2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (4 Viewers)

Horan needs to come off. At the very least, she needs to be taken off the ball. Have someone else show for the ball from the midfield.

ETA: watching slow, lumbering players in 2024 makes me irrationally upset.
Or if you’re going to keep her out there, send it at her head on the corners instead of screwing around with the short corner stuff.

I just found myself cheering on Japan.

This is awful stuff by the US. I get possession... But it's aimless and slow. And the passes sideways and backwards are weighted and aimed so very poorly.. keeps pushing the players back, back and back instead of in good spots ahead of them to allow at least an opportunity to go forward.

They look lumbering and obvious.

She's taking up valuable space in the MF and seemingly incapable of getting to any balls first. Amazing player, but not today. Yank her

At least turn and make a defender commit to you before you pass back. Right now the mids are passing backwards under zero pressure. Japan is making it hard, but the US is playing into their hands. Have your defenders carry it forward. Play long and win scrappy second balls. Play higher risk passes to players in half spaces (NOT THE ONES SURROUNDED BY THREE DEFENDERS!!!). Find quick 1-2s.

This is terrible.

They're obviously the better side... But it's all so negative and slow. I prefer the mens approach which was much more positive and forward thinking. They look bereft of ideas other than rodman or smith in transition... Which kind of renders all that possession moot

Yeah, the Japanese have held a low block... Buts its far more positive, which is usually weird. Very organized, very comfortable defending, and then very positive as soon as they have the ball in the attacking half, let alone third. Always trying to turn the ball and go forward off the dribble or pass.

That was an absolutely amazing goal. She put that into a tiny window. An inch closer to the keeper (who got a touch) and it's saved and much further outside and it's off the post. Hell of a finish.

Well that was ugly. Hopefully they got that out of their system.

I have a feeling though if Canada beat Germany, the US is going to face another organized low block in the semi's. It won't be until the finals it looks like that they may get a team (Spain?) that won't cede possession to the US, which may actually help open up some space.

Spain is losing 2-0 to Colombia right now.

I was a big fan of COL last time they played at the WC. Their #9 is amazing- and in abig bodied traditional #9 way- showing, winning and dominating that space at the top of the defense. Plus has great foot skills and vision, capable of turning players off the dribble or finding runners.

Rodman and Smith both were really poor with their final touches all game. Well... Almost all game. They each got into food spots, but lacked the quality today... Maybe tired, which isn't a good sign for the next two games

Sidebar from the olympics, I was looking at betting odds for the WC and it looks like Brazil is still the consensus favorite, which is interesting given how poor they've looked. They kept their coach, right? What is everyone expecting to change so drastically such that a team that was barely competitive in Copa (and poor in friendlies as well) is suddenly going to be the best in the world in less than two years?

Not just poor in friendlies and the Copa, they are currently in 6th place in qualifying in South America, which may be as low as they have ever been in history after 6 games played.

But the odds are based on what people are betting on. Any one placing a bet this early is probably betting on name value only and Brazil still carries an enormous cache with casual fans.

CONCACAF U20 FInal will be Sunday at 5ET on FS1 vs Mexico. Mexico is this year's host as well.

Mexico has won this event 13 times to the US's 3. However, the US has won the last three (17, 18, 22) so will be going for a four-peat . The top 4 qualifiy for next year's U20 World Cup so both nations (along with Cuba and Panama) are qualified.
Reminder - This is on now

Mexico has 2 players that are underage on their roster - both 2006s.

The US started 5 from the 2006 class and 1 each from 2007 and 2008. We've also subbed in another 2007. So 8 of the 13 players we have played today are underage. I expect we'll see Habroune, Medina, and Figeueroa at some point as well.

Not sure I love taking Soma off. I'm sure he's gassed as I think he's played every minute in the tournament but he's just so calm on the ball he's exactly what we need right now. Habroune is fun and creative but not the steadying force.

Dunno... Ive flat out loved Habrounes game, especially because of how chill he is on and around the ball.

Three completely different chances to simply dribble the ball for a couple of seconds and send a teammate on a clear break away and instead they just kick it to the keeper. WTF were they thinking? They were not even under any pressure.

No chatter for the US game today? Felt like this was the US of old- beating teams wth athleticism, desire and grit, as well as some nice skills.

And the GK kick save to preserve the win was an all-timer.

Nobody watching as France and Spain are 3-3 going into Extra Time in the Gold Medal match?

As Spain hits the post and France nearly scores during the 9 added minutes.
