Shocking to me to see Italy tactically outmaneuvered by Costa Rica. I thought they'd have trouble with Costa Rica's counter, but didn't expect them to just be outplayed like that. As shocking as the Uruguay match was, this was a better performance by Costa Rica. Nothing lucky about their results.

Really impressed by the organization of Costa Rica's defense. Navas was barely tested in the second half.
Navas is a hell of a keeper-sweeper. When Costa Rica pressed and played higher, he completely shut down the balls over the top.

Also, is it just me, or did Balotelli stop trying somewhere around the 65 minute mark?

This.

All these strong performances by CONCACAF teams can't hurt the US's confidence. And you'd think Spain, England, Italy might keep Portugal's anxiety high too.

Never really saw him involved after the incident when he got the yellow card

Mario didn't seem to make a lot of runs but there wasn't much service for him.

Prandelli stuck to his game plan even after it was ineffective in the first hour. His substitutions were pretty much like for like and had very little impact on the game. Immobile stayed immobile on the bench.

Rich Coast basically just won the group didn't they? What is the tie breaker order?
If they lose to England and there's a winner of the Uruguay/Italy game, then it will be goal differential.
That's what I thought, but someone else told me head to head if it is just a 2 team tie.
That person is wrong.

ETA: If Goal differential and goals scored are tied, then it would be head-to-head.

Here are the exact rules

Teams are ranked on the following criteria:

1. Greater number of points in all group matches

2. Goal difference in all group matches

3. Greater number of goals scored in all group matches

4. Greatest number of points in matches between tied teams

5. Goal difference in matches between tied teams

6. Greatest number of goals scored in matches between tied teams

7. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee

Not just you. He looked like Jozy or Dempsey walking around out there.

Of the 6 games CONCACAF has played, they have faced Ghana, Italy, Brazil, France and Uruguay. Only Cameroon was a team that might have been weaker.

This was impossible to predict but it won't stop some fans from trotting out the "Concacrap" line all the time.

Continue to be impressed with the seeming homefield advantage for South American/Western Hemisphere teams - Ecaudor is the only one to lose, other than Honduras which really had no chance vs. France, and Uruguay which lost to Central America's Costa Rica.

I will really be a believer if Costa Rica beats Italy.
OK, I'm a believer. Wish I'd bet on it.

Goal differential reigns supreme then goals scored.

Italy can place first if they

1) win and Rich Coast lose and the combined margin is 4 goals or more

2) win and Rich Coast lose and the combined margin is exactly 3 goals and Italy scores 3 or more goals more than Rich Coast does.

Uruguay can place first if they

1) win and Rich Coast lose and the combined margin is 5 goals or more

2) win and Rich Coast lose and the combined margin is exactly 4 goals and Uruguay scores 2 or more goals more than Rich Coast does.

So... who all has played in Manaus, and what are their odds of advancing?

England: out

Italy: need to win

Cameroon: Short end of the stick in Group A

Croatia: Has to win last game.

USA v Portugal: June 22nd - uh-oh

Honduras v. Switzerland: June 25th (last game of stage)

I am wondering if there is an Amazonian hangover that is going to hurt Croatia, USA, and Portgual in their final games similar to how England and Italy played so poorly after playing in Manaus?

Well, both games in Manaus have had winners so far... if the good guys win the next one, they will not have to worry about the hangover part of the equation as their 3rd game would likely be irrelevant at that point ;)

Pretty surprising that the Swiss are known for the defense - I expect it to have holes.

One things are sure, the best way to beat France is to swing around their line on the free kicks.

Now that is much better!

Costa Rica is +3 right now. Italy even. Uruguay -1

Winner of this group plays Ivory/Japan/Greece them the winner of Mexico-Netherlands/Chile.

We could be looking at concacaf knockout game.

LOL at the French dude lying on the ground for like a minute and then just pops up once he realized the ref was letting it play on.
