***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (4 Viewers)

Played more Ecuador to win at ht. Tore up field has me mildly concerned, but Honduras does not have the class of Ecuador. The chances they've produced have mostly been against the run of play and with long passes, bad touches. Ecuador should control pace again, and second half. Honduras will slow down. Plus, I don't think Honduras will end the match with 11 on the pitch.
Betting on class this world cup has proven costly thus far.

Why have a left footed player take that set piece from that angle? Rather have the ball curling in towards goal, no?
An accurate ball is more important than threatening a low chance shot.
I didn't say shot...seems easier to get a glancing touch on the ball headed near the goal than a direction changing header.
The choice of in-swinger or out-swinger is really not important.
It is imo

One you can barely get a piece of and send it into goal, the other takes solid, less likely contact.

Eta lol

Location and pace are so much more important its hardly worth mentioning.

Study done in 2013 on corners- 61% inswinging v 30% outswinging

Studying this-

In the book Soccer Tactics and Skills, Charles Hughes (1987) argued that the best way to score corner goal consists of 3 factors:

Near post

Inswing

Keep it simple

If I were rooting for Ecuador or if I had a wager on Ecuador but still not knowing much about what i'm watching, Jefferson Montero would NOT be my friend. He seems to be trying to beat multiple opponents by himself while never, ever doing so.

The 2013 study is limited to 178 data points and I've no idea of the validity of the statistics quoted from the book. Beyond which, there is nothing in the study indicating your claim that you should chose an in-swinger due to the great ease of deflecting on goal.

Is there any other sport where they can complain to the refs like this? Watching Honduras swarm the ref at the end of the first half, it's pathetic.

Can someone explain what happened at the 25:58 mark of the Italy- Costa Rico game earlier.
Bump for any of the soccer experts.
 free kick?
Are you asking what led to the free kick, or do you have the time wrong?
It appeared that the ref awarded them the ball but that it wasn't really a free kick. As soon as he approached the ball the opposing player ran within a few yards of him.

Well, two things happened - first there was a foul, but the referee let the play develop before calling the foul - looking to see if Italy had the advantage by playing on.

Then when he decided to call the foul, a defensive player will usually encroach - the kicking team can wait to get their 10 yards, or they can take a quick kick - which is what Pirlo did here.

Ironically, a very similar situation happened later in the game, but Pirlo took the free kick into the player who was encroaching, and the player was given a yellow card, for interfering with the free kick.

Thanks. I don't have it recorded anymore, but as I recall the defending team kicked them the ball for the restart which occurred immediately. It appeared to me that ref may have instructed them to do that much like they do after an injury stoppage. I was wondering if I had missed some type of double foul.

Well, we knew it was bad...

Between Clint Dempsey’s first-minute goal and John Brooks’s late game-winner against Ghana, Klinsmann’s crew lacked structure and execution. Among the tournament’s 32 teams, only Algeria and Iran completed a fewer percentage of passes than the United States (66 percent).

I read an article on a guy Manchester City employs who does studies on this sort of thing. Significantly higher percentage of goals on "in-swinging" corner kicks than out.

Of course, every time I watch them and they take an out-swinger I think "typical city"

Ill see if I can dig up the article.
