins are worth more than Friendly wins - not sure were things like Gold Cup or European Championship rank relative to WC qualifiers.

Per wiki:

Friendly result = 1x

WC and Continental Cup qualifier = 2.5x

Continental Cup and Confederation Cup finals = 3x

WC finals = 4X

So, Costa Rica should see a nice bump here.

Formula is Result (3,1,0) * Importance (1, 2.5, 3, 4) * Strength of Opposing Team * Confederation strength

Confederation strength:

CONMEBOL/UEFA = 1

CONCACAF = 0.88

CAF/AFA = 0.86

OFC = 0.85

FIFA rankings are next to worthless. They are a nice device to stack up teams for a cursory glance, but they are worthless in that these teams play so few games together and at full strength. International soccer is pretty ####ty as it is, and a small tournament like the WC (by small meaning, just three group games and then your into knock out stages where anything can happen), it's impossible to effectively 'rank' teams in any worthwhile manner.

Playing Ecuador in a few open parlays in late game. HAve them at -147, -149 and -159

:wall: wifi connection at work has crashed!
Everything related to streaming is blocked at my workdesk. So I've been using a laptop to tap into the wifi connection provided for our "customers." This wifi is controlled by our Engineering department and evidently when they set it up, instead of pulling cables for the project they utilized a network of wires that were capped off and not being used. It seems these wires were put in place for a pending IT project which started today. IT disconnected the wifi from the cables they put out and told Engineering they would have to run wires for the wifi.

It was a fun week while I could watch. I guess I'll be getting more work done now. :kicksrock:

Data connection and the WatchESPN (or Univision) app on your smart phone?

FIFA rankings, like FIFA itself, are a necessary evil. People the world around like statistics, even made-up ones. They only take on genuine importance in seeding for the tournament draw, but they can be overcome on the field.

They just had to scroll the goal scorers under the score display. Guess they weren't expecting anyone to have 5 or more goal scorers in 1 game.

this is interesting. Never looked into it really, just always felt like wins and losses meant more then who was actually playing.

USA moves up by beating Concacaf teams. European teams move down with loses to UEFA teams. There is a reason UEFA gets more slots in the WC so the rankings just didnt seem to mesh with that.
