2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (2 Viewers)

Could they show a freaking replay?
What was the call? Handball? I didn't see the US guy even make contact, and the 2 Moroccan players collided.
Hariel kicked the Moroccon player, who did not touch ball, from underneath. It was not much though.

It’s tough to see, but I think he catches the back of his calf
It was one of those calls VAR won't over turn in either way it was called.

No matter though. Weak pk or not, Morocco is by far the better team and deserves the lead.

The choice to start McGlynn indicates Metrovic expected the US to be on the ball more. He might have to make a change at halftime to put in a defensive player for McGlynn and hope to keep this close and maybe nip one on a set piece.

Morocco looked really good vs Arg... The only game of theirs I saw.

US will need to earn a result vs that team.

Morocco dancing on the ball while the US are stumbling with it. Worst game on the ball I've seen for the US here... But credit to Morocco for how they're pressing higher, causing the US to struggle. Also fantastic shape, particularly through the MF not allowing the balls in to Tessman or Jack, and also shutting the width down as well. Harriman having a hard time with that guy out wide, and a sloppy PK to give up imo.

Well that is the game. Morocco is just a level above us.

yeah and it is not even close. That semi final WC appearance does not appear to be anything close to a fluke for the program.

Of course it is does not help that they rostered their Pulisic level over age player either.

Feels extremely similar to WC2022 for the US. Play well in the group stage, advance and then lose to a clearly better team in first knock out stage.

And like the WC it is kind of hard to feel angry or happy. It just kind of feels they did about what was hoped and nothing more. This is not a fun place to be as a fan because you don't see improvement and you don't see the need to burn everything down.

I think my expectations were nada, so I was actually happy to see a couple things..
- tidy and positive/agressive on the ball.. looking to turn and find the space or runner quickly forward or wide.
- no fear. Went toe to toe with everybody winning or losing, and tried to impose themselves.
- good shape through the 3 lines without being negative and bunkered.

But I'm much less of a results driven guy, so ymmv.

today was the first game I felt they were clearly over matched. I did not feel that way against France even with the bad scoreline.

lol my friend just texted me and said why can’t we be better at soccer?? Morocco is like the size of Florida!!!!!!???

I said idk it’s annoying isn’t it and I will definitely just leave it there lol. :)

to be fair, it's not just Hakimi. We didn't take even close to our best U23 side. Would Pulisic help? Sure. But it's game changing to just bring the guys that were age eligible - Reyna, Pepi, Musah, Johnny, Tillman, Lund, and Scally from the senior side and the guys that couldn't get released (Morris, Reynolds, Pukstas).

I think we had some talent on this roster - and I have no idea Morocco's release issues - but it's not exactly like we sent our best side before even accounting for the over age guys.

In the U20 semis, USYNT up 1-0 at the half vs Panama on a great play by Tsakiris to set up a very nice finish from Vasquez. Honestly against the run of play though. Panama just looks better than we do.

Nico has had a great tournament. I don't often hear his name talked about in transfer rumors so I assume there is something in his game that may not translate.

Like others have said, Morocco is a really good side but I have no sense of whether they brought their best of age players or not. We didn’t and we definitely didn’t send our best older players.

I’m not trying to suggest we are better or even on par with Morocco but rather, this match isn’t going to give us much of an answer to that.

Yeah but how different would it have been if Penny Hardaway and Shaq were out there on the pitch instead of wasting their talent on the court.

He really hasn't been impactful in MLS. Two years ago I thought he was going to explode, but like Cowell at San Jose, he has 1k minutes so far this year for San Jose without a goal or assist.

San Jose has a ton of talent in their youth system but they haven't proven to be a franchise that can develop it. And this really worries me with KK Spivey (a 2009 elite level midfielder). He's so good I think he'll get snapped up early but he has no Euro passport so he has to stay with San Jose til he's 18, which is in 3 full years.

San Jose and DCU just are dead to me.

Panama scores a pk but Raines with a wondergoal in the 85' minute to make it 2-1 and the US advance to the final.

The US was a lot better in the 2h, especially after we switched back to a 433 (we started in a 442). Raines/Soma are both too safe but we definitely began controlling the midfield better once we switched to 3 in the middle when Raines subbed on.

We have talked about it before but there is an interesting anti correlation between population size and soccer quality.

4 of the 5 most populated countries are:

India, China, Indonesia, and Pakistan

They are FIFA ranked:

India: 124
China: 87
Indonesia: 133
Pakistan: 197

Morocco is good. Bummer to see us go out in a whimper like this but they're the clear better team.

As are 25 other countries. I've beaten this dead horse a 100 times ... US Mens Soccer is as terrible as it ever was.

We should root for a better team, like Antarctica. At some point it's not even worth throwing a nickel at.

Dude, did somebody kick your dog today? You’re super pessimistic about everything.

It’s what he does. I ignore it.

CONCACAF U20 FInal will be Sunday at 5ET on FS1 vs Mexico. Mexico is this year's host as well.

Mexico has won this event 13 times to the US's 3. However, the US has won the last three (17, 18, 22) so will be going for a four-peat . The top 4 qualifiy for next year's U20 World Cup so both nations (along with Cuba and Panama) are qualified.

USWNT in the first half... slow, too safe, terrible final balls the few times they've worked through the Japanese bus. And despite all the control Japan had, by far, the best two chances.

Lindsey Horan in particular has been awful -- lumbering and terrible on the ball with back pass after back pass where there was a (higher-risk, it's true) first touch pass available to go forward.

My advanced level tactics for 2nd half would be "give it to Rose". Everything good has gone through her.

I wonder if a couple available guys like Luna (spacing on the other 1 or 2 headscratchers that would've been available) would've made a difference at the Olympics? I don't think so... Morocco was that much better. But still wouldve been good to brig those guys into the fold.

I don't think Luna would have made a difference even if I think Luna should have been on the team.

The only thing that may have made a difference was if the best age eligible players were available to play.

Reyna, Musah, Pepi and Scally specifically would have been upgrades over Mihailovic, McGlynn, Duncan, and Hariel respectively.

And even if all 4 were available, I think the game would only be closer, not that we could beat Morocco. Personally I think Morocco was absolute dynamite yesterday. You rarely see a team at any level that combines that much technical skill with that much flair. It was very impressive.

Horan needs to come off. At the very least, she needs to be taken off the ball. Have someone else show for the ball from the midfield.

ETA: watching slow, lumbering players in 2024 makes me irrationally upset.
