my guess is lemoore, ca for surfing. They can run it without having to worry if there will be surf or not at the kelly slater surf ranch.
I had to drive by that place a few years ago for work. It was all walled off and couldn’t see anything inside.

Wife and I were discussing if we would like to go in 2028, would be great, but it's going to be insanely expensive. Was reading that 2nd hand tickets on the official resale site for stuff like the big medal finals like basketball, gymnastics, etc. were over $1K a piece for France. $2K for opening and closing ceremonies. If sticking to the qualifiers its not too costly but when you put in for the ticket lottery no telling what you'll get. Going to be likely twice those prices in LA plus 4 years of inflation, going to be like Superbowl on steroids levels of celebrities and rich folks from all over the world I am sure.

Imagine how expensive (and difficult to get) lodging in a good location will be. Imagine how horrendous traffic will be... I wonder what they're going to do about that. Imagine the level of security everywhere. Cannot imagine the volume and level of details that go into the logistics for something like this.
I have zero....zero desire to be in L.A for this. It will be an absolute ****show.....my couch is perfect.

The only way I am there is if my son makes Team Israel Baseball and plays in the Olympics in 2028 if Baseball returns for those games.
I remember back in 1999 when the Ryder Cup was about an hour from me. I knew someone that lived in Brookline, MA walking distance to the country club. I forget how much he rented his house for the week, but it was some crazy number . . . like $75K (and that was 25 years ago). That's not the best part. The guy that rented it was none other than Michael Jordan. He didn't know that beforehand, and he just about fainted when he opened the door to hand over the keys on his way out the door.

The thing that I didn't expect to interest me at all which ended up drawing me in the most was table tennis. Those matches were fun to watch. Anyone know why they all serve the way they do? Is it a best practice thing, or is it required to serve that way?

According to Wikipedia:

Corkspin

Players employ this type of spin almost exclusively when serving, but at the professional level, it is also used from time to time in the lob. Unlike any of the techniques mentioned above, corkspin (or "drill-spin") has the axis of spin relatively parallel to the ball's trajectory, so that the Magnus effect has little or no effect on the trajectory of a cork-spun ball: upon bouncing, the ball will dart right or left (according to the direction of the spin), severely complicating the return. In theory, this type of spin produces the most obnoxious effects, but it is less strategically practical than sidespin or backspin, because of the limitations that it imposes upon the opponent during their return. Aside from the initial direction change when bouncing, unless it goes out of reach, the opponent can counter with either topspin or backspin. A backspin stroke is similar in the fact that the corkspin stroke has a lower maximum velocity, simply due to the contact angle of the racket when producing the stroke. To impart a spin on the ball which is parallel to its trajectory, the racket must be swung more or less perpendicular to the trajectory of the ball, greatly limiting the forward momentum that the racket transfers to the ball. Corkspin is almost always mixed with another variety of spin since alone, it is not only less effective but also harder to produce.
That stuff is nuts.

I was told there would be no physics on this test. :hot:

As long as there's no break dancing, I'm good.

Later in the day Sunday, USA Gymnastics put out a statement saying that it had submitted a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport that they say shows that the inquiry submitted on Chiles behalf came within the 1-minute deadline.

However, on Monday USA Gymnastics out another statement saying: "USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented. We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan."

This is BS. One article I read stated that the footage showing that the inquiry was timely was not available to the U.S. team at the time of the arbitration.

FWIW, I'm not sure what's going to be classified as a "good location" given how spread out the events are (Link). Like I said above, for anyone coming, I'd either concentrate most of my time in the Long Beach/Carson/Westside (I'm including the Coliseum/Inuit Dome here) area and then supplement it with excursions into Downtown or stay north in the Valley and concentrate on UCLA/Valley Sports Park/Riveria/Santa Monica. There is really no reason to stay downtown short of it being the hub since the only big name activity there is gymnastics at Crypto. You can fly into LAX, LGB, or John Wayne and stay anywhere from Anaheim (can take the train to Union Station, plus Volleyball may end up there) on up through LAX/El Segundo (basically the 405 corridor) if you are doing the Westside/Long Beach circuit or fly into Burbank if you are doing the Valley. They have set this up relatively nicely to get around and besides for track, basketball, and gymnastics I think tickets while expensive won't be impossible (for instance swimming is at Sofi and there will be 38K seats). The one big caveat is that I think you will still need a car to get to the public transport hubs in the first place.

My list of events will be something like soccer somewhere (easy ticket), water polo, handball (both water polo and handball in Atlanta had fantastic crowds and both should be relatively easier tickets) in Long Beach, rowing, and track cycling. I also would like to see volleyball, but those will be tough tickets given in California. But frankly, if its anything like Atlanta any of the events are fun.

Just as an aside to this. The two weeks during the 1984 Olympics were the lightest two weeks of traffic I saw in my 65 years of living and 45 years of working in LA (other than during the Pandemic obviously). Even travelling to the events that I attended (USC and Rancho Dominguez) the traffic wasn't too bad. The city of LA put restrictions on truck traffic in the city during the day. That makes a huge difference. I don't think most people realize how much of the traffic in big cities is caused by trucks. Also, due to the dire predictions of traffic gridlock, I think a lot of people decided to take Vacations over those two weeks. It turned out to be great for commuters though.

I remember the same. We were all preparing ourselves for the most awful traffic of our lives (which is a pretty depressing concept in Los Angeles), and instead it was like there were half as many cars as usual out there.

I wonder what impact ride shares (Uber, Lyft) will have this time.

I also had wondered why there was no squash so fairly interest in seeing that

Do we know where the surfing will be? Tahiti looked awesome.
I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Huntington Beach.

I’ve read online that Huntington and Trestles are the two favorites but no one knows for sure yet.

Apparently two events will be held in Oklahoma City?!?!? Softball and the canoe slalom as LA doesn’t want to build venues to host those events. But they would really need to build a venue for softball?
God, I hope not. OKC in July will be brutal. If they are going to do that, they might as well pick Houston. We have a stadium with AC.

Do I have this right? First the judge(s) got the score wrong. Then they were incorrect in saying the appeal wasn't in time. And now we find out the ruling body contacted the wrong people? They should just stop already and if nothing else give out 2 bronze medals.

Is there some harm here with two bronze?
No, but that's not the issue.

The International Gymnastics Federation, or FIG for short, is in charge of scoring the competition. The IOC is in charge of handing out medals. The CAS, or Court of Arbitration for Sport, is the organization that ruled that the FIG violated their own bylaws by changing Chiles score as the inquiry had been lodged too late.

The IOC claims to have nothing to do with the scoring, they just hand out medals. As of right now, there is no tie for bronze, therefore there is only one medal. Their stance will probably never change on this.

The FIG accepted the CAS's ruling and reverted the score back to what it was before the inquiry. Thus, their official results show the Romanian in 3rd and Chiles in 5th. Because of this the IOC has ruled that Chiles needs to return her medal and they'll(the IOC) have a special ceremony to award the bronze to the Romanian gymnast.

The CAS is the organization that made the ruling because of a protest by the Romanian coaches. They claim the US was notified and had time to respond but didn't. The US says they didn't have the video evidence of Chiles' coach making the inquiry in time when they were asked to respond by the CAS.

So, the CAS says their case is closed and can't be reopened despite new evidence that directly contradicts their finding(which is stupid). The FIG says they have to accept the CAS ruling despite evidence to the contrary(which is stupid). The IOC says they have to stick with the official results despite everyone in the world now knowing those results are wrong(which is stupid).

The USOC is now stuck with having to take the CAS to court.... yes. they have to take a court of arbitration to a higher court of arbitration in order to try and get this fixed. It's a clusterF of the highest order and it shows how stupid all these organizations really are. Plus, it helps remind me why I hate judged competitions so much.

The CAS claimed Landi’s appeal for Chiles’ score came 1 minute, four seconds after the conclusion of her routine. For reference, coaches have a one-minute window to legally appeal the judges’ score of a routine.

Sucks for everyone.

Chiles said she is removing herself from social media to protect her mental health.

She's not as petty as i am. Would totally be like "You want it back now? Come on over and try to take it from me. Bet."

Also the Downtown convention center will be hosting judo, Taikwondo, wrestling, fencing and table tennis. (Note also that weightlifting will be downtown and badminton will be on the USC campus). So downtown by Crypto will be convenient for a bunch of events (we usually stay there when going to USC games at the Coliseum).

There's a pro soccer stadium right there too (I don't know what they're calling it now). I figure they may hold some preliminary matches there, probably have the semis and finsls at the Rose Bowl.

Downtown is also the main hub for our limited light rail and bus system if you want to travel that way to places on the routes. It's looking like they'll finally complete the LAX line in time for the Olympics too, so you could get from lax/sofi to downtown that way.

Decent amount to do downtown now as well, I imagine lots of the condos and apartments will be rentable during the olympics. Not a bad place to stay.

Yeah, that’s BMO where LAFC plays. I haven’t seen it formally listed yet as an Olympics venue. I believe that they are using the LA Galaxy stadium for something.

They are definitely in OKC. The softball is a little confusing. Just play in dodgers stadium for gods sake. The canoe slalom seems like a pretty specialized thing though

Maybe this is fake too, but apparently her husband was one of the judges in the competition to determine who would go to the Olympics. Seems like Australia really had no idea how to manage anything related to the breaking qualification process

Experienced the same exact thing in Atlanta in ‘96. Armageddon was predicted and traffic was fantastic for 3 weeks. Scared everybody to stay home or go on vacation.

Forget Tyson/Paul, this would be huge if they could make this happen.

What distance? In a 100 meter dash it wouldn;t even be close
I'm not even sure Hill is the fastest player in the NFL, and he's surely not fast enough to make the 100M finals on the world stage. But it would be a spectacle...

What if they raced 100 meters, from opposing ends of the track?

If you could be present at Los Angeles 2028, which events would you try to attend?
Do we know where the surfing will be? Tahiti looked awesome.
I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Huntington Beach.

I’ve read online that Huntington and Trestles are the two favorites but no one knows for sure yet.

Apparently two events will be held in Oklahoma City?!?!? Softball and the canoe slalom as LA doesn’t want to build venues to host those events. But they would really need to build a venue for softball?
God, I hope not. OKC in July will be brutal. If they are going to do that, they might as well pick Houston. We have a stadium with AC.
They are definitely in OKC. The softball is a little confusing. Just play in dodgers stadium for gods sake. The canoe slalom seems like a pretty specialized thing though
They still have to figure out what they are doing with baseball (which is holding up some things). There's some rumblings that MLB is down with the season stopping around the All-Star break and it turning into a World Baseball Classic like tournament in size; in which case you are going to need Dodgers, Angels, and probably Petco to support it. If it's major leaguers, everyone of those games would be sellouts.
