2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (3 Viewers)

Looks like Morocco is next up on Friday in the QFs. They won their group by beating Argentina and Iran, lost to Ukraine.

Not only was advancing out of the group unexpected, they drew a team they should have a 50-50 chance of beating.

I noticed one of their overage players is Hakimi, who I believe is a regular starter for PSG. He used to play for Real Madrid. He's the guy who made a paneka in the penalty shoot to knock Spain out of the world cup in Qatar.

he will be the best player on the pitch by a large margin. He is a terror when attacking. Luckily the US fullbacks in this system almost always stay at home.

It’s funny because Tessman has never quite looked ready for the full senior team to me, but he’s also clearly a cut above this, the very top youth level.
I haven't watched him play much, but that doesn't seem like a very generous assessment. By all accounts, he was a standout on a team that just got promoted back into the top level of play in Italy. Unless we're judging him purely based on something like two games with the USMNT senior team, that seems like the most relevant sample of play...and better than any 'youth level', even if well below the top levels of play.
He’s gotten a few chances. He’s kind of like Johnny in that he has the resume to suggest we needn’t be so reliant on Adams. But the USMNT under Berhalter never really found a guy who could push Adams at the 6. Tessman and Johnny included.

So maybe it’s coaching. Hard to tell. But Tessman does pop at this level. I thought he did even against France.

Canada could very well beat Columbia and advance despite the -6 points sanction and be a 3-0 team treated like a team that barely squeaked through to round 2. If that happens, it's tough/competitively questionable for whoever has to play them in round 2, right...?

Canada would almost certainly get the 2nd place group B team if they win vs Colombia. They actually can even win the group.

Sorry I flaked out on scenarios for the Olympics :bag:

There was a PK save?
Yes. 5 minutes left in the game. Berchimas for US had a terrible late tackle in box to give up the pk. PK was hit hard but not well placed and keeper got down and deflected it with one hand.
US through to the semis of concacaf? Do I have that right (along with auto-qualifying for the WC)?
correct. The qualification was the key thing. Now it is just gravy from here.

+1 He stood out in that game IMO. Just consistently available, pushed or body-shaped the ball into space with his first touch, got in the way a lot -- against a very good team.
players who the new coach will have to take a look at are:

1) Tessman. With Adams constantly hurt, this is could be a huge year for Tessman in Serie A.

2) The smurfs out wide. All of Aaronson, Booth, Paredes, and Yow can push the elder Aaronson and maybe even Weah

3) Zimm: Need to consider whether a recall is in order. While CCV, Miles and McKenzie may all be younger than Zimm, I am not convinced they are better. The interesting thing is that neither Zimm nor Miles are considered even above average distributors out of the back but the US has had no issues building from the back. Sometimes a safe pass into the midfield is enough

4) It won't be the new coach but some one, any one(!!), has to grab McGlynn by the throat and make him realize that if he can turn himself into even an average defender in the midfield, the sky is the limit. The kid strikes a ball: shooting, short passing, mid range and long passing, arguably better than other American at any age level alive. And having a skillful, ball striking left footed player is greatly missed in the senior team (all due respect to Jedi, this is not his strength)

I don't think the Canada punishments are going to end at the Olympics. Sounds like FIFA is actually digging in

FIFA have revealed emails in the Canada spying scandal.

An email sent by a Canada Soccer performance analyst to Bev Priestman revealed the analyst no longer wanted to spy on other programs.

Another one revealed Priestman contacting HR seeking advice on the situation, detailing the organization's history of spying and implicated the men's team.

This kind of makes it go from "scandalous but funny" to "actually evil" If they tried to put the blame on (and fired) someone who had tried to bring a halt to the spying.

Salty Jesse Marsch attitude might be changing soon....
I think Herdman may get the stick from FIFA..........

He denied ever using them but it seems clear they did. Honduras had a game in Canada during the last qualifying cycle and they had to abandon practice when they saw the drone. Herdman just blamed it on Canada being a big country and that drones are going to be flying over.

I don't think Tyler Adams made any one feel very comfortable yesterday. I think the powers that be hope that no one saw the interview.

Adams was interviewed and was asked about the spying scandal and said something like "I can assure you, every one does it"

He may have no meant it but he basically implicated the teams he has been on, including the USMNT.

Lucky for the USWNT imo. How can it not be interference when she's standing directly in front of goal, right in the middle of the action between Smith, Rodman and the Aussie GK?

I know you're sitting in the first row, ready to get off at the next stop, and scared of the lunatic hanging out in the back -- but I'm still glad there's someone else on this bus with me every now and then.

I've been whining about the nonsense of offside/interference for what seems like forever now. Its really just my schtick as much as anything as I know that goal will probably always be given. Post up next to the GK and as long as you don't touch anything you're "passive".

I love Horan but I think she's past it. I don't know anything about depth for her role but I bet this tournament is the last we'll see of her.

A report earlier this week, citing a source in the program (presumably not Marsch), stated that Marsch turned down the use of the drone stating that it "wasn't part of his coaching philosophy." And whatever I think of Marsch's saltiness, I do believe that he'd probably react that way. I think the guy really does have a (possibly unhealthy) desire to prove himself and his philosophy and wouldn't allow himself "shortcuts." Just my impression.

Canada indeed finished second, over Colombia on goal differential despite being docked 6 points. They play (unlucky) Germany on Saturday.

The US play Japan - a luck of the draw thing as the winners from Groups A and C get third place teams, whereas the winner of Group B get a second place team.

The Japan match up is very tricky. They came in second in the group only to the reigning World Champs and current #1 ranked Spain. And they actually had a lead on Spain in that game.

Forwards stay the same as the Guinea game but McGlynn gets the start today in the midfield, which will move Tessman back to the 6.

Busio did not dress again.

Large Moroccan support expected in the stands today
