2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (2 Viewers)

Somewhat related to Argentina being given 19 minutes of extra time to tie the game up...has there EVER been a game (either club or international) where the horrible call/controversial decision favored the substantially "smaller" team? I mean...it must happen occasionally, but feels like 98% of the time the sketchy ref decision favor the bigger name club or country, making it seem even more like it's actual corruption, not just incompetence.
And since I'm sure someone will point it out for me...the very same game could be argued to have favored Morocco with the weird overturning of the late goal

The explanation lies in a new VAR test that is being implemented in the tournament. This test uses a timer to count time lost due to interruptions in the game, with the aim of ensuring a greater net playing time.
I am speechless.

Only in soccer would you need to experiment with a special, brand new technology, never seen before, gadget like a "timer".

I mean they are basically saying the ref does nothing more than guess for added time.

not quite what you were asking but this always jumps to mind since it was one of the reasons the US did not qualify for WC 2018

"**** Happens in Soccer" 101...
  • The field was flooded before the game and was borderline unplayable (which usually favors the inferior team) and the US hard a terrible time adjusting to the glacial pace of the ball
  • The US scored an own goal you couldn't replicate if you tried 1000x times
  • The T&T player scored the goal of his life from 40 yards
  • Pulisic's tying bid hit the post
  • The phantom goal by Panama
  • And I want to say ANOTHER team scored a relevant goal that helped knocked the US out
People love to stick narrative to things (Arena, the "generation gap", gutless players, etc etc etc), but sometimes **** just happens.

Dempsey, not Pulisic, hit the post after subbing in. Damn, I remember way too much of that game :sadbanana:

As for the other games, not only did the US need to lose, they needed two other things to happen to not qualify.

Panama had to win
Honduras had to win

both Panama and Honduras were losing at half time of that last game.

It was as perfect a storm as one could conjure.

I always think too many people focus on this one game though as the reason the US did not qualify. In reality they needed only 1 point from any of the 6 other games they did not win before this game to qualify and make the T&T game meaningless.

Before the game the oddsmakers had the US at somewhere around a 70% chance of finishing top 3 and a 97% chance of minimum top 4 in the group. That's how crazy and ridiculous that day was.

It is still so depressing most fans can't see how broken allowing the ref to keep his own time is. There is so much room for corruption or incompetence.
As a casual fan, this is my biggest issue (way bigger than the flopping, offsides, etc.). It seems like such an easy fix - just show us the damn time like every other sport!
it does seem like an easy fix until you factor in that probably 3-4 billion people on the planet disagree.
Yeah, well, Nickelback has a strong following, Trump got elected, somehow "Gagnam Style" became a thing...
I want it changed.

I want clear stoppages in the game clock for injuries, goals, subs, free kicks and any time the ball goes out of bounds. I want games to end exactly at 90 minutes. I want extremely explicit laws that prevent any league or federation trying to exploit this for commercial interruption of the games.

This would remove corruption, remove incompetence, and remove time wasting (a huge issue) from the sport. You lose the feeling of not knowing when the game will end (which a lot of soccer fans love)

I am in the vast vast vast vast minority with my opinions on this.
I've been with you on this for years. College game has it right.

US should have won by quite a bit more than 3-0, especially vs 10. Hope that doesn't bite them later.

I think it's cool that Trinity Rodman has carved out her own (deserved) identity instead of just being Denis Rodman's daughter. She could have had 4 or 5 tonight... and looks electric.

Kind of feels like they shouldn't bother with normal soccer in the Olympics. Play indoor, futsal, beach, or 7v7 small field with no offsides or something. It's just hard to care that much about U-23 teams playing for a title that's lesser than WC, Euros, and Copa. Rugby 7s is making Olympic soccer look bad.

... and MLS wimped out after starting this way. It was disappointing.

Think of a casual fan who just turns it on for a big game... like me when watching Olympic handball. The clock is counting up and currently at 40 minutes... how much time is left in the match? Is this high drama when one team is desperate to score or do they still have 50 minutes left? No idea.

The big difference of course is soccer could care less about casual fans. Even for many many decades of not having audiences in China, India or the US they did not care, and just ruled the rest of the known world.

And seeing how massively the sport has grown in the US in just the last twenty years, maybe they were right even if some of us hate the way they keep time.

This is how a game should end...

I am not that knowledgeable about the USWNT but in looking at the roster, some things jump out.

Swanson back and Rose fully healthy should make an enormous difference to the team compared to the WC, as will Rodman and Smith being more seasoned.

I can't speak to how the new coach will effect the team but people with way more knowledge than me think she may be the best coach in the world.

With England not even qualifying, the US could be set up for a very deep run with only 12 teams in the tournament.
I didn't realize Bridget Everett was the USWNT coach. I love her in Somebody Somewhere.

She just goes right around people with the ball on her foot all the time. And her passing is phenomenal.

Futsal would be amazing. All skills and speed. Hell yeah.

I personally find beach soccer idiotic and boring to watch, even if it's fun to play.

From a really well developed set piece if I recall.

Remember those days? When set pieces were a strength?

No, that one was well saved by the keeper (off a nice set piece as you remembered).

The shot that hit the post was a slow dribbler that almost snuck in: https://youtu.be/h2jjxHOLU0U?feature=shared&t=183

I guess I'd also rather see different people who don't really have a shot at full national teams (Preki excluded).

Is Booth coming off an injury where they need to limit his minutes? Because I agree- he's the top of this talent pyramid for the US.

great to see the good play from the France game carrying over. Total dominance so far.

A kudos for the staff for not over reacting to the scoreline from the France game when the scoreline did not reflect the game on the field.

hmm, much less that I expected. I wonder if they are going to investigate all the information that has come out about the mens team as well

If France beats Guinea today, the US is in great shape to advance with a draw in their last game if the US can maintain this lead.

He was injured for part of the Spring. Would have thought he's back to full fitness by now, but it's possible that they're being extra cautious.

I once again note that I could have understood the decision to stop calling Zimmerman in to camps a lot more if CB was a position of strength in the pool. But it’s not. He’s been the US’s best set piece target (or at least tied with Weston) for years. And he was one of those locker room guys. Meanwhile CCV may be fine with Celtic, but he’s always sucked with the national team, so why are we giving him so much credit for handling Partick Thistle?

Probably should have been a much bigger win but the 3 goal win gives them the GD over NZ now.

It would be nice if the transitive property held for once in soccer but I assume the game against Guinea will be a dog fight.

By the way, there is a non zero chance the US could advance with only 3 points as they may hold GD over both Guinea and NZ even with a loss to Guinea (depending on the result later today of course).

That was a dominant first half against a decent team. Exposed all their weaknesses and capitalized. Wish they had closed it out stronger, finished more of those chances and not given up the goal... But can't complain with the win and 4-1. They continued in much the same way they did vs France and put away their chances.

I hope Busio is ok. Thought their shape suffered a bit with Jack McG.

2 for 2 of US teams needing a result and getting them. 1 more for each to progress.

I dont follow the younger guys enough but I liked their play for the most part today. Minus a couple of guys, the ball moved quickly when needed. Chances were created, Finished when needed.

Defensively, still slow to step to the ball in threatening instances. The goal given up late was just an odd stab and look behind - I guess expecting help, which wasn't there.

Still seeing a few guys trying to do too much with the ball when it should've come off the foot quickly.

Agree they shut off on that goal... But outside of a couple rare other times, I actually thought they did a really good job stepping to the ball and shutting things down with numbers in the defensive third. Iirc, that goal was their first shot on target... A credit to the defensive line and MF block.

And they got up those couple goals early. For me, a perfect time to let your attacking players express themselves on the ball. And even more so up 3 and 4 zip. It's not always going to work... Which is fine. If they weren't moving the ball around quickly and finding the pass most of the time and were only hot-rodding it, is agree with you. But today, I disagree.

The big question for the coach is what do you change for the last game. For the first two games the US has gotten very very little out of both Paredes and Duncan offensively while both Yow and Booth have looked good off the bench.

It will be interesting to see if he goes with a small front line for the last game with out a natural striker.

Busio is a much sounder player defensively both tactically and defending the ball when compared to Jack.

But McGlynn can do things offensively that no other player can on the team.

There may be no choice though if Busio is really hurt. Pulling up like he did with no contact on the play is rarely a minor injury.

I am not watching but I saw online that Guinea and France are still tied in the second half. We could really use a French win here to give the US a little more wiggle room in the final game.

France wins 1-0.

That means:

US advances for sure with win in last game
US advances with a strong likelihood with draw
US advances with a medium chance with a loss (would need a low scoring 1 goal loss and for NZ to not beat France)

Another potential problem is Tessmans yellow today. I don't know if that's his first or 2nd, but you don't want him playing carefully vs Guinea and you don't want him missing the next match either.

If the US advance, they will play the winner of Group B.

Group B is as tight a group as I have ever seen after two games:

All 4 teams are level on 3 points.
1 team is on +1 GD, 2 teams are 0 GD, and 1 team is -1 GD
1 team has scored 4 goals, the other 3 teams have scored 3 each

Women’s Olympics. Zambia and Australia are tied, 5-5 in second half.

I wonder if that sets some sort of record for most goals by both teams individually in an Olympic game? 5 goals each I think is very very rare

I felt like the US women were in a rough group... Aussie has been very good for a while now, and Germany has a history of being a powerhouse. When I saw that Germany spanked Aus 3-0, I got worried that they'd ridden the euro wave towards what is likely a new dominance of the sport. Today's match was going to be a real litmus test for the US and where they might stand in the order of things after tumbling out of the last WC so early.

4-1. Phew. On to the knockouts and looking confident.

Anybody watch? I didn't... Curious how dominant the win was.
