***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (2 Viewers)

If you could be present at Los Angeles 2028, which events would you try to attend?
We were planning to be at this one but uhhhhh we had a kid so we are locking in for 2028. My wife wants to see gymnastics and the kayak racing. I want to see one hoops game and track at the coliseum. Swimming would be awesome too. I read soccer may be at the rose bowl so I’d have to see that as well.

Did the U.S. really win some kind of tiebreaker on the gold medals? If so, why?

I don't know that there's any official national competition there. I mean there's no trophy for most gold medals. Just something that people track and are interested in I think.

I'm torn on what I'd try to see. Not sure I would stay two weeks anyway so that might impact things. Feels like track and field would be a lot of bang for the buck of a lot of events in one place.

Swimming the same though.

Would enjoy seeing some indoor volleyball too.

The handful of planted people around Venus in LA is cracking me up. Interesting shift from the elegance and class on Paris to the Chili Peppers on the beach

Wife and I were discussing if we would like to go in 2028, would be great, but it's going to be insanely expensive. Was reading that 2nd hand tickets on the official resale site for stuff like the big medal finals like basketball, gymnastics, etc. were over $1K a piece for France. $2K for opening and closing ceremonies. If sticking to the qualifiers its not too costly but when you put in for the ticket lottery no telling what you'll get. Going to be likely twice those prices in LA plus 4 years of inflation, going to be like Superbowl on steroids levels of celebrities and rich folks from all over the world I am sure.

Keep in mind they still have to select some venues (beach volleyball is a big one), but they have sort of grouped the stuff between Long Beach, Carson, and Downtown LA. Something like swimming is in SOFI (I Guess they are building a pool), so it might not be that hard to get a ticket. Granted I’m in SD, but I’m planning on picking one or two big events and then tooling around Long Beach as much as possible.

And for those that want equestrian, that’s out in Temecula and not close to LA (probably a 2 hour drive).

Also with the buses, it’ll be hard to do more than 1 or two events a day. I’d also look at staying in Orange County or North County SD (Oceanside/Carlsbad) especially if you want access to Long Beach or Carson.

Imagine how expensive (and difficult to get) lodging in a good location will be. Imagine how horrendous traffic will be... I wonder what they're going to do about that. Imagine the level of security everywhere. Cannot imagine the volume and level of details that go into the logistics for something like this.

H.E.R. Star Spangled Banner - f yeah.
This has been an extremely enjoyable Olympics to watch.
I agree, but why? Ability to see so many events via streaming? European start times during the day? Good US performance? I was trying to think why I liked 2024 so much more than prior years and I'm not really sure.

As with others, the start times were a big factor in my enjoyment. It was great to watch the big events during the day as they happened and not have to wait for the compressed primetime coverage. Also, if I missed something, being able to catch up and watch it online was a good option to have. I also liked that the organizers tried to create amazing backdrops for the competition, such as having beach volleyball in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower or the equestrian competition at Versailles.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed the different stories and performances from US track & field team as well as the men's basketball competition.

Peacock was good. 120s timeouts not ideal but felt like caught a lot of interesting moments in very fringe sports. Could often get the last full hour of events completely free of commercials.

@Terminalxylem you catch all the sport climbing stuff? man that was incredible to watch
Yeah, don’t know anything about the guy who won, but kinda glad it was someone other than the favorites going into the comp.

Interesting how Adam Ondra, who is nearly universally considered the GOAT of outdoor climbing, couldn’t top a single boulder problem. Contemporary gym stuff is so much more dynamic/gymnastic than anything you encounter on actual rock. Almost makes me think sport climbing and bouldering should be distinct events.

Janja makes that argument less compelling, of course. And overall, women’s bouldering was the best climbing discipline imo.

Traveling since Friday - what should I try to catch up on? Planning on the closing ceremonies and omnium cycling (cuz that's just bonkers).

Do we know where the surfing will be? Tahiti looked awesome.
I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Huntington Beach.

I’ve read online that Huntington and Trestles are the two favorites but no one knows for sure yet.

Apparently two events will be held in Oklahoma City?!?!? Softball and the canoe slalom as LA doesn’t want to build venues to host those events. But they would really need to build a venue for softball?

Women's relay races.
Men's 5k.
Both US-France gold medal basketball games were pretty contested.

Edit: Bronze medal men's water polo was a very good game

Happy to see the Womens basketball struggle...hopefully their brass have learned their lesson. Caitlin Clark still shortchanged so the damage has been done.

Not me. I'm happy the USA men and women won gold. Invariably, somebody is going to be upset for....well, reasons....but I just don't get it. The folks cheering on France against the US men because LeBron fake reads books or refusing to cheer on the women because Caitlin didn't make the team. Grow up. Life isn't fair. This is our country. Root for your fellow countrymen and women. And I know this is a bit that you've been proud of for a while and but there are others out there like you who actively rooted against the USA for some of the dumbest reasons imaginable. Just weird.

Caitlin didn't make the team!I hope they lose!

What were the dumb reasons?

Well, the DUMBEST take I saw was from Dave Portnoy who wanted France to 'smack' the USA because Jayson Tatum didn't get many (any?) minutes and went on some goofy rant on Steve Kerr. But that guy is a professional crap-stirrer. But he's got a bunch of dopes who follow him parroting his sentiments.

You had Kevin Durant going at it on Twitter with fans who were bashing the team for almost losing to Serbia and praising the Serbian team.

In here, you had people rooting against the US Men because LeBron fake reads books. Not sure you caught that one. That was certainly a take.

And of course you have Trip here who can't get over the fact that Caitlin Clark was left off the team and wants the FFA to know he was happy that the team struggled to win a gold medal, which is about as dumb as dumb can get, IMO. They won gold. Over the host team. Good.

I think this is probably the best Olympics in the last few decades? Can't remember enjoying so much track and field and other tertiary sports. Some of those races were just incredible. Even the closing ceremonies were pretty cool and those costumes were on point.

My only complaint is the IOC striking every clip and video. It's like they don't want to let us enjoy the star of the Olympics, Raygun, in her full lolcow essence. Still haven't been able to find the entire performance online :kicksrock:

I was on vacation last week, but with the kids sleeping in and the timing of the events, I got to watch a good amount of the games. Highlights of the games for me were:

- Mens B-Ball gold medal game and the last 3 minutes
- K Faulkner winning women's cycling event (road event)
- Cole Hocker's 1500 m
- Women's indoor Volleyball team beating Brazil in semi-final. Bummer they didn't win gold, but that Brazil match was pretty epic.
- Women's 4 x 400 final. Just a thing of beauty.

I had it on at work the last two weeks and miss it already. Good list. To add a few more:

- 1500 m swim - Bobby Finke represented the US Men's final chance at an individual gold in these Olympics and responded with a world record. He was not the favorite at all, so it was really cool.
- Katie Ledecky. Just, wow.
- Quincy Hall coming from behind with a face of fury to capture the men's 400 m race. The grimace was grand.
- Noah Lyles winning the 100 m by the slimmest margin imaginable.
- USA Women's soccer regaining their magic and winning gold in Emma Hayes' 10th game as their HC. She's an incredible leader and the US needed her.

And I think the coolest moment for me and my family was watching the US Men's gymnastic team win bronze with the super nerdy guy in glasses securing it with his specialty on the pommel horse. Stephen Nedoroscik - a hero for all of us!

The good news for Clark is that she got a much needed rest after her insane transition from NCAA final four to WNBA games in the span of a few weeks. From what I've seen on social media, she's having a pretty good time on vacation so hopefully the damage she's suffered isn't permanent. She'll likely get a chance to get acclimated to international basketball prior to LA 2028 at one or both of the upcoming FIBA AmeriCups - '25 and '27 and the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin, plus qualification games, friendlies, etc.

In 1984, you had to mail in a request for tickets. I submitted a request for Gymnastics, Swimming, Platform diving and track cycling. I only got the diving and cycling tickets. The track cycling was interesting. I wouldn't mind see that again. Swimming is the one I really want though. I'm going to try to get multiple days of swimming finals when ticket sales open online.

I trying to figure out how much I can profit from renting out our house in 2028 and get out of L.A. for a few weeks...
Goes without saying but vetting the renter is probably more important than the price. I've heard stories of the damage some porn shoots have left behind.

I have zero....zero desire to be in L.A for this. It will be an absolute ****show.....my couch is perfect.

Some people love this.

The only way I am there is if my son makes Team Israel Baseball and plays in the Olympics in 2028 if Baseball returns for those games.
