2020 (now 2021) Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Closing ceremonies 8/8 | USA finishes with most gold, silver, bronze AND overall medals (1 Viewer)

I’m probably just old and jaded so ignore me.  I don’t want to rain on the gold medal and I’m definitely happy we won - thought KD was fantastic.  It just seems like when our best guys go and show up ready to go we still are head and shoulders ahead of the other teams.  Those 6 guys would have won Gold or Silver if they were a separate group.
You’re not wrong but the gap is definitely getting closer. This tournament was the strongest ever, and looking back the USA could have easily lost to Spain in ‘08 and 2012, and we had pretty much everybody then, especially ‘08. Those gold medal games were legit close games that could have gone either way.

I don’t think Australia is going anywhere, they should continue to produce lots of talent, and Europe will always have three or four solid teams. Canada is close to having enough depth to really be a problem too. I really enjoy watching the FIBA game so I hope the other countries continue to get better.

When is the women’s volleyball final?

ETA - found it - looks like it starts in 30 minutes.  And 24 hours more - I’m a moron

Man, as a former volleyball player, this Brazil- Argentina men’s match is just blowing me away. I can’t fathom how good these guys are - some of the best volleyball I’ve ever seen.

I just caught the end of the Women's Marathon.  Fantastic job by Molly Seidel.

Speaking of performances, the female announcer just got worst of the Olympics, for me.  Who in the hell was that, non-stop slobbering over the mic?  So hyperactive, I felt like I was watching a bad horror flick.  More anxiety, more!!

I’ve found most announcers to be really poor

I mean, how difficult is it to learn how to pass a baton correctly???  You've got to be kidding me, this is the Olympics, no?

Watched the U.S. screw it up the other night as well.

⚾️ WHY is team USofA +625 vs Japan? ⚾

didn't we invent this ####?

what kinda roster are we sportin'?  Triple A level? college kids? u14 traveling all-stars? the lower Indiana CYO dream team?

Allyson Felix & Shelley-Ann Fraser - combined age, 102 - both win medals in these games. I thought Felix was cooked down the stretch of the relay, but she got it done. They're both immortals and it wouldn't surprise me to see them at the 2032 Games, medaling again.

The men's 4x100 was crazy. When the hell did Italy get good in sprints? I would love to see their splits. I know they had the 100m champ running an earlier leg, but I thought that dude running anchor was going to take flight.

I was glad to see the USA men win in hoops. They take a lot of crap if they lose a game but, as someone said above, many countries have caught up and I think that's a good thing. As much fun as the Dream Team was, beating Sierra Leone 160-30 wasn't a great basketball viewing experience. Plus, the world's changed now - a lot of the Dream Team's popularity was leftover Cold War baggage.

I will miss the games a lot though. I really like this stuff.
I like to pick an event and just binge every bit of the action, qualifiers and all. Last Winter Olympics I was hooked on the biathlon. I think I will go back and watch the throwing events in their entirety this year.

Yeah - not sure if it’s Covid related (not going out, WFH, etc.) or what but I watched a lot more of the games this year than usual.

Man - this summer has been fantastic for sports watching - Euros, NBA playoffs, Gold Cup, COPA, Olympics.

Yea it’s been great. They should do this every summer lol.

Now bring me the NFL.

Idk. I got sucked in early but got worn down by the constant commercials and bailed about at biles o clock, and then the spoilers started.  They toned down the human interest a ton which was so nice though. Probably covid reasons but that was the most noticeable difference.   I imagine that comes roaring back.

The app had very limited commercials and foreign announcers who knew the sports we don’t know. App was truly glorious, I doubt I watched 50 total minutes of NBC’s prime time coverage.

The NBC app sucks in many ways, but I do appreciate the ability to watch an entire event that I want to watch whenever I want to watch it.  In prior years, its been almost impossible for example to watch the entire shot put or high jump, including all attempts by all competitors. No chance we could ever watch a men's handball gold medal match between Spain and Denmark, a fantastic game, in any year prior to this. With the NBC app, we can do that, and we can fast forward or back as much as needed to see everything we want to see.  Being able to watch the entire 10k open water swim or 50k walk is something I don't think we've ever had before.  I remember when I was in Europe watching an entire downhill skiing event, one competitor after another over several hours and thinking this is something that no US network would ever show.  That was back in the 80s and its been true ever since.  They have always bounced around and just shown a highlight here or the one or two throws or attempts that won medals from events that take place over 3-4 hours.  This is undoubtedly an upgrade for me.  I've watched a ton of Olympics this past couple weeks and had to suffer through exactly zero human interest stories, background stories, interviews or sports I don't like.

I don’t do a lot of social media so didn't really have anything spoiled and YouTubeTV was great with allowing recordings of events you were interested in.  Watched most everything on delay of the delay.

Aw, they disqualified the guy.  :(

ETA:  I mean the guy who delivered the kick.  He thought he won the gold and then they disqualified him.  Heartbreaking.

ETA2:  Would have been Eygpt's first-ever gold medal.  And other guy is in the hospital but doing OK.

Contact with the head used to be points in Karate and I believe it still is. Why was he DQ’d? I also did not see the match.

ETA: it was called as a high kick to the neck and an unchecked attack. It looks like the call was made that the attack took place outside of the referee’s call for action. Either before the call to attack or after the call to halt. Otherwise it should have been a legal attack.

I don't get all of that... the Iranian ducked into the kick.

It must feel weird to accept gold after being so thoroughly beat in a match.

Yeah, that's part of what gets me, too - he was getting killed in the match even before that kick.  I can't say I know the rules so am just going on feel from having watched it, and he didn't seem like a deserving winner.
